If you’ve returned to school mid-career, and you’re thinking it’s harder than you thought, you aren’t alone. The learning curve can be steep when you’ve been out of class for a decade or more. In her talk, writing instructor and coach Candice Neveu, explains that “while most mature students think they need to build more skills to do better in school, the thing they really need to build is their mindset.” Find out how the right mindset will speed up your learning and skill building, boost your confidence, and bring you the academic success you seek. Candice Neveu is a certified Wayfinder life coach, combining her lived experience and extensive training to support her clients in getting the results they want so they can create a career and life they love. After completing her Masters in English to pursue her dream of teaching at post-secondary, Candice Neveu spent over 15 years teaching academic writing, and deepening her training in adult and continuing education, before certifying as a life coach.
One of Candice's core beliefs is that every student, every person, has the capacity to succeed in meaningful, authentic ways, even if they don't quite see it themselves. That's why her mission is to help lifelong learners build the skills and mindset they need to feel confident and be successful when they're pushing their growth edge. She lives in Sooke, BC with her husband and two teenage kids. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I needed this, the timing is perfect. I think these things to myself, but it is really nice hearing someone say it. Not only is our mind our greatest critic, but the people we surround ourselves with. If people don't want to see you succeed, your likelihood of success diminishes.

Thank you for the talk. I am an international graduate student in the USA and I am “behind” in my program. Fifth year still have not fulfilled early requirements and question about leaving program a lot. Went through divorce, pandemic, discrimination in USA medical facility. I am financially supporting my parents from my stipend. I question and think about leaving but after investing four years it seems useless to leave it without degree. This talk was very helpful. It was not vague or asked to know your purpose or “why”. Because to be honest I don’t know my why or PhD doesn’t seem like a direct answer to my why. You made clear distinction between learnable skills vs believes and using words like first, second and third gave listeners exact point they need to take away with them. Thank you! I listened to this while I was questioning/ procrastinating writing my qualifying paper.

Who you are is evolving every day. Take care of yourself by tending to the basics. Sleep, hydration, nutrition, movement, rest, breathing, and gratitude. Keep to these tiny steps, and over time, you will emerge with a tremendous body of wisdom. Your vista is expanding, not just here across the Fabulous landscape, but for who you are in the world.
