I was really impressed with the caliber of the video/audio. So many are full of shaking and quick motions that make them hard to watch or contain outside noises that have nothing to do with the video. So kudos in making an easy to watch video. I found the testing contained in this video extremely valuable. However, as mentioned by a previous commenter, the video stopped short of the actual replacement of the value. That may have been due to the use of gasket maker to fill a leak previously or the implication at the beginning of the video that the replacement only involved the removal of two bolts. But being a novice with car repairs I'm not sure which. That said, thanks again for making a great video.

Super. I think i may be getting closer. I have a 1998, 3.3L 4x4 auto. 170,000 miles. My wife filled gas tank one day last week while it idling and it started acting like it was missing after that. She drove it 200 miles through the mountains and got it home. No codes. I opened the gas cap, that looks good, and the tank depressurized for no kidding, 5 to 6 minutes. At first it was heavy and wet fumes coming out, then eventually faded away. No visible leaks anywhere, or damage. I loosened the gas cap and drove it for 18 miles. No change. Acts like it's mildly missing. Plug and wires only 1 year old. No codes. Also, the RPM gauge shakes about 200 RPMs when it feels like it's missing. Any ideas? Do ya think my ignition coil just happened to go bad at the same time? Would that not toss a code? Thanks!

I use a 9 volt battery to test the valve and check if air is going through it should be close the one I replaced was leaking the plunger was not closing all the way.
@johntube25256 жыл бұрын
Danny Ordonez, We tried a 9 volt battery to test a vent valve and we could hear a small click, but we could still blow air through it. Since it was a brand new vent valve we then tried hooking it up to the vehicles 12 volt battery, positive and negative, using aligator clips, and we heard a much louder clunk and we could not blow air through it. So I think you need at least 12 volts to test a vent valve.

How do you go about checking the ground (#1pin) from the ECM? That's what gives the valve the signal it needs to close. Some of them can be done by certain scanners, but they cost a lot of money. Also, it depends on the YM&M. But if you don't have those types of tools, then it's almost impossible to test. Bench testing a valve like that 1 is not 100% accurate it needs the ground circuit from the ECM to truly and 100% definitively make sure it's functioning properly. So, to sum this all up. You can run a lead wire to the inside of your vehicle to see with your multimeter if the ground does turn on. Also, check by ohming the wire to make sure it has no breaks. There are many things to consider before throwing parts at it, in hopes of a quick fix.

I don't know about the maxima, but on my 97 nissan hardbody p0446 can also be caused by no power to the vent solenoid, e.g. not having the harness connected correctly, or circuit break, or fried ecu. If you have a bad canister, it may throw a p1447 because the canister leaks the charcoal into the line, and somewhere along the path towards and after the purge valve, it can get clogged up.
@johnsmith-sk1ep6 жыл бұрын
In case anybody reads this, my canister turned out to be bad. I actually don't know anything about these canisters but I assume there is some membrane inside that keeps the carbon secured and since mine was leaking carbon pellets, I assume it was bad. Instead of taking it apart and/or refilling the carbon or shelling out $200 for a new canister, I took a nylon bag from a used tea bag (no joke), put it over the end of the output vent and screwed back the screw clamp on the hose and canister port, reset the computer codes and haven't had a problem since. What ever screen you use, just make sure it doesn't restrict the air flow but it's fine enough to keep the carbon pellets in the canister.

@RetroPCUser6 жыл бұрын
With it open (12V turned off with the car off), it'll allow you to fill up your car. If it doesn't close (don't hear a click with the car running), it means the relay inside the vent control is bad. The part itself isn't pricey, however, on some cars, it's inside the tank area. On my Oldsmobile Intrigue, it's mounted on the side and can get removed without issues. Remember: place a fuse in the positive (red) wire to check for a short circuit as well.

Really cool video. Thanks for sharing. Will this apply to an "Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit"? That's the description my code reader is giving me with code no. P0446. I'm not sure if I should just replace a part, though, I'm not sure which one it is. I have a Pathfinder 1997.

Why couldn't you just plug it back up to the canister and turn the key? Why the RC battery?
@garymiller20566 жыл бұрын
He needed the battery for the ground, Dustin. The ground is controlled by the ECU. (I think)

Should I run gas empty before opening the hose

No need to. These are vacuum lines.

You could also have someone turn the switch to on position while your back there and listen for the thunk then you won't need a battery pack.

I'm not sure that would work, greenspir, You would get voltage there but the computer controls ground. It is normally open, but when is it closed? It is closed when the purge is on. That is when it would be grounded?? Too many questions.

Don't you need to blow air thru the valve at the same time you power it up to see if it is in fact working mechanically as well... I am fixing to test mine, thanks for the great vids!
@CarsNToys9 жыл бұрын
Metal Maniac Yea man you can do that as an extra step and verify air is indeed getting through
@garymiller20566 жыл бұрын
I think when it is "powered up" is when air does NOT go through. It is normally open. When you are driving and gas is being used up , the vent is open to equalize the pressure. when you are parked it is also open . When pressure rises in the tank , the valve allows vapors to enter the canister It closes when the purge valve opens to remove vapors from the canister some time after the engine is started. That is when a vacuum develops which the pressure sensor reads. If it does not hold vacuum, that is when the computer throws a leak code. Long be I hope this helps.

yea that's true but he did show you how to find it what it looks like and what needs to be done to remove it so if you a replacement part you could just do it in reverse order..

This is not really a way to find issue . My car will detect most issues. Like detection of electrical failure. So why all the checks?
