Tips for teaching your child YES vs NO at home!
1) Grab your child's FAVORITE things (toys, food, activities, whatever your child likes)
2) Target YES! first! (children often say YEAH instead of yes)
- offer a VISUAL - Big green check mark drawn on paper is fine or low-tech AAC board/visual
- MODEL (or Hand UNDER hand if necessary) touch YES for them after giving the prompt "WANT COOKIE?!" YES! and help them TOUCH the check and pop the cookie into their mouth or blow the bubbles immediately!
- Decrease number of models after your child has grasped the concept of touching the check mark and work on imitating the actions of independently touching the check mark/picture/visual OR nodding their head YES! and provide your child's request immediately again!
- Be EXAGERATIVE! when shaking your head YES or being overly excited!
- Decrease trials of verbal cues by using the prompt "WANT COOKIE!?" and provide the VISUAL of the check mark OR exaggeratively shaking your head to move to the next level and see if your child will say "YEAH!" or "YES!" - if not, then MODEL and repeat!
- Once your child SAYS yeah, or yes, then ONLY reinforce when your child answers verbally, but keep prompting with the visuals when needed.
Behavioral Tip*** If your child is responding with behaviors (turning their head away, crying on the floor, tantruming, whining/grunting) - involve dad/grandma and ask them yes/no and provide the item for them!
1) AFTER your child understands YES, then target NO! Offer your child something they do NOT like or would NOT want. (i.e. an onion, a tomato, a dirty sock, a leaf soaked in olive oil - get creative here to raise motivation) use same prompt "WANT LEAF?!"
2) Model NOOOO! Using exaggeration and visuals + modeling and decreasing visual/verbal/tactile cueing once the child is beginning to understand concept!
3) Continue to try to give the child the non-preferred objects when they do not respond to raise motivation level - if they don't accept it, just set it next to them or hand it to them - if no response or responding yes.
YES and NO!
1) Once your child understands YES and NO separately! Combine and offer BOTH things they WANT and things they DO NOT want in order to decrease echolalic tendencies.
2) THEN move into yes/no concepts (negations) once the child understands YES/NO using wants/needs (i.e. "Is this a COW?! NOOO! That's silly!)
The sillier the better!!! :)
MOST IMPORTANT TIP:
ALWAYS, give your child what they ask or answer! For example, if they say "YES" even if they mean "NO," give them what they said yes to! Why?! That is the ONLY way to draw attention to what they are saying! Same thing for "no!" - If they are used to saying "no!" to your question all the time, DO NOT give it to them and if it's positive, give it to someone else or eat the cookie yourself! **even if it upset them because they have to be upset to self-reflect to figure out what they are saying in order to keep getting the same response and therefore, change the response!!
Looking for a "Language Explosion?!" Give your child CHOICES and use YES/NO concepts to further skill set!
This techniques teaches children the POWER of CHOICES!

I wanted to come back and say thank you! I used this method to teach my 2 years old child with ASD to respond to my question in Yes/No format. While she knew how to say yes and no, it was never is response to a question we asked. She is very self directed. For example, In the past, we would ask 'Do you want milk?' She would not respond but just stare at us until she eventually says 'want milk'. After using this method for about a week, she started correctly responding to our questions. It's been about 5 months now and my little one is a pro at this. We are now working on building reciprocal conversation. But I wanted to sincerely thank you for these videos.

I tried doing this today for my 22mo son. He got pointing at the sign right away, but won't nod or say "yes." When I say "yes" (Want candy? Yes! Want candy!) though, he giggles and giggles, so at least i know that's what he wants, whereas before he wouldn't make any reaction to a yes/no question. I tried to expand on the concept with his sippy cup,(want milk? Yes!) he just grabbed the cup and walked away, didn't even look at me, the little stinker....

Haha! Yes kids are sneaky! Definitely keep being dramatic and exaggerative and continue modeling yeah! With high affect and hand him one at a time like one at a time gummy‘s or a little bit of juice at a time. If he can get it on his own and that defeats the purpose lol! I think he knows that!! Lol Then the next time just the way instead of modeling and using the visual and verbal for him just see what happens and also if you have a dad or a sibling available that can model saying yeah super excitedly give it to them whatever it is that you’re working with!

@TheSpeechScoop

I would model it only a couple of times but definitely make sure that the things are preferred or their favorite items so that motivation is high! You can also do hand under hand or prompting of the elbow because hand over hand does not respect body autonomy so we want to give them as much independence as possible!

@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 3 жыл бұрын
hey there! Honestly.. The best way that I've had experience with is first, taking a log of every time your child goes to the bathroom/potty the best you can, as in, check the diaper every 30 min or hour - set a reminder on your phone) and write "wet" or "dry" during each time slot that you check. THEN, after you have that data, keep the same feeding (eating and drinking) time as before so that hopefully the schedule will match as much as possible, and just take your child and place them on the potty for 1 - 2 minutes and give them an M&M or a treat for sitting there.... THEN - IF they DO potty while they are sitting there - POSITIVE praise and attention and A LOT of TREATS or M& Ms to raise the motivation for the child to potty again the next time they are sitting there. Repeat every day. Lots of work - but you can do it!! Hang in there! :)

Teaching positive reinforcement with a sugary cookie is not a healthy strategy
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 2 жыл бұрын
I would have to agree! Any treat that a child likes can be used! The clients that I’ve worked with have just always wanted a cookie or other sugary snack because they are limited, but each child is different! You could also do this without positive reinforcement & just by interacting using the child’s intrinsic motivation by playing side by side & modeling with a stuffed animal during an unstructured play routine!
