I've been working patiently, carefully on my 150 gal Tank, all the details; stones, graveled bottom, water hyacinths, potted lake plants, etc. Jeez, I'd like to live here myself! DIY filtration system, too powerful a pump but valve controls the flow rate. I ordered Shubunkin goldfish because of your love for Shubunkin fish and all the videos you have done on them. Your knowledge and superb commentary was the influence on my decision. Would love to send you a photo on my pond, but you have to know that you have your newest subscriber in southern New Mexico.

I’ve learned that secret too. With my koi, I’ll only feed once a day unless the temperature is low then sometimes I’ll feed 1 every 3-4 days. The goal is to keep them alive and healthy and not to grow them over winter. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks Amos. I agree with you 100% regarding a feeding. I don't feed my koi outside all winter long unless you become very active and I've never seen that yet. They're all so beautiful and fantastic footage, too! Really like that little one that's mostly orange with a black vertical stripe from the tip of the dorsal fin. As you know, I don't have goldfish or koi, but I also only feed my fish once a day with a couple exceptions. Like you, I find it's better for the fish, the health of the tank, and also cuts down on unwanted snails. Great video, Chris! Have an awesome weekend! 🙂👍

I only have three little young shubunkins in my pond with no plans to get more since they're being lovely mosquito-eaters and puppy-dog pet fish this summer, but I do wonder if the much-advertised 40 gallon tank is acceptable as an emergency option should their 140 gallon pond's filter pump or de-icer break down. I have a simply-planted 40 gallon breeder just in my greenhouse (which can get down to 50 F but better than freezing over), and it has just some limited large stone hide areas with tougher plants and small bits of driftwood for just tannins and bacteria. I was hoping to use this tank to keep a couple of mystery snails and doing hydroponics from that if the pond's deicer and pump kept up all winter and the fish winterized well--I don't think mystery snails at a decent size should be at risk from young shubunkins, but I ought to move them to my other tropical tank in that case, yeah? Just mostly hoping my little garden guys will make it and get big and chonky in the following years--and keep eatin' them mosquito larvas. The pond is six feet long in one dimension and three feet in another so it should be lovely for a longer-finner, streamlined goldfish type.
