i found my holy grail in removing brass on brown hair, i use manic panic dye!! color correcting. its cheap and amazing. use turquoise or a greenish blue for orangy red hair. mix a drop of the color into a white conditioner. very safe for hair and non damaging. its just conditioner with some color. mix it up and leave for 15 20 mins. the brass is all gone

ellebangs I have a red balayage that has faded from a rich red (redken merlot) to a copper red color. On the website I found the tone correcting and tone enhancing shampoos. My question is: if I use the tone enhancer and don't like it, can I then switch to the tone correcting at that point? I might buy both but I wanted to see first if using one could potentially interact with the other. tia!

The soft red neutralizer did absolute wonders for my hair, the trick is to get your hair damp and leave it on for like 25 mins rinse it and then deep condition, I have been trying to get the awful brassy red tones out of my hair for years and I honestly can’t believe this is the only thing that actually did something

It works!! I used the one for light brunettes, my hair was actually more brassy orangish then red. But I wasn’t looking for anything that would make it darker or blonde! I just wanted the ashy light brown, this did the trick. I suggest leaving it in for longer then 3 minutes. I waited in the bath tub for 6 minutes and took it out because of my lack of patience

Thanks so much for this tip. I've used this toning toning shampoo for several weeks now, and indeed it works great. What I don't like is that I can't quickly wash my hair anymore, it instantly takes the effect away. Also, I leave it in for about an hour before I rinse it out so to get the desired results. And I have to use it once or twice per week in order for the effect to remain. This might have to do with that I wet my hair everyday in the shower, although I just wash my hair once per week. I guess if I wouldn't rinse my hair on a daily basis with water, it would last longer. Nevertheless it's a bit of a hassle. Is there anything more permanent, that I would have to use-for example-once per month?

@ellebangs first off, let me tell you how informative and descriptive your videos are. You really take the time out to explain in great detail about your topic and I feel that you do so in a way so you can completely connect to each viewer on an individual level instead of on a whole; every person is different. I did have a question though in regards to the eSalon brass banisher. I'm currently in the process of growing my hair out and I have a couple of inches of roots and approximately 18 inches of this beautiful honey color. When choosing the correct shade for the banisher, do i go for light brown shade? It's really closest to that and I don't want it to match my roots. Just want to tone the color i have. Thanks 😘

I used this product 1x for 3 minutes and couldn't comb through my hair afterwards! It fried my hair! I was pretty fired up. It did mellow out the red a teeny bit and blend my roots to my ends a little better but it sure dried and damaged my hair in the process. I'll have to get a very good deep conditioning treatment. I am okay with the color correction but not okay with the damage.

Question for all the hairstylists out there.. I recently got Carmel/ golden light brown highlights on my dark hair. My natural hair color is dark ash brown.. my stylist warmed up my base color to a medium warm brown. She did a great job, but the color doesn’t suit me and I’d like to go back to my natural dark ash brown hair. I went to Sally’s and they told me I wouldn’t be able to go back to a cool toned brown from warm because it would turn green.. my question is.. is there any possible way to go back to dark ash brown from the warm colors I have in my hair now? Any suggestions are appreciated ❤️

I had natural streaks of blonde and copper in my hair when I was younger but my hair grew ashier and ashier over the years and now I feel it makes me look drab and washed out. I want to bring that flattering warm glow back. Thoughts?

I have a question . . . my natural hair color is jet black. I went a blonde about 3yrs back, but it was a tedious journey ( I did go to a "professional" at a salon; I wouldn't dare use bleach on myself. Espescially with locs). Mainly because when bleach is applied to my hair, it typically lifts really fast (though that was not the case this last time), it hits this brassy orangeish color, then just stops lifting. Long story short, I was trying to achieve a ash blonde, but my hair still kept coming out with these red-undertoned blondes. So in the end, I end up going to a different stylist who put a green toner in the bleach or the color he applied to cancel out the orange/ red tones in my hair & it got most of it out. I can actually see the green tones in the blonde now ever so slightly, but I guess I notice it because I know it's there & I know what to look for. But it's not a problem for me aesthetically cuz only a trained eye would really be able to tell, & it's most noticeable when it's wet, which is rarely around other people. Anyway . . . my question is, if I decide to go back to my natural color one day, as opposed to letting the blonde grow out or cutting it out, would I have to add a red toner to the black dye---since, as you know, would cancel out the green--- so that way I wouldn't have black hair with green undertones?? Or would just getting a shade of black dye that naturally has red as its base be enough? OR would getting a NATURAL black dye color which has neutral undertones be fine?? OR (and I promise this is my last "or") does it even matter what shade of black I use?? I ask all of these "what if" scenarios because about two years before I went blonde, I had a few pieces of my hair highlighted red (again, by a "professional" & the intended color was plum, but I digress) & she had to light my hair blonde before she deposited the "plum" color on my hair. I got tired of it after a few months & decided I could dye it back black myself since I figured how could anyone screw up with black?? Plus, I didn't know that much about undertones at that time, & assumed black would cover any color, no matter how bold. So I applied about 2 tubes of black dye to my whole head, & everything seemed to be alright, 'til about the second time I washed it, then the red started peaking though, but not as boldly as it did when I first had it done. So I look back & try to figure out what kind of black (undertone-wise) I should've used to cancel out that red. I think I used "jet black" by ION, & if I'm not mistaken, jet black has blue undertones.

Hey Elle, thanks so much for this video! So helpful! I was wondering if you could do a video on how heat styling can thin your hair out. Also can you start to bald if you heat style your hair everyday?? Thanks Elle!

I have a level 6-7 base (very warm/brassy toned) right now that I'm looking to paint balayage myself onto. I'd like to keep the darker roots but want to tone them first like you note in the video. Could I tone with this shampoo and then paint the bleach streaks on top to the sections that I want to lighten?

Hi, I have really dark brown hair (practically black, i'm Indian by nationality) and I got a balayage done with caramel highlights but the problem is my hair ended up turning slightly red. My stylist said that the bleach got the red out, but even after getting toned twice at the salon the caramel is more red then caramel. I was just wondering if toning shampoo will help it (my hairstylist wouldn't give me an answer when i asked about toning shampoos). And I'm not sure whether I would need a red neutralizing shampoo or a brown color one. Thank you for your help :)

While I am not a Facebook person, I do have a question for you. I have a lot of gray hair and I like to color my own hair at home. I use either 5G or 6 1/2G L'Oreal. When I want to add streaks I bleach it, wait till it turns golden and rinse. But what toner number would I use to get carmel-colored streaks say at Sally's Beauty or other site? Thank you for your help.

I bought luxy hair extensions in mocha brown and turns out my natural dark hair is ashier than the extensions. I love my ashy/cool natural hair color and don't want to change my hair to match my extensions. I'd rather change my extensions to be cooler toned. How can I do that or what can I use without damaging the extensions?
