Concise and insightful, I saved it in a combat playlist and will drill it. Plus it's a nice muscle training although I fear people will think it's sexual harassment if I say "come here my little pinkie kettlebell" to throw them around

Few months ago, at our wrestling / BJJ Saturday class, we had a high level grappler teaching us that move. At 50, I thought I forgot my wrestling in the late 90s. Then boom, the last thing I remember is I am suplexing all students and the instructor. Sadly, they never re-taught that move again at the academy. I realized that as soon as one of us is dominant at one move or technique, they never go over the technique again. (sigh).

i was wondering sometimes i land in these positions how do u deal with when they have a tight hold and nasty crank on your neck as u land sometimes they get it too tight to von flue choke or get my hands inside to break it and its not gonna choke but i kinda wanna preserve my neck beginners esp tend to crank the shit out of it
@WrestlingUniversity
@WrestlingUniversity Жыл бұрын
When you lift them off the ground and steer them towards landing on their own back they should let go to brace themselves for the fall. If they are so inclined to neck crank than don’t be afraid to give them a little encouragement to let go by making the fall more intense. I’m not saying go full WWE, but we are in a violent sport and giving them a good thud when they hit the ground will soften their hold on your neck.

Are you not exposed to a sagging headlock from that side body lock? You quite literally put his arm on your face/neck
@WrestlingUniversity
@WrestlingUniversity Жыл бұрын
Good eye. Though it APPEARS as if the Hip Sag Headlock is a viable defense, by “crowding” his hips with your “underhook to shot-put throw to body lock” you leave him no room to rotate his own hips for a defensive throw. Remember, in order to sag his hips he needs mobility of his hips which you have denied him by pulling him in to you. It’s important to note that whenever you engage in an upperbody takedown there is indeed a chance you too may be thrown, but this is the very nature of offense: whenever you attempt an offensive maneuver that is when you are most vulnerable to an offensive maneuver being done to you. When you’re confident in your position/moves and get to them quickly and with force you decrease their chances of countering. Good question.

@Froggy This is probably the only entry to the side bodylock that I would recommend. By throwing by that underhook, he is in so deep and has such great angle that the opponent is in deep shit. I have seen zero BJJ people teach it like this. They try to get to the side bodylock from the single leg, and their hips are too far away. That’s when it’s sagging headlock city. Last thing you have here defensively is makikomi. You’ll get that on a lot of BJJ guys, but this guy is a D1 wrestler and will be lifting immediately when he gets there. If the lift fails, he will likely drop to the single or drop to the crotch and lift. It’s when people stand around there like they’re safe when they get thrown.

@@josephbreza-grappling9459 funny that you replied. I just asked the question because I've learned to not side body lock from you. I was gonna send you the video and ask you but I forgot about it haha. Thank you both for answering!
@josephbreza-grappling9459
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
@@froggy3496 the reason I teach people not to side bodylock is because of my extensive experience with coaching HS. They will invariably fuck it up. The rule set doesn’t allow for suplexing, so you are forced to lift like he is showing here with excellent timing. Because he is a high level wrestler, he is essentially doing a classic mat return. BJJ people and lots of HS kids absolutely suck at mat returns. So they stand around there and get slammed. All my guys know exactly what to do when someone reaches for the side bodylock off the single. If I had a dollar for every one of my kids who ended a match that way, I would be retired. BUT, what he is showing here is legit, you need to practice it a lot. AND notice how he isn’t overselling it too, like so many dipshits do. He said clearly you better not hang out here, and it’s for those reasons. So, the way I work around this is to have them step in the middle off that bodylock, so that then they can use Greco, like I show in my videos. That way is preferable, especially given the rule sets, because you cannot fall back and pop your hips for a suplex or you will get penalized/Dq’ed. Stepping in the middle prevents all of the defenses I show from there. AND most importantly, it works when you are tired, sweaty, and running out of time on the clock. What he is showing is absolutely legit. And for Freestyle, I like it. But I just choose to keep my new guys away from there. If you do it this way though, you have the best chance. People say BJJ is more technical than wrestling, but the only people I hear saying that are nonwrestlers. All these details matter. His entry to the side bodylock is absolutely legit

Not going to get very far in bjj competition (starting standing) without some judo and wrestling. If you can just stand up, and stay on top, you're winning at every timed and scored level.
