How to tie Trilene knot and Improved Trilene knot

The Trilene knot is strong, anti-slip and easy to tie for most multi-purpose uses. Popular for terminal tackles such as hooks, lures, swivels, clips and weights.
The Fat Elf shows you how to tie the Trilene knot and Improved Trilene knot using mono lines.
Steps for Trilene knot:
1. Pass line through eye of the hook.
2. Pull back tag line to 6 inches and pass tag end through eye of the hook (same side) to form double loop.
3. Wrap tag end 5 turns around standing line.
4. Pass tag end through the double loop.
5. Pull the main line slowly and ensure wraps don’t overlap.
6. Moisten and tighten the knot steadily.
7. Trim the tag end.
Steps for Improved Trilene knot:
1. Pass line through eye of the hook.
2. Pull back tag line to 6 inches and pass tag end through eye of the hook (same side) to form double loop.
3. Wrap tag end 6 turns around standing line.

5. Return tag end through the bigger loop.
6. Pull the main line slowly and ensure wraps don’t overlap.

I like improved because it won't slip easily and you can tighten it on the line instead of the lure or hook eye leaving a loop that allows the lure to wiggle more freely. It will cinch down on a bite or if snagged

That’s a good idea screwing that shackle down on the bench so you can put maximum pressure on the knot . I used a 8 penny common galvanized nail , drove it two thirds into the bench where there was a 2 by 4 brace . Trilene , Palomar, Surgeons, and Snell knots need pressure put on them to make sure they are seated properly.

just fyi folks..the improved version is not necessary. i've practiced the regular trilene knot with all types of line including braid and when tied correctly it has zero slippage under heavy tension. it's a beast and the main line will break before the knot does.

.... Depending on the lb test size, mono or flouro, (doesn't work with limp braid) when fishing plastics like a Texas rig worm, lizard, fluke, etc, the Improved knot with a short piece of the line pointing forward, once you pull the knot and small tag end (point) through the head of the lure, it can act a a keeper to help keep the lure's head from slipping back as the tag end sticks in the lures head. - Works great when fishing weedless and weightless. - Yes, of course you can use super glue instead of the improved knot..... or use both.

What would make one choose the improved knot over the regular. I've always used the improved but i don't really know why!

Non-improved Trilene is more weedless since the tag end points away. Also Trilene knot is a 100% knot. No need to improve.

In never had any of those knots fail and I’ve used them all in salt water fishing around bridges and bridge pilings and stanchions where big fish hang out at night or day . Stripers ,Tog , Sheepshead , Conger eels .

You can use water, saliva or like a lot of fly fishermen, Chap Stick. With Chap Stick, you don’t have to put that nasty line in your mouth. Remember if you won’t drink the water that you are fishing in, than why would you think that putting your fingers or line near your mouth would be okay.
