As someone who has been sewing for years I would actually recommend only working with thread as long as your forearm as anything longer will be likely to knot,twist or catch on the way through. Its easier to rethread than to do the whole job with knotted,twisted thread. Great video though and a brilliant end result. X
@panda51223 жыл бұрын
That's what I came here to say. I learned this way prevents knots from forming.
@kiyosenl.3889 Жыл бұрын
So when you reach the end of the thread you just tie a knot and start with a new piece starting at about the same distance as between your stitches?
@LottelinA Жыл бұрын
Yes. When you come to the end of the thread just fasten off securely, rethread your needle and carry on as before. X

NOTE: wash and dry a new pant before altering. washing can shrink some material so better wash it before to know its shrinkage
@cotteeskid3 жыл бұрын
As someone who regularly adjusts his pants in the length and width, the only caveat I would add to this video is if you use another pair of pants as a template for length in particular, make sure it is a similar type of pants and material. Thicker material like a pair of jeans sits differently at the cuff of the pants than dress pants that is light weight material like in the video. You might like jeans that gather a bit but dress pants that sit straight. Correcting if it is too long is ok, but if you cut, then hem too short, there may be not enough material to correct.

This is a great video. I have my teenager son watch this video because he has pants that fit the waist but not the leg parts. he measures and I sew them with the sewing machine. This teaches him that when he purchases a pair of pants to make sure it fits the waist and hip area and to tailor when he gets home. thanks and keep on teaching people how to love to sewing.
@margaretf61473 жыл бұрын
I suggest investing in a simple sewing machine if you plan on taking in the sides of your pants. They are not that expensive used. Start with a very long stitch first (basting stitch) and check how it falls before going over it with a tighter stitch. It is difficult at best to remove a tiny stitch without destroying the fabric. You will need to trim the extra fabric to 5/8ths of an inch from your new seam. Never to late to learn to sew, I had two brothers that taught themselves to sew BEFORE the internet lol. One made a tuxedo and the other made dress shirts for work. I taught him on a treadle machine as a teenager. Good luck.

I you’re doing it by hand I suggest using a longer needle and while holding the needle with the right wiggle the fabric up and down with the left pushing the fabric into the needle, after few fold of fabric are stocked in the needle just push the needle through by pulling the fabric flat. This technique is used in Japanese sashiko and allows for fast running stitching. It’s hard to explain but there are many tutorials on KZbin

Please don't cut your wool trousers with a regular pairs of scissors. It will unravel and ruin the fabric. Use pinking shears to help minimize the damage and keep the integrity of the cloth.
@Mr-R.R.2 жыл бұрын
the whole point of sewing is to prevent unraveling. It's perfectly fine to cut it with any scissor that's sharp enough. Now, if you're going to leave the cut ends unfinished, pinking them is will be much more needed there.
