Good info although I would suggest if pushing a live electrical switch I would be using a insulated tool to trigger it - if the switch itself is broken OR if you break it in the process you might get a Zap !

Even though the light comes on the UV output could be weak. Is there a device commercially available to test the output of our UV lamps that's economically priced?

If water is leaking into the quartz sleeve, possible concerns would be an oversized pump, failed gaskets or an actual crack in the glass sleeve.

you didn't explain about the starters ? I brought a new bulb and tested it and just the coils glowed up orange and not fire up the bulb so I replaced the starter and now uv is working as it should

Replace UV bulbs every 12 months of operation time. Only use genuine Laguna UV bulbs in Laguna systems.

T he ultraviolet lamp lights just fine. It's 60 watts. The problem is that it's not killing the algae. It was off all winter with the water flowing through and I turned it on in the spring, because in winter my fish feed on the algae. Any Idea why it's no longer killing algae. This will be the third summer for this bulb.

UV bulbs generally have a germicidal period of 12-14 months. After this run time, they should be replaced.

I bought a 45w Iv filter worked for 3 days then stopped I used my multi meter and everything getting power and no trip switch I did notice while testing that my 45w filter only has a 36w bulb Could it have burned out because of that ? But bulb does look good still

I would assume not if the ballast is rated for a higher wattage. A tripped GFI is the most common issue that is often overlooked. Make sure flow ratings are not being exceeded.

Led screens don't give out UV light so we are quite safe viewing this it's like telling us not to touch the screen if someone films a fire in case we burn ourselves

Well, you should know how it works, at least I like knowing how all my stuff works. Anyways the hazard isn't if you look at it for a quick couple second burst, it's when you say "cool!" and you stare at it for minutes, or you leave it exposed and run it next to you. It will give you a sunburn after some time, and if you keep looking at it for multiple minutes your eyes get damaged and it feels like you have sand in your eyes for a few days, it sucks but it isn't going to harm you long term even if you did that. Testing a bulb is not dangerous, unless you worked on the assembly line and did this all day every day, then you'd need a proper uv shield around it and exposed parts of your body.

Come on, looking at the light for half a second shouldn't damage your eyes (Don't take the risk). If the emission wavelength is below 300 nm (nanometres) i.e. UV-C radiation, it could be harmful. Do you know the wavelength? And I believe you should not expose your skin too, which you did. But, how did you know it was working if you did not look at it?

All of these bulbs emit at 254nm, so they are quite hazardous. Depending on the quartz envelope used on the bulb, they may also put out 184nm. You can tell if this is the case because 184nm will produce ozone.
