I learnt to fish on a little river in Wales that was only 8 - 10 feet wide ... a lot was in forestry I found it great - I was only 10 at the time :D - as 9 times out 10 you could see the fish you were after. WIsh I could fish it now great fun 50p for my rod from woolworths and 37 1/2 p for a reel from a little angling shop ... and £1.50 for the rod licence :D ... happy days. great instructional video Andy, good to see the little stream made you think.

Andy just in regards to a rod length observation you discussed. I carry a long rod and a short 2wt rod. I find on a couple of cutthroat streams with clear water, I can stand behind a tree or bush and sort of high stick nymph for the fish. The 2wt is for casting on the pools when the water is right. I know not everyone likes two rods but I hate totally changing from one rig to another. Great video! I appreciate the information!

Great video Andy, thanks, that answered all my questions. And I totally agree - whatever works to catch fish. No need for snobbery. I'm definitely going to build a rig like that. I've had a lot of trouble with indicators. The sticky-back foam pinch on indicators were always coming off and I stopped using them as I did not want to pollute the stream. I tried the putty type, but they just made a mess. I ended up dispensing with indicators and just using a big Chernobyl Ant instead but there is no adjustment there. Keep the videos coming :)

@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
It's a funny rod the 8'er, I used to use it for a lot of stuff but I'm finding I use longer rods for most things now. Your 8' will make a fine dry fly rod, and because its short and light you'll be able to fish with it an dry long with techniques like the duo rig 👍

Another great wee vlog 😊 I really like that simple little set up!! I actually made half a dozen or so of your indicators using the sticky foam a while ago. I haven't actually used them properly yet, but trout season isn't far away and I think I'll give them a try on my local water. It's small and tight, I use an 8ft6 rod which I'm sure will be fine for this method 😁 like I said, the Calder I fish is narrow and there's a lot of tree cover, sometimes right down to the water level, so playing a fish or even striking can be a challenge!!! My wee 8ft6 is perfect 😁

@@IBandAndyFishing Hi Andy just a heads up on the quick hook links that got a mention recently. I purchased the 25 pack of small ones and they are ultra small, now the downside they are a nightmare to change out flys on the bank I needed forceps and piers. Personally I will stay with tying to the tippet rings.

Thank you for the informative video. I can see there are a few streams that I can use this French nymphing leader on. One in particular is a low gradient stream that is loaded with small brook trout. I’ve done very well fishing it with dry flies but I think this indicator system may work better. It has a very uneven bottom and you can go from ankle deep to chest deep in just a few steps. Fishing with nymphs can up my game. Thanks again for the video.

I love this video, Andy. Thank you. A few questions, if you don't mind: 1. Would it make sense to use a similar rig for medium to large streams. That is, what would be the advantages/disadvantages of using your indicator rig in the place of typical Euro rig in larger rivers? 2. Do you use a tippet ring for your droppers even when Euro nymphing? BTW, for some reason, I can't see your answers to previous questions. Again, good work. Alex
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, thanks very much! I use something quite similar on bigger rivers, but there isn't any reason why you wouldn't be able to use this set up too, just add a bit more foam for added buoyancy (I didn't need this in the shallow streams). I use tippet rings for basically everything these days, including euro rigging. It makes everything so low maintenance.

Such a good tutorial. Thanks! I've learned a lot in this 20 min. I'm a beginner but I love fishing in small streams and rivers. Switching from spin to fly felt a bit overwhelming. Would this method work in March and April? If gods willing I'll be fishing in Cornwall and Wales this spring :)
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
It'll definitely work then yes! You might find that as the fish start o look to the surface for food that A) you won't need to be as hard on the river bed as this and B) you've got a chance in the dry fly, so maybe use the duo method instead?

@@IBandAndyFishing I’m pretty sure. Very fishy takes. Tap tap and then the indicator goes under. At first I thought I was dragging bottom but point fly came up weed free. Most ‘bites’ came when I fished up shallow about 18 inches below the indicator (fishing in 4ft of water).
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing 3 жыл бұрын
How strange, I don't think it's possible to miss too many takes using this method because you know that at the point of the indicator going down that a fish has hold of the fly! I'm not sure what to advise here! Are there a lot of very small fish in the water?
@BobsBitsOutdoors
@BobsBitsOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
@@IBandAndyFishing that’s my suspicion, small fish harassing/grabbing the fly and running. Back in the autumn on the same venue when the water was clear, you could see small perch attacking. I am doubting my abilities at the moment as I’ve had a few blanks in a row. I do think my 3wt rod’s a little short for nymphing being only 6ft. Maybe I’m just not picking up enough line when striking. I’m starting to think I’ve set myself a challenge and a half.

I feel reassured the idea of a 9ft 2wt isn't completely mad! I've recently come to the same conclusion, that for the small, brushy streams near me it would be the ideal nymphing rod, basically for all the reasons you mention, but I've been struggling to find any available in the UK.
