I wanted to add that I thought your point about the sound of the dog whistle always being neutral with respect to emotion -- never showing possible anger -- was brilliant. (My experience has been that when your dog picks up on your anger or frustration he's libel to not respond to anything you do.)

Lmao how could someone dislike this video? Ol hatin ass 😂 I found this video tremendously helpful ^.^ we just got a new puppy in the warehouse where I work and whenever someone forgets to close the gate he just sprints out into the street and it’s dangerous in multiple ways. My acme whistle comes in the mail in a few days and since the owner won’t train the dog, I’ll take initiative. Plus he’s such a happy dog, I think it’ll be a great rewarding experience for both of us 💕 thank you for sharing 😇

Thank you for such a helpful video for our new 4 year old rescue dog, Dakota. I got quite a giggle from the “roll in badger poo or rotten frog”. We are in dry Southern California and don’t encounter those particular things. We find different gross, smelly things like coyote poop, skunk, and opossum roadkill.

So when the dog has been fully trained in this method, do you still reward them with the treat when they recall or just praise?
@RoyvonCoUk5 жыл бұрын
Always recommend rewarding your dog for good behaviour especially with a treat. But as your training progresses a treat is not a prerequisite to coming back. Thanks for commenting.

Great information about using a whistle. The only thing I do not like about a whistle is that I do not want just anyone to be able to call my dog. I had a buddy that trained his dog to respond to a whistle and some jack ass drove up along side of us and thought it would cute to blow a dog whistle. Well my buddy's dog jumped out the car window and hurt himself. Luckily his dog was not that badly hurt but still that is one problem with teaching your dog on a whistle. If you do use a whistle teach a code like 3 short bursts of the whistle. Its a bit more tricky to teach your dog this but I think worth their safety.

Pawsuasive Dog Teaching jeeeeepers I never thought of someone doing that as a prank, how awful. I’m glad I read this comment because now I’ll be able to take this into account. & a specific blow theme like two or three in a row would probably combat this problem, great idea. But I’ll hopefully not have to learn this through trial and error. I’m happy the dog didn’t get badly injured

What if it is a pit that was a breeding dog and is 6. I took her off leash at the local school for a couple nights where it is fenced in and things were ok. The one night there was deer and she went after the deer like she wanted to... play with it... it took me an hour to find her. Can a whistle with proper training help stop that instinct? Thank you so much if you answer!!!
@DocHoliday125853 жыл бұрын
Also, I have only had her 4 weeks. We have bonded a lot and she has done great with me telling her sit, stay, and to not jump on people. But its when she gets too excited I feel like I can't control her. Is she too old for recall training?
@RoyvonCoUk3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean! All dogs are trainable, we suggest training her around effective recall training and include the kind of environmental factors that you could come across, as in deers. It's more challenging with an older dog but definitely possible

First time I’ve seen using one whistle instead of three times like the other people. I was wondering if using one or three also but I think one.

A very lovely and very useful video. Thanks for posting! If you ever consider another video, perhaps you might tackle the following question: what do you do when your dog does not come back to the sound of the whistle after several calls because he has discovered something more interesting? Do you simply persist until he finally comes (or doesn't)? I've heard some trainers say never say come to the dog unless you know he will come. Is it the same for a whistle -- is there a point when you have to put it down until you can get back to a more controlled environment? Thanks again!
@RoyvonCoUk5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. Great question, actually. My strategy would be to be creative in my training and come up with as many setups, scenarios and controlled distraction in training as possible, so that I've covered as many real life situations as possible. If I'm not sure of my dog's recall in a specific situation, because I haven't yet trained for it (for example around livestock or other dogs etc), then I keep them on a long lead and make a plan to add this into training. If a dog ignores the recall cue (whistle or name call), I would just go get my dog rather than call them again and plan for building that context into my practice:)
@semilyoful4 жыл бұрын
What do you do when you're training and they DON'T come? If you're in the park and you call them, you use the whistle and they ignore you? Thanks!
@twojamamusia10634 жыл бұрын
You just made a mistake that's covered in the video - do NOT use the recall until you're absolutely certain that the dog will connect the whistle to something he or she is absolutely crazy about. In my opinion you should start over with basic calling your dog at home, if it works try to gradually add some distractions, if it doesn't try doing something crazy - jumping around, just to draw attention and reward your dog each time he/she does what you want (for starters - his/hers attention is what you want, so even pointing eyes in your direction is a move towards recall, for which the dog should be rewarded). Along with that you should probably add step by step whistle training explained in the video, but following what she says, not rushing it :) That's just my point of view, I'm no dog trainer ;-)

Listen and learn.. The first thing a dog Should learn is to learn THE recall cue so she can running around freely and you could her safe from Harm for herself and other people when you see iT from a distance

There is a language problem. This was intended to be ironic. To teach the dog to come back you reward him with his “number one thing”. The number one thing of my dog is to run around freely, so to reward him, for coming back to me I have to let him run freely, but running freely is not coming back so I either do not reward him, by calling him or I reward him by letting him run freely, but then he does not get back to me... Yokes are not funny if you have to explain them.

Interesting how all the “recalls” showed in the video were literally under no distraction, no examples of a recall under proper distraction, not a surprise, as all proper dog people know, positive only doesn’t work, that’s why the best trainers don’t use it.
