I did basically the same but on a much longer span of time bc I've been addicted for almost a decade, so I preferred a softer approach. I think endlessly scrolling isn't the problem, it's a symptom of a deeper issue. Understanding why we do it is a good approach. Are you full of negative thoughts? Is it uncomfortable to sit in silence without any external stimulation? Try doing it. Yes, it sucks at first, but with practice, you realize it isn't that bad and you can control your thoughts and emotions, it's helped me immensely honestly

honestly 1hr screen time is hard when we use our phones for navigation, as calculators, alarms, cameras etc. i feel like once you get control over your screen time (like you did) it’s easier to navigate the screen time and knowing what’s “ok” to have used up 30 mins of screen time that day. (for example, i love listening to music and often have 30ish mins of screen time a day from spotify being open, changing albums and browsing for a new playlist, etc

The digital wellbeing thingy on my phone breaks down what kinds of apps I'm using. Also, every week it shows me the three apps I use the most. I'm not sure I could just go down to an hour a day, at least not long term.

Nice challenge! Instead of just focusing on how much time we spend on our phones, we should also think *about what we do with it*. For example, if you have a long-distance friendship, it's hard to mantain it without videochatting every now and then! And a videochat can easily add an hour or two to your screentime. But is that bad? No. An hour of screentime spent talking with a friend is *far more valuable* than 30 minutes of brainless scrolling. So.. are we spending too much time on the wrong things and not enough on the right things? That's the question we should ask ourselves :) I'd like to see the same challenge with computer screentime! That would be interesting ⭐🙌

It's hard to avoid screens, I do so many mandatory things on my phone, like pay bills, order groceries and buy everyday items, order medicine, search for important information and almost everything that has something to do with my health is also online. In Finland digitalisation is really prevalent. It's hard to do anything irl anymore. Can't for example just walk into a bank to take care of stuff, it's all online. Even most phone services for everyday things have been either ended, or they are very expensive or have very limited service hours and you probably have to wait a lot. Frankly it sucks. It's good to use tech to make lives easier, but it doesn't feel like a good idea to only depend on digital services.

one thing that helped me a lot was not measuring in hours but time wise, like the days i wake up at 4 am are more likely to have a higher screen time than the ones I wke up at 1pm, so I try to keep my screen time below 20% of my day. (so If i was awake for 16 hours that means 3h 20min which might seem high but its really not for that day, whereas a day that I was awake for only 10 hours it would be 2). I also don't really count some things towards it, like if im facetiming my friend its gonna make it higher but its not scrolling or anything harmful, same with music app, or maps)

And even just by doing THAT, I've been wanting to spend more time on stuff like studying! My Anki stats right now are off the charts! I don’t care what my total screen time is, I want to know specific activities/app screen time. Once you realize that your life has hollowed out and all you do is work and waste your time gaming and watching videos, you are compelled to do it more to avoid that unpleasant feeling. The phase of actually learning how to do new and fulfilling things will be hard, because you are not good at it. But it's the only thing that helps. Imagine this: If you couldn't use your PC, Phone, Tablet, TV or Laptop, what would be left of your Routine besides Necessities like sleep and work? If you can't find a good Answer, you have a problem. Acknowledging that is the first step. Take your time people, you can do it!

Most of my screentime is on KZbin and it is annoyingly full of ads now (I'm having like 4 ads for a 30 seconds video). It is basically telling me to cut my screentime

no literally,, why are there so many ads these days

Recently I started cutting down my screentime that was at average 8 hours a day (when low), now i only have it at 6 hours max BUT i wake up early and go to sleep early, and from 8am (when I wake up) to 9pm my screen time is max at 3 hours, then it depends but averaging the total ends up 5/6 hours by the time I go to bed, which I think is a good improvement

Pro-tip: Putting your phone on black and white mode helps people decrease their screen time as it's less stimulating to the brain! (You can add a accessibility shortcut to make it easy to switch between settings)

This is true! I have a back tap shortcut to make my phone grayscale and it works wonders

2:29 if you had failed to stay below your goal, you would not have lost all your progress. Someone who shoots 4 baskets in a row, but misses the 5th doesn’t all of a sudden not know how to throw a basketball. We are human, we slip, we stumble, but we learn and retain what we’ve learned once it has been deliberate. You should note that I did something very similar to you, except I did it by doubling every week. First week I did 5 mins below screen time, next week 10, then 20, and so on. I am now up to 5 hours, but some days I get only 2.5 hrs, but that does not mean I have failed. Sometimes it is difficult and Ik it’s just my brain getting used to it and I just need to be deliberate and keep going.

that’s a really good point! a mistake doesn’t and shouldn’t invalidate your prior success

I’m on my phone 24 hours a day. The only time I’m not is when I’m looking at someone else’s phone over their shoulder on the subway.

People make videos about decreasing screen time but filming these vids is longer than what you actually spend on the phone.

Great video! Sorry, could you explain what you meant about the monitor point? Why does that mean you can't use your computer as a phone?

I started a new schedule last month and it’s been going decently but I’ve noticed I’ve reverted back to dependency on my phone. It’s sucks because I can actually tell the day slips away when all I’m doing is clicking and scrolling…
