Just found one in the back garden, it smelled and looked edible but did the scratch test and it did indeed turn yellow, thank you 🙏

I don't believe that test is 100% accurate, you may have had an edible one

So I found an Agaricus growing in my yard, bruise test revealed no yellowing on the cap even on the edge, in fact the bruises on the cap turned brown, however when cutting the base in half there was yellowing and the smell was anise like with earthy tone. I did a microwave cook test which didn't result in a strong phenolic odor, rather it smelled earthy but not quite a true MUSHROOMY (portabllo like) smell. The cooked mushroom flesh turned yellowish and the pink gills turned Grey. I've been looking all over the internet trying to ID which agaricus it could be(Southeastern North Carolina) but it doesn't seem to line up exactly with any of the info I could find. 🤷

I wonder if it might be a horse mushroom. I heard they can turn a bit yellow. Sort of half way between being poisonous and edible.

Agaricus sylvicola (a.k.a Wood mushroom) is what I think it could have been now. They are similar to the horse mushroom in terms of scent but I found it growing in leaf detritus in quite a wooded area and they were quite small compared to horse mushroom.

These things are little mysteries. Even experts in labs have difficulty identifying them sometimes

It sounds like Agaricus sylvicola. The only thing doesn't match that Agaricus sylvicola generally grows inside forests.@@JT_Dudeman4250

I have had some of these pop up in my garden but didn't know about the yellow flesh. The ones i examined didn't have yellow inside but other than that looked identical. I didn't eat it as i was trying to identify it first. We currently grow oyster mushrooms in a crate in our bathroom and bought the spawn just to be sure. I would like to try wild mushrooms but am a bit nervous in case i can't identify it. I have some mushroom books but some just have drawing instead of photos. It is great to see these videos as you get more of a 3D view rather than just from photos. So just to be clear, if the flesh under the skin is white and the gills are a pinky brown, with a slight browning on top of the peak and it has a white collar it is an edible horse/field mushroom?

Had this experience today. My 9 year old that's been all excited about mushrooms found a grove of these in Grandpa's yard (Eugene, OR, USA) and the two of them worked together to identify it as an edible agaricus...well then we went to sautee it up in the pan and if you miss it on the scratch test you would be hard pressed to miss it on the 'cook test'. It turned like a neon yellow, almost like a highlighter and smelled gross and chemically. I can still taste it in my memory thinking about it tonight. So, if it turns yellow while cooking.. POISONOUS...do not eat. That is if you miss it on the scratch test..like grandpa did. glad my kid wasn't poisoned today. ugh

Just found a big mushroom about 100mm diameter 20mm thick stalk, light beige with dark brown speckled patch in centre, smells edible to me, like a normal mush almost

Not all the members of the Flavescentes group of Agaricus are poisonous. Indeed the Horse Mushroom, perhaps the finest edible mushroom of all, is a yellow-stainer.
@MK-ti2oo Жыл бұрын
I've found hundreds of The Prince (agaricus Augustus) and noticed the bases of many of them turn yellow as well but only that very end piece.
@ophrynion9 ай бұрын
This yellow matter is very subjective.
@brodiwheeler75834 ай бұрын
Agaricus Silvicola is a almond extract/anise scented mushroom, and will slowly stain yellowish where injured, but the staining is faint and fades… whereas A. Xanthodermus stains quickly yellow and persists especially near the base of the stipe, and is not almond extract/anise scented… it’s more caustic smelling.

Is there a sort of way to tell in importance? I found a mushroom that smells normal, its got the skirt and doesnt stain, but the gills are white. It did just pop up today, though, so is that an age thing?
@justinflowers2111 Жыл бұрын
white gills often means the mushroom is poisonous. for example the destroying Angel is all white and it is deadly.
@fantasy2reality717 Жыл бұрын
@Gregbliss no, I tossed it when it was mentioned that it was poisonous. I'm pretty sure eating a poisonous mushroom wouldnt end up in a trip anyway- the goal was to forage for food, not drugs.

A horse mushroom will be very slow to turn a light yellow, where as this mushroom in the video is quick to turn bright yellow!
@DD-hy1nl Жыл бұрын
That is good to know about seeing 'yellow' when you scratch the top of the wild mushroom. But shouldn't we be worried that by scratching the mushroom the poison can get into or under our nails or skin?
@thebaghead7498 Жыл бұрын
Don't worry! The only ways mushrooms can hurt you are by spore inhalation, or ingestion. Just make sure to wash your hands after before touching your face or eating and you'll be totally safe :)

The most important thing for agaricus sp. Is smell! The yellow color also, but smell (ink.. carbon) is the key for poisinous agaricus mushroom.

It is very confusing...Just tell us upfront if it is edible or not. That's all we need.
@UKWILDCRAFTS7 ай бұрын
It’s not that confusing. I’m giving details how to identify. Being told whether you can eat something should not be enough. If you don’t want to learn identification I would recommend not eating wild mushrooms
