Change the word discipline in your head to committed or persistent. For some people discipline might have a negative connotation. Like I need to discipline my kid or my dog and that means something negative, whereas being persistent and committed to a goal is more positive and motivating

Before you do anything, Tip #6 (came from you) is the best starting point on this journey and that is: I like, I like, I like (mentioned 7 times here)... Love what you do. Got to love the process. Got to dig it, got to get a kick out of it. Yours is the best one. Tip #1. Great great tip. Start small, almost like the zen philosophy which I think tells you to start with a small to smaller goals until you find that small goal within your reach and doable. The second most integral component to it is to make that achieved goal converted into a part of your Habit and to do so, you must do it continuously (without a single break and if there's a break, you have to start counting from square one again... nature of the beast) for 23 days/times (minimum... sort of like the law of forming a habit according to science) to 90 days. With 90 uninterrupted repeatation, you can safely say, a solid habit has been formed and you can move on to the next big (broken into smaller project) thing. Third component: Celebrate (tip # 5) your achievement (but only with people who appreciates and values you). Discipline can be fun... wow !!! powerful. That's a new one. Pick #4 is an interesting technology. The positive feeling is created almost like an afterthought. But I think the element of pick #6 "love what you do" must be in the background to make the process more successful. And again, if you love what you do, you'll automatically Persist (pick #2). What an awesome video. Simply wonderful. Thanks Evan. Please keep it up with more great stuff in the future.

The bonus "caring" was spot on. When someone cares enough, one will go above and beyond. Wanting to achieve your goal more then sleep, I will add more then eating, watching a program, hanging out, chatting, ect you will achieve it because you care enough to make it a necessity. If breathing wasn't the bodies necessity then it wouldn't do it, same thing with goals and achieving them. I NEED TO, really NEED to obtain my goals...like I NEED to breathe, eat, sleep, ect. Or I will die... (my mind frame)

"discipline is a result of consistency in our own self image" I tried to start a business, with the inherited belied that I'm bad with money. It was such a struggle to simply sit down and do the little bit of accounting work necessary. I paid the price for that. Staying in shape, on the other hand, has been automatic for me. It's easy for me to work extremely hard when I exercise. It doesn't even feel possible for me to get out of shape- it's just who I am. Both of these beliefs were enforced in me as a child. As I move forward, it's my job to examine my own self image, and to change it. I can choose to examine the voices in my head and whether to listen to them. And I can provide my own voice, quietly and out loud, to encourage me through new actions that aren't actually physically challenging, and prove to myself that I can be who I decide to be.

This is so true, one of the most useful videos ever! Too many people think that because you don't have the fire you once had, you should just quit and move on. However, that is NOT the case. You have to learn to develop self discipline and commitment. Just like in marriage, it starts with love, but that fiery love is going to go through some hard times and it's going to turn into commitment. However, the love will come back after all the hardship. People really need to understand themselves and the underlying root problem for what's their being unmotivated. If they do not get this handled and understood, every career they feel that fiery love for will turn bland and they'll just change and get nothing accomplished in life. Very tricky business, maybe you could do a video on understanding yourself Evan and knowing what the real underlying problems are.

Good vid. One point of contention. Its not hard to be disciplined in stuff you enjoy doing. Discipline is needed for things you don't want to do. I don't need discipline to play guitar because I enjoy doing it. But I don't enjoy cleaning the house so I need discipline to do that.
@EvanCarmichael8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts...that made sense, although sometimes we may end up just doing what we enjoy doing and forget the rest of our responsibilities and we need to have discipline to stop doing it for awhile to do things that are necessary for us to do. #BTA342 Shine

Self Help Dude no one says we need to do what we don't enjoy. I despise dusting the house. Anything you can pay someone to do that costs less than what you make an hr, donut frees up your time and they are the experts on cleaning, free your mind and your life.
@tututishtosh7 жыл бұрын
Give guitar lessons and make enough money to hire someone else to clean the house. Now I am going to say sthg that will make some people scream racism, or some such idiotry, but first listen. I've been hiring women, and they are always Latin women, to clean, cook, and do my laundry for 40 years, and here's the secret - the women I hire _LOVE_ to clean, do laundry, and cook (well, they're not always such great cooks, but some are fabulous), and the _reason_ is because they don't have any advanced education, and so for them, keeping a home is the highest aspiration and value they have. I do not belittle them for this, in fact, I worship the ground they walk on. I do not look down on my Latina housekeepers, in fact, they have been my closest friends and confidants. They possess a large store of wisdom about life, have great senses of humor, and generally are as intelligent or more than anyone else in our society. They simply have been deprived, for various unfair or tragic reasons, of an education, but an education is not everything, b/c they generally have happier dispositions and have much wisdom and many tales of experience to offer me. I love them. I too love my home and value its order highly, but in order to accomplish anything in our society that requires a high level of education, you just don't have time to do the manual chores. I know, this is heirarchy, but it is an inescapable fact of life on this planet. Life is not fair, but money and position are not everything that is valuable either.

I'm a tad bit OCD, so I've been practicing and found it helpful to start very small. Maybe I leave the one shoe tied tighter for the whole day, or I turn off a three way switch at the most convenient location rather than going back so as to leave all the switches down when the light is off. Or for me there are many things that happen before I can get out of bed, so just focus on opening both eyes and keeping them open when my alarm goes off... I know I'm weird, but hopefully this will help someone else think small, so in the end they can win big.

Has created problems for me, such as getting fired from several jobs and self humiliation and self discouragement, creating negativity in my mind from all that. I have been late for appointments, gatherings, going out, jobs, picking up my kids from school or their activities. It doesn't matter what it is, I have had a problem with this! I try so hard to correct this and nothing works! I have gotten advice to set my clock back earlier and I will still be late! I hate time and I feel I cannot control it, what is wrong with me? HELP!

Unexpressed anger can drive this lack of punctuality. It's really a form of disrespecting others, so ask yourself to examine what is bothering you about a specific person. Sit down and write a pros/cons list if it comes to that, about that issue. Wish you the best, Julie. Tackling an issue the right way with someone important to you is a learnable skill. Take on the project of learning how. God bless you.

Evan thank you so much for sharing this. I always go through your older videos whenever I need or am starting to hone a skill, and self-discipline is the one on the top of my list. I am not sure if you are still taking requests for topics, but I personally would love to see your take on self-discipline and motivation for the self-employed. I think for beginning entrepreneurs or freelancers, it is easy to think that it is a simple dream life and that you won't need any grit, but knowing differently I would really like to know what your thoughts are on how to keep working even when you have a wide-open schedule, don't really feel like it or there is a lull in your determination. Sort of a beginners guide, I think it could help so many new entrepreneurs out there who are worried about the hard work involved, and who don't really know how to tackle the fear of the work vs the pull of the dream. Thanks so much!! :-)

Your videos are very useful and thank you for sharing. I have question, I want to start a youtube channel for children as a charity group. I have no video editing skills. How easy is it to edit videos for youtube and what tools are available out there ? Appreciate your input.

Hi Evan 😄 Good subject. This makes me think. Every day I work on myself and my discipline and I realise that indeed I can't keep up with certain disciplines after a while, although it's about things I need. 1st I have to decide Which is the most important self discipline for my business 2nd I have to see What is the smallest step that I can take to get there 3rd I have to see How I can do it in a fun way Didn't figure out nr. 1 yet. A few things came up and I have to choose ... Thanks for remembering me 😄 #DISCOVER #BTA7
