I don't what it is about this time of year I always want to break out my tie dye supplies and do a couple of shirts. I have done ice dying which gives more of a water color effect, but still cool. Tie dye is always in if you ask me.

He dyed the first side, about half the shirt is getting dyed soaked. He flips it over, dyes the second side, and almost all the shirt has dye. He then lightly poured out black on top of the second side, and the black dye penetrated wherever it could. The black can’t really push out the colors that are already bonding.

I have the same feeling/thought at times. "There's *no* chance this shirt will come out and I'm going to need to re-record the whole process" and then I'm shocked during the washout. This was especially true with a design I made last week that will be published as "Hyper V" sometime during the next 2-4 weeks. I thought it was a total loss and once I washed it out it's my new favorite design.

How did you decide where the color should be placed?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, at the beginning, you just make an educated guess as to where each color should be placed to give the most pleasing result. You develop a better sense of where everything should go over time; but, there's still some surprise if it's a new design that can lead to unexpected results.

I use guar gum; however, most dyers use sodium alginate. (Guar gum is readily available in the canning section of most grocery stores.) It's about 1/8 tsp for 8oz of liquid - depending on what you want the consistency to be.

The black is added to the "back" only. I use guar gum to thicken the dye; but, most people use sodium alginate. Depending on the consistency I'm trying to achieve, I use anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 tsp per 8 ounces of water.

What’s the main difference in effect of using liquid dye vs powder dye. And does Rit dye work?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
Rit dye doesn't bond to the fabric as well as fiber reactive dye - so, it will fade quickly. Liquid dye blends with nearby liquid dye while ice dye breaks apart into it's component dye colors.

Have you ever done a Crystal Wash process? I've looked all over for a video, but the only written directions I've found are to do a scrunch with a dampened but not soda soaked shirt,: either crumple into a jar or other tight container or tightly rubber banded. Allow liquid dye onto the shirt, let dyes mingle then pour warm Soda Ash water to stop the mingling action. Let batch for at least one hour. Paula Birch suggests using colors you normally wouldn't use with tie dye because the colors do not merge; they overlap. I found the directions on the Dharma site, Paula Birch's, and Judy TieDye's site, but I can't make it work. All three of those call it Low Water Immersion Process, but my attempts just look blochy. I got close, but I found that I had been adding too warm soda ash. Something has to be missing. I've seen some people get great effects with it but I can't get there. Would you consider a try?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I've made a note to give this a try. If I can get it done within the next couple of weeks, I'll try to post it soon. If I can't get it done within that time, it will be 6+ months before I'll have a chance.

I use deionized water from a water filtration system - so, it's room temperature. I know many people use warm water from the tap; however, the chlorine/chloramine used in the water treatment facilities will effect the dyes performance/longevity. That's why I use deionized water. (The deionized water line from the filtration system also feeds our ice maker so the ice is chlorine/chloramine free as well.) You could use distilled water or the water from most consumer available faucet-mount/pitcher-style water filters for a similar result.

@@CasualCollisions Interesting. I'm in luck, cause here in the Netherlands our tap water is completely chlorine free (as one of the few countries in the world apparently), but of course when it comes to water we know our stuff. @CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I wash in cold water in the sink until the unbonded dye is out and then wash it in a warm wash cycle with an extra rinse in the washing machine. Fading is usually due to one or more of the following: Not soaking the material in soda ash or not soaking long enough. The shirt not being 100% cotton. Not allowing the dye to sit for 24 hours after application. The air temperature being too low while the dye is sitting in the material.

After rinsing the dyes out in the sink, I run it through a standard wash cycle (with an extra rinse) in the washing machine, then to the dryer. I've never had a shirt bleed after that; but, I'd recommend that you test your own shirts after a single wash cycle to be sure they don't bleed before throwing them in with your regular laundry.

1) Use fiber reactive dyes - such as procion. They chemically bond with natural fabric and do not "wash out". 2) You *must* soak the fabric in a soda ash solution for at least 20 minutes prior to dyeing the fabric. 3) Do NOT wash out the soda ash solution before dying the fabric. 4) Fiber reactive dyes will ONLY bond to natural fabrics. If you use a man-made fabric or mixed fabric, the majority/all of the dye will wash out. 5) You must let the dye "batch" for at least 18-24 hours in a warm location (without the fabric drying out) after it's dyed -- before washing out the fabric. :: My sons have many shirts that were made years ago, that have been wash well over 100 times, and the majority of the dye is still bonded to the fabric.

How do you stop the black from fading/washing out?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
The black dye bonds to the fabric the same as the other dye colors. While it will fade over time - the same as all the other colors - it takes *dozens* of wash cycles before I typically notice any fading. For example, there are a couple of shirts that my son wears every week and it was about 9 months before they began to show visible fading.

You can make soda ash (calcium carbonate) by baking baking soda (calcium bicarbonate) in a 400F oven for about an hour. You'll notice a distinct texture change when it's complete. Soda ash is also known as "washing soda".

How do you make the thicken black for this
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I thicken with guar gum; but, most dyers use sodium alginate. Guar gum is available in most grocery stores in the canning aisle; or, you can find both options on Amazon at: Guar Gum: amzn.to/2UiOS4d Sodium Alginate: amzn.to/2YmIhHt I start with about 1/4 tsp to 8-16oz of water, stir vigorously, and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Check to see if the consistency matches what you're looking for and add additional guar gum if you need it to be thicker. Once it's the consistency you're looking for, add the powdered dye and shake vigorously before use.

Wash the shirt to remove any sizing, soak the shirt in a 1 cup:1 gallon soda ash solution, use fiber reactive dyes (such as Procion MX), let the dye sit on the shirt for at least 18-24 hours without drying out, and rinse out with both cold and hot water.

can i add soda ash in mixed dye?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can add soda ash to the liquid dye that you mix from powder; but, it will cause the dye to "age" rapidly and it will only be usable for 1-2 hours *maximum* before it will no longer bond to fabric.

Do you use urea when you mix your dyes?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
It depends... In the Summer - almost always. In the Spring/Fall - no. And, in the Winter - yes, if I plan to use a heater to keep it warm while batching. Basically, if I think the material will dry out before the batch (16-24 hours) is finished, I'll add urea to the liquid dye. If it's not likely to dry out, I don't worry about adding the urea.

I cover *maybe* 1-2 shirts a year. And, that's only if I'm going to heat it up to 125+ to rush the dye process. Otherwise, I just leave it on the rack, in the bowl, etc.

@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
Soda ash is sodium carbonate and is required for use with Procion Fiber Reactive dyes as that is what allows the dye to bond properly with the fabric. You can find it in the laundry isle of most grocery stores or in 50 pound pails at pool supply stores.

If you're only making a single shirt, you probably don't need to mark the sections. But, I make a batch of different shirts at the same time, so I mark the sections with a reference color so I can remember how it needs to be dyed.

What does the thicken black do different than regular?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
Dye that has been thickened doesn't flow as far/deep as un-thickened dyes. So, if you apply a thickened dye on top of another dye, it will only bond to the areas where you actually apply it, allowing for greater control and/or for you to add more well-defined lines of specific colors to your design.

Does it matter where you place the rubber bands?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
The majority of the rubber bands are just used to keep the fabric in a tight ball; so, they can be placed anywhere you need to keep everything tight. However, three of the rubber bands for each spiral are used to keep track of where the dye needs to be placed.
