Most wild ducks I’ve seen you can tell their genders apart by color because they developed it to survive. Males are more colorful to attract females and females are less colorful so they can blend in to the nest and protect their young. Edit. Thanks for 982 (almost 1k) likes! My mother probably wouldn’t be proud because she doesn’t care. BUT HECK IT ANYWAYS.

Males don’t exactly “attract” females 😅 It’s more like they spot a female and force themselves on her..She gets pretty much 0 choice so there’s no attracting (it’s why they developed such weird genitalia..because males force themselves on females)

This is called sexual dimorphism, the most common type of wild duck to see this on is always mallards, and muscovy ducks with their faces :)

@CrayolaRayola yep! If a female mallard is sitting on a nest, she wants to be dun brown colored with a camouflage pattern so that she can hide and keep her eggs safe. For males, it's not as important to be camouflaged, for them sexual selection is the more important thing, so they have green heads. Same deal with peacocks
