Minnesotan here! If you fall through ice, you try to calm yourself down from the shock, you rest your arms up on the firmest part of ice, allow your back legs to float up to the surface, then kick your legs like you are swimming so you can push yourself forward to the ice, do not try to pick yourself up, you just gotta drag your way while kicking until your body is almost completely on the ice, then you cautiously get up and make your way to land. Hope this helps! P.s. if you fall through a river then you are probably SOL

Hey I've heard another advice on how to survive a bear attack... Provided you are close to some bigger object like a van or massive tree trunk, just run around it! Bears are much faster but due to their body mass, they don't steer very well so a human can outmanoeuvre them. The bear will supposedly just get annoyed and leave. They're the OG "how to survive" and they are really good, teaching you what to do in dangerous situation from a nuclear attack to a oil fire to falling under the ice to getting lost in the woods - with regards to actual possibilities in that situation, because they were made with a serious consideration. Ran into a black bear once in BC, Canada. The first thing that my friend does is run as fast as she can away from the bear with the bear spray, leaving me alone with it. Honestly, bear was just chilling so I just walked past it. Most of the time they are more afraid of us, except if it's a grizzly bear. Also, pretty sure grizzlies don't eat humans? I think it's more of a territory thing which is why "playing dead" aka seeming as non-threatening as possible, can actually work. Grizzly's are smart, they don't actually think you're dead. But I could be wrong on that.

Not that I've had personal experience, but you're right about Grizzlies, as far as I know. They're opportunistic scavengers, so if they genuinely thought you were dead, they'd just eat you anyway. Curling up in a ball is more about protecting your vitals until you can escape than anything else.

There's a famous true story of a newly married couple honeymooning in Anchorage Alaska, the bride walked onto the fine sand on the beach and sunk in. They tried for well over an hour to get her out, but the water was coming in quick. In desperation, the husband went to the highway and called for help. By the time he got back to her, the water had gone over her head and she had drowned.

@@sh21dow "Unless provoked" is never good advice to go by. You could provoke them by walking in their area, making a noise they don't like, smelling weird, peeing on a tree, making eye contact, breaking eye contact etc. It's just never a good thing to count on
