How to target BIG CARP

Everyone loves big carp, and there's lots of tips and tactics we can use to increase our chances of catching them. This month I run through some of my favourite ways of targeting the biggies while fishing a rock hard gravel pit in Germany. Temperatures are soaring over 30+ degrees but there's always a chance or two to be had. I cover mindset, watercraft, baits and rigs for big fish, and manage to get lucky with one of the venue's prized-residents, a massive mirror of 62lb known as Fantail.

Awesome angling. I really like your practical, nuts and bolts approach. Simple rigs. Strong gear, good bait, and right location. I also like the rod security aspect mentioned. I just don't understand the current trend for unsecured rods with rod tips in the air, at take off trajectory! How many people are losing their rods right now, because that is the current Carpy fashion. And a fish dragging round a rod isn't funny!

@@SimonCrow mate ive kind of followed you for years and its great to see your still going,i dropped out of the sport for a few years after losing faith in the way we as carp anglers became with each other both in print and on the bank,i was involved with a small bait company and gave 15 years to it,ive never let the fire go out for my deep love of bait making or fishing for that matter,wow ! What a different world it is now,i had all my gear pinched,final straw so to speak,ive just got a set of harrison ballistas off a mate and im slowly building my kit back up,i need a month to recover after a trip to the tackle shop bloody expensive,we had spods and walked our lines down the bank when i was at it,anyway love your vids they inspire me that there are decent lads still about and thats enough for me,take care mate and i cant wait for the next one 😁

Hi Simon, Could you please explain why you use a coated braid but remove the coating for your hook link, Instead of just Using a braided hooklink that never had a coating on when purchased.. I'm intrigued👍👍👍 Andrew.

I could baffle you with sales bullshit but the simple answer is, I’ve used braided hooklinks for about 35 years. When I joined Avid two years ago, they didn’t have any in stock as it was a slow seller and they were going to discontinue it. They had some coated braid though, so I tried peeling the skin off and I liked the look of it. I tried it and caught well with it, and that’s how it all happened. I now prefer it to the braid Avid do because it has a waxy feel to it once you take the coating off. This makes it slightly stiffer but not so much it isn’t supple enough to be sucked in by a carp. It just makes it that bit better at avoiding tangles on the cast. I hope that answers your question 👍

This is why I don’t promote carp fishing in the West, blessed with a few huge fish wild/public venues & don’t want locals or foreigners taking up few opportunities that exist. Fortunately the angling is rock hard so the want to be “pro carp anglers” come & go.
