He dyed the first side, about half the shirt is getting dyed soaked. He flips it over, dyes the second side, and almost all the shirt has dye. He then lightly poured out black on top of the second side, and the black dye penetrated wherever it could. The black can’t really push out the colors that are already bonding.

What’s the main difference in effect of using liquid dye vs powder dye. And does Rit dye work?
@CasualCollisions5 жыл бұрын
Rit dye doesn't bond to the fabric as well as fiber reactive dye - so, it will fade quickly. Liquid dye blends with nearby liquid dye while ice dye breaks apart into it's component dye colors.

Have you ever done a Crystal Wash process? I've looked all over for a video, but the only written directions I've found are to do a scrunch with a dampened but not soda soaked shirt,: either crumple into a jar or other tight container or tightly rubber banded. Allow liquid dye onto the shirt, let dyes mingle then pour warm Soda Ash water to stop the mingling action. Let batch for at least one hour. Paula Birch suggests using colors you normally wouldn't use with tie dye because the colors do not merge; they overlap. I found the directions on the Dharma site, Paula Birch's, and Judy TieDye's site, but I can't make it work. All three of those call it Low Water Immersion Process, but my attempts just look blochy. I got close, but I found that I had been adding too warm soda ash. Something has to be missing. I've seen some people get great effects with it but I can't get there. Would you consider a try?
@CasualCollisions4 жыл бұрын
I've made a note to give this a try. If I can get it done within the next couple of weeks, I'll try to post it soon. If I can't get it done within that time, it will be 6+ months before I'll have a chance.

I use deionized water from a water filtration system - so, it's room temperature. I know many people use warm water from the tap; however, the chlorine/chloramine used in the water treatment facilities will effect the dyes performance/longevity. That's why I use deionized water. (The deionized water line from the filtration system also feeds our ice maker so the ice is chlorine/chloramine free as well.) You could use distilled water or the water from most consumer available faucet-mount/pitcher-style water filters for a similar result.

I'm in luck, cause here in the Netherlands our tap water is completely chlorine free (as one of the few countries in the world apparently), but of course when it comes to water we know our stuff. @CasualCollisions4 жыл бұрын
I wash in cold water in the sink until the unbonded dye is out and then wash it in a warm wash cycle with an extra rinse in the washing machine. Fading is usually due to one or more of the following: Not soaking the material in soda ash or not soaking long enough. The shirt not being 100% cotton. Not allowing the dye to sit for 24 hours after application. The air temperature being too low while the dye is sitting in the material.

1) Use fiber reactive dyes - such as procion. They chemically bond with natural fabric and do not "wash out". 2) You *must* soak the fabric in a soda ash solution for at least 20 minutes prior to dyeing the fabric. 3) Do NOT wash out the soda ash solution before dying the fabric. 4) Fiber reactive dyes will ONLY bond to natural fabrics. If you use a man-made fabric or mixed fabric, the majority/all of the dye will wash out. 5) You must let the dye "batch" for at least 18-24 hours in a warm location (without the fabric drying out) after it's dyed -- before washing out the fabric. :: My sons have many shirts that were made years ago, that have been wash well over 100 times, and the majority of the dye is still bonded to the fabric.

The black dye bonds to the fabric the same as the other dye colors. While it will fade over time - the same as all the other colors - it takes *dozens* of wash cycles before I typically notice any fading. For example, there are a couple of shirts that my son wears every week and it was about 9 months before they began to show visible fading.

Casual Collisions do you cover it in plastic while it is sitting for that 16-24 hours or just leave it sitting on the rack?
@CasualCollisions5 жыл бұрын
I cover *maybe* 1-2 shirts a year. And, that's only if I'm going to heat it up to 125+ to rush the dye process. Otherwise, I just leave it on the rack, in the bowl, etc.

Soda ash what's that and i seen some kits that dont say that and why soak in it and where do you find it
@CasualCollisions6 жыл бұрын
Soda ash is sodium carbonate and is required for use with Procion Fiber Reactive dyes as that is what allows the dye to bond properly with the fabric. You can find it in the laundry isle of most grocery stores or in 50 pound pails at pool supply stores.
@jeremysimoneau33876 жыл бұрын
you can also use Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) with the same result....it has to do with raising the PH of the fabric

What's the color name u have used?
@Zonniebonnie5 жыл бұрын
Do you know how it’ll come out before u open it up?
@CasualCollisions5 жыл бұрын
I have a pretty good idea of what it *should* look like based on experience; but, the actual results do vary - especially when ice-dyeing.

I still don’t understand the purpose of coloring the sections w a marker first? Can anyone tell me?
@CasualCollisions5 жыл бұрын
If you're only making a single shirt, you probably don't need to mark the sections. But, I make a batch of different shirts at the same time, so I mark the sections with a reference color so I can remember how it needs to be dyed.

What does the thicken black do different than regular?
@CasualCollisions6 жыл бұрын
Dye that has been thickened doesn't flow as far/deep as un-thickened dyes. So, if you apply a thickened dye on top of another dye, it will only bond to the areas where you actually apply it, allowing for greater control and/or for you to add more well-defined lines of specific colors to your design.

@@CasualCollisions How do you make a dye "thicker"?

Wonder how the back turned out !!
@CasualCollisions6 жыл бұрын
The same as the front. Almost all of my designs will result in the same pattern on both the front and back of the shirt and I only photograph/display the back of the shirt if the design is different.

I plan to do at least one more double spiral video within the next few weeks. I'll try to explain it more fully with those.

Does it matter where you place the rubber bands?
@CasualCollisions6 жыл бұрын
The majority of the rubber bands are just used to keep the fabric in a tight ball; so, they can be placed anywhere you need to keep everything tight. However, three of the rubber bands for each spiral are used to keep track of where the dye needs to be placed.
