Last year, I tracked every single thing I did for all 8760 hours that are in one year. I was running multiple companies, working on multiple KZbin channels, and feeling completely overwhelmed. So I was trying to figure out how to reduce stress and not burn-out. What I learned after tracking every single minute of the year changed everything for me.
So I wanted to make a video showing you everything I learned and how you can implement the same thing if you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

• How to Track Time - BE...
Like most people, I was multitasking all the time. Jumping from one task to another task every few minutes. I started to read books on time management and how to reduce stress and be more productive.
I came across two books that really taught me everything I needed to know to fix these issues. First was High-Performance Habits and second, was The 7 habits of highly effective people.
The first lesson I learned was to stop multitasking and switch between tasks as few times as possible. This one took a while to learn.
The second lesson was to track your time, so you have a vague idea of how long things take. They recommended doing this for 3 days or a week, but I just kept going.
The third lesson was to pause for a couple of minutes between tasks and change your mindset. If you are going from work to home, pause, take a minute, and be in home mode. Shut off work mode. Or even during work, pause between email mode and meeting mode and be 100% focused on one task at a time.
I couldn’t figure out how to stop multitasking since it was a habit. So I decided to start tracking time. I first started with just work-related time and then it slowly grows to every single thing I was doing a few days later.
I always felt like I had no time. I was always out of time with work and always felt short of personal time. Time tracking made me realize I was wasting a lot of time.
Let me break down the hours in a year for you. You can adjust this based on your activities. This is based on what I tracked last year.
We all have 8760 hours in a year.

I am a teacher. I am super tired most of the time. I work FAR TOO MANY HOURS WORKING FOR FREE. This has got to stop. My goal is to spend more time with my husband and friends and more time doing my hobbies, woodworking with the CNC router (both Shark and Maverick), as well as mastering my brand new X-Tool. I'm gonna do like you said and take a week for learning how to personalize the app, then get more serious with it the following week.

Humans cannot multitask. Our brains don't work like that. If you think you're good at multitasking, you've just gotten good at flip-flopping between focal points. One thing at a time is still better.

It's essential to schedule your time. I have my system to do it. I prioritize my tasks in my job, sport, and rest because I can't cover everything. For example, I analyze what is more critical for me and jump there. I'm talking about this on my channel.

It's very important to track your time. Many individuals may not realize how much time they're investing when not tracking time. This can trickle down to those who bill per hour - you may be overbilling or underbilling clients.

Great video! Its interesting that you find that reducing transitions is best. I will try that but a big leap in productivity for me was increasing transitions by limiting how much time I will spend on the drudgery items. I can face the drudgery if its for ten minutes only, then I'll get it done. The mind seeks novelty because in the jungle novelty is the food source, the fruit or the animal, and this is why Instagram and KZbin Shorts are so popular. By switching to a different category of task every ten minutes my mind doesn't get burned out on one thing. I will try it your way and then my way and try to determine which is best. Thanks again!

I've tried logging my personal time before, but the experience was horrifying. While I respect those who do it, I personally found it to be an unhealthy habit that detracted from my attention and made me feel like my life was moving at full speed. Clicking a button every moment takes valuable snippets of your attention, and this alone can lessen your sense of time. Trust me, it's not a good feeling. I know what I'm saying because I've tried it. Instead, I recommend using an auto-tracking app on your PC. This is more than enough to keep track of your time without the negative side effects. I'm currently looking for the best app to provide this functionality.

How would you track or categorize the “transition” period from one task to another? For example, going to the gym. I drive up to the gym and it takes me 5 min to get out, get situated, and start working out - how should I categorize that? Should I turn on “Gym” tracking task immediately as soon as I pull into the parking lot and park? If not, then how do I transition the time from my car to get started with my first workout after getting situated. I don’t want to say that I worked out for 2 hours when in fact at least 30 min was taken up by going to the locker room putting my stuff us, hand washing, etc… Same when I get home from my drive from the gym and into my apartment. Or I get home and stopped at my apartment leasing office to check the mail. Where or How should I log my time? I log my “drive time” but once I get to my destination and trying to get into the house and get situated takes a few minutes to put my things down, etc…Should I just put everything into the “break” or what? Any tips or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Hello What you can use is to directly cover the habit so when you start you are really ready to exercise then you start in the time Traker, in the case that you have to do previous tasks before like driving, putting on your clothes you can cover it in a group called for example Time preparation and so you will not be generating micro tasks that in the end will take you a lot of work to register all of them.

I would just call this time "Travel" with a tag/subtask of the method so car/bus/walk etc. Or "Transition" as he describes here. So it means on ATracker it shows that I was getting somewhere in that time and still "busy". I would change the task to "travel" when in the car before starting engine, "gym" at the point you started working out or put your phone in the locker, and back to "travel" (or transition) when you get it again after coming out. The getting changed is all part of the transition as the video says, so not a real big deal if tracked as part of the travel/prep. Important not to get bogged down overthinking, it's all productive time. On this app, I can also add drop down text and/or numeric tags, so I would then have the Gym task, and then a drop down text for "Swim" "Run" "Weights" etc. Then a numerical tag on each of those: lengths/distance for swim, km/miles for run, kg or repeats for weights etc. So the graph would show the time I was at the gym, plus info in statistics for how much of each activity was actually achieved, important if you wanted to track all those things. Overall, I think it's important to remember what your purpose was in tracking. If you were wondering where all your time has gone, then noting the transitions is important but not in intense detail, they just use time. However, if you are, say, in a dispute at work when they are saying you don't do enough and you are doing lots of little things that don't get noticed but they would struggle without - then you need to tag each of those tasks so they are all added up in the stats. Even if took less than a minute. I have ADHD and am struggling to stay on task, so perfectionism works for me here, as I don't want to switch the task every couple of minutes. It's a subtle peer pressure that works. But I also wanted to show others why I seem to get less done in the time spent on one task compared to them, because I have preschoolers around all the time and they don't, so tracked the constant interruptions during other tasks. I wrote a short mission statement on what I was trying to achieve/discover in this, so when not sure how to track something, go back to that and see how it aligns with that. Stops me being petty about it: such as NOT specifically logging spending 2 minutes, twice a day, every day picking up someone else's socks to wash them..... It does add up to 28minutes of my week, but is not conducive to my aims - nor the relationship.... that's just a love investment 🤣 Hope that helps. Good luck!

You may want to follow me on tiktok where videos are 30 seconds. KZbin doesn’t like short videos and since this video has 99% thumbs up, I’m assuming most people on KZbin like a full deep dive. Humanity is doomed only because people’s attention span is 30 seconds and they get upset when someone does a deep dive tutorial
