Three summers ago I went to look at a chrome bumper MGB. Clean, no rust, but had been sitting for years. Parked next to it was a red Ferrari 308 with a broken timing belt. It had broken while sitting at a stop light, so maybe not much broken? Anyway, the seller had passed on and the daughter just "wanted her garage space back". Price? $15K And nope, didn't have the cash...

I got a deal I thought was a scam back in the pre internet days. Back then you would just show up and get robbed. It wasn't a high end car, value was around $18k and the seller had it listed for $4,000 from an original price of $15k. I showed up armed to the teeth with backup also armed to the teeth in case things went South. Turns out the lady had ordered a new car planning to sell the old one before the new car arrived and being in GM country in the early 90's, no one wanted this Nissan. Her new car arrived and her credit wouldn't handle both cars so the Nissan had to go before she could get the new one. She was down to her last 48 hours before the dealership called off the deal on the new car. I ended up paying the $3,754 she owed on the Nissan and taking it home.

I had a Similar situation happen with my current daily. It's a 08 Nissan xterra 6SPD, the guy was asking $6800 and said he was moving out of country in a week and needed to sell asap. Had really sketchy description too like "absolutely tank in the snow" " this is a unit to drive". I was nervous but called since the car was only 15 min away and surprisingly the guy answered his phone but he was already out of the country. He said I could go meet his brother and check the car out so I did and ended up buying the car for $4500. I've drove the car for 1.5 years now putting 25k miles on it with 0 problems. Best car I've had yet and I managed to pay half of the kbb at the time of purchase from a owner in Taiwan. Man was I nervous but it paid off!!

The operation you described at the start with the closed or smaller lot is something my stepdad fell for. Had a legit website, cars that checked out, they even had a "physical location" on google maps that checked out. The google listing for this address had their phone number and email on it, everything. They'd somehow completely hijacked this dealers online presence, using promotions to put the link to their copy of the dealers website above the legit one. Calling the dealer off the google listing led to the fake dealer, and after our money was gone I managed to get in contact with the real dealer, who'd been fighting the hijacking for a minute now. Smaller dealer.

I just had a similar "is it/is it not a scam" experience. Been on the lookout for my dream car the past couple of months for a 05 impreza sti with the Prodrive pack, wide track and dccd in blue. I see one pop up on Facebook marketplace. Good condition, good mileage and 25% below market value. Online check and online mot history seem to line up. However, red flag number one, its been up for a week already and hadn't sold. Send him a message asking if there's service history. 2nd red flag, the reply is just solitary "yes". I ask some more questions and that I'd like to view it, but get ghosted for about 2 weeks despite occasinally chasing every couple of days. He finally replies so I ask to view it that very evening while I have an open line of communication. Red flag 3 and 4 - he wants to meet in a supermarket car park and he still hasn't given me his phone number. I presume he doesn't want people knowing where the car lives so I insist that he brings ID and the registration documents. So I leave work after a 12hr shift to drive 3 hours to Liverpool by myself to view a car at night. I don't bring any cash with me, and I share my live location with my gf just in case. Driving there, I'm just praying I'm not getting catfished. I arrive, and after a tense 10min wait the car pulls up followed by his friend in a Fiesta. I go over everything, and the car seems legit. Numbers match, and despite a few small issues, the car was good. Definetly a deal. I bank transfer him a token deposit and arrange to collect the car on my day off. So, a few days later, I hire a car and I still don't get full confirmation of the time and place until I'm already on the road. Drop the hire car and grab a taxi to the house. This is it, if he's not there, I'm screwed because the car hire place is now shut and getting home will be a huge faff. Fortunately, he is there and after taking the car for a test drive, I bank transfer him the rest of the funds. It takes over an hour for the funds to appear in his account, in which time we have a ood conversation. Turns out, he had recently split from his partner, who had taken the kids with her. He needed to sell his pride and beauty for funds. He explained he had been in a bad head space, which is why he hadn't been replying to messages. Showing me his phone, he had unanswered messages from about 20 other people so I was dam lucky. I've had the car a week now, and I love it. Buts a huge grin on my face everytime. For the right car, it can sometimes be worth taking a calculated risk.
