Simple fix for the string algae is to add more of those Iris plants you have. That probably a third of what you need.

I have placed Iris plants in my Koi Pond. They grow slowly but as they increase in size I see the string Algae actually starting to thin out. They do work, and Water Lettuce works also.

Would having cichlid only pond solve algae issues since they eat it
@BackyardWaterGarden2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I don't think they would survive in my climate. I would have to move them when the temperature gets too cold.

We've had luck with 4 oz of barley extract once-a-week in our 4000 gallon pond.

I've heard great things about Barley extract. I may give it a try, thanks

Would an algae control chemical help with this mess?

have you tried the igen?

I have read about it but have not had any first hand experience with it. Seems like it would work well once you have it set right.

Commented on the installation video, figured I'd comment here too: your UV is installed backwards, so you're mainly sterilizing beneficial bacteria leeched from your filters. You're cleaning the water before it gets to the UV light by putting it after the filter in the system ... you need to put it before the filter for it to be most effective.

Oh boy do i feel your pain. I have a 8 thousand gallon pond. The first year i felt so hopeless . The only way i could get it out was with a rake , rake some up and twist . I did this about everyday until the pond balanced it was total hell let me tell you.

Your pond is beautiful!!! How many gallons is it?
@BackyardWaterGarden4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It is about 2500 gallons.

You're zapping the water being circulated to kill the algae. Way more effective if you zap the string algae directly. (Careful, UV light can be dangerous to any living matter it comes in contact with(protect your eyes, your fish, desired plants, etc.). Also use the correct wavelength.

Try using Hydrogen Peroxide, you can inject it directly at the string algae or add to the pond water......some things that causes string algae, Fish overcrowding Stagnant water with no aeration so add air Decaying plant matter Not enough pond plants, use more plants to take in the excess nutrients causing the algae

Thanks for all the helpful information.

Why waterfall is not working? For string algae try hydrogen peroxide. You can also use a little bit of pond salt. If you leave waterfall off you should have one or 2 aerators. Better when water circulate and oxygenate at all times.

How big do tilapia get? Will they survive in a cooler climate? Do they get along with koi and goldfish? I have no experience with them.

It may be fine for the gold fish, but it's not for me lol

Add salt 0.3 percent
@BackyardWaterGarden Жыл бұрын
But just remember the salt level will not go down unless you do a water change.

You’re not supposed to clean that filter off with the hose you’re supposed to clean it off with pond water for the reason being is the bacteria grows on that and that’s what it eats the nitrate and nitrates, and your hose has chlorine in it, and that kills the bacteria

having very clear water means you'll get this algae instead as more sunlight reaches the bottom
