Here is a short tutorial on how to tie dye a yin yang design. This design is a bit challenging for an absolute beginner but fairly easy to do. Good luck & happy tie-dying!
*I made another video to explain how to dye this tie since I have been asked so many times- enjoy! • How To Dye A Yin Yang ...
Please check out my website for my tie dye and handmade clothing~ jtribecreations.com/
IF you make tie dye for profit and use my tutorial, please give me a shout out for inspiration in your listing. You can also show your appreciation with a donation! paypal.me/jtribecreations
To answer the most common asked questions- I am using Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes not "paints", the presoak is done with soda ash.

I used to do tie dye with my sister all the time. When she passed I hadn't dyed anything for about 5 years. But I still had the kit I used with her so I've been doing some shirts because I thought it would be an awesome way to celebrate her memory

Thanks! It is just upholstery thread on sewing needle then go in & out of the fabric following the line you drew. It's commonly referred to as a basting stitch. I hope that helps!

I'd suggest doing the design offset to the side instead of directly in the middle. Imagine that top line as the being just around the rib area. I think that would distribute the design better across the dress (unless it's a short dress). Good luck!

It's flat artificial sinew. It's has a slightly waxy feel to it so it doesn't soak up dye like twine or cord would. You can find it at most places that sell dye online and some craft stores (usually around leather goods). It's better to me than rubber bands when you need really precise lines.

You can either alternate your colors on top and bottom OR dye top part one color & bottom another. Example- one side red & the other yellow will give you a just a bit of orange where the two colors met in the middle.

Chloe, You never know what you can do until you try and that goes for more than just tie-dye, anything. So please never say you can't do something until you have attempted it. Don't set limitations on yourself- this world will try hard enough to do that for you. Never "trying" can make you miss out on too much in life. :) Go be awesome.

LOL, I will see what I can do for you if I can find time...and socks. I don't really sell socks so I have not done any in a long while. But as an suggestion I would recommend doing an accordion fold on tube socks, try alternating colors on the opposite side when you dye for a cool effect too. :)
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 11 жыл бұрын
That really depends on the fold, on this particular one it's not that important. On very detailed tie dyes I like it dry but say for tight accordion folds I like it to be a bit damp. But you will always seem to get tighter folds when fabric is wet since it clings to itself better then.
@lilgamoma

I pre treat the cotton with Soda Ash to bring the ph level of the fabric up. This helps the dyes bond to the fiber instead of just "sitting" on it (which is most common reason for fading). It's available from where you buy your dyes from, or you can use PH+ for pools. Around 1 cup per gallon of water. The longer the soak the better, but at least 20-30 minutes.The ph level of your soak can vary by your water too (soft or hard water) so use a ph test kit when in doubt for 10 or higher. Good luck!

As long as your ties are tight enough the other colors should not bleed into each other. If it is a concern you can always use colors that compliment or blend (ex- blue & red touching will make a purple) or use a dark color like black to define your lines.
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 11 жыл бұрын
Sure you can, just leave one side & opposite center circle white then dye the rest black only.

I'd love to be of help but I'm not really certain what you are asking? You would need to use dyes intended for dying cotton fabrics as other dyes would fade out after washing. There are people that use natural dyes- but I do not since the mordants to fix the colors are usually toxic. If you are concerned about cost for dyes- you can find inexpensive "kits" at most craft & fabric stores.

I usually soak at least 30 minutes, but I have left shirts soaking for a couple of days before. As for the dye- I prefer 24 hours but at least around 8-12 hrs if at high temp (80 degrees or higher). If it's cold I'll leave them batching for 2-3 days. That gives bright colors. Hope that helps.

its very nice how much color use to dyeing one kg cotton and this is fix dyeing
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 11 жыл бұрын
I may consider that the next time I tie one of these up. Basically you choose your colors- lets say Example-one side red & one black. The center tie (longest tie) that actually divides the 2 halves separates the color line. Dye one side red & the small circle/eye of yin yang design black. Then alternate the colors on opposite side, dye large part black & the small circle red. I hope that helps explain it some for you, good luck with your tie dye.

I use oral pet syringes & droppers to apply my dyes. But you could use bottles. I would not suggest dipping as you cannot control the overdye well like that. I have been getting many questions on how to dye this tie though & plan on making a video on that soon. ;)

Make sure your ties are very tight and apply your dye slowly. If you are very concerned with bleeding over into another area- use smaller dye applicators like (oral) syringes or even eye droppers. The twine I use is artificial sinew- which is a bit waxy- so dye doesn't soak into it. HTH!

Secondly I have a quick question, I'm wanting to start making and selling tie dye at my local markets and was just wondering if you buy your dye and shirts in bulk and if you know of anywhere online that sells them decently cheap? I'm a highschool student and a beginner so i don't have much money to start out with. Thanks so much in advance :)

I usually mix my dyes in big jars and pour out what I need into little containers (for better control). You should store them somewhere cool or in your frig. I have a plug up cooler I use when I do have access, but I dye a lot at one time. Dye losses potency over time so try to use it up within 2 weeks or only mix what you need.
