This sport is just the beginning. Support each other on how we raise and train pack goats. Learning how to raise goats and how to train to be a pack goat is critical to how we coexist with them. Goats need kind, loving, comfort in their training. A key factor to successful pack goats is how they are trained.
At packgoats.com our mission is to become a leading resource on all things for owning your goats. In addition, help you feel confident about the information and be successful in caring for your goats.
Check out all our courses to teach you how to raise babies, run pack goats, and how to milk goats. Highly recommend you to get the courses that fit your needs.

My partner is a former wilderness guide and I’m an avid hiker who loves doing big summits, but I have serious back issues/chronic pain and just can’t handle the weight. I thought back country was impossible for me, which is a pity because we love hiking together. I found pack goats today and have been watching every video I can find. I think this might have just changed my life.

Same here! Just a newbie small homesteader with three little goats for milk and the boy for reproduction, and if one of them dies I suppose me. That would be the only way I could bring myself to eat them because I love them so much. But they are spoiled! I failed in training! I've never had this problem in my life my dogs in my past have always been so well trained and I've always dedicated the right amount of time and knew what to do. I definitely needed a lot of this concept to translate into training even for my little homestead just for better behavior and proper relationships. I have one that's human scared. She barely eats out of my hands. It's counterintuitive me for to assert myself over my animal force myself on them. But I can see that she needs to have the affectionate contact with me in order to respect me better. Please can anyone help me with this? I got her Young at A livestock auction. She clearly been through some trauma she was maybe about six or seven months? She's a little bit bigger now and definitely accepted by my pygmy herd but, she still won't let me touch her. She has an attachment to me of some kind. Cries when I leave. Gets around me and close to me but if I reach she jumps and runs. Can anyone help? How do I break into the skittish behavior? How do I get my young Alpine goat to let me love her? 🙏
@NumHeut
@NumHeut 28 күн бұрын
@@shibelight2095 give her time and don't reach for her when she comes near you. Feed her from your hands very often with very special treats (but of course not more than would be healthy for her). Pet all the other goats around her and let her watch. Sit calmly with your goats when they are calm. That is in the morning when they didn't get up yet, after they ate and in the late evening when it's dark and they go to sleep. Just stay with them and pet the ones who like it. Eventually sit downnext to the goat that is afraid (maybe in an enclisure that's only for her), but don'g reach for her. Don't touch her. Give her treats, maybe. After doing so for spme days point your finger to her nose and let her sniff. Then jzst take the finger away calmly. That is how I greet all my goats: Finger to nose, we touch, that's it. Who wants cuddles comes nearer. Who doesn't want cuddles can leave. After she knows this greeting and knows that she will not be cought, reached for or touched when greeting you, look for moments when she is really relaxed, digesting and even sleepy. (Parasympathicus, you know that feeling after you ate...maybe in the evening.) Then greet with your finger to the nose. If she isn't bothered at all, try to calmly touch and rub the place between the horns. Most goats love it since they can't scratch that place on their own. Look at her eyes, if she enyois it, make that a new ritual. Scrub her there whenever both of you are calmly together. Don't touch her besides that. Eventually this will break the ice and you wilk be able to touch her neck etc. If she shows you that she doesn't want to be touched or botheredn ALWAYS respect that. Only then will she trust you. It doesn't have to be trauma, it can be genetics. I have two sisters. One is the sweetest and most affectionate thing in the world. So is her son from last May, so is her son from this march. The other sister is a bit smarter and mistrusts everyone. (Not only humans, but goats, too.) She started to trust me a tiny little bit after she saw that her sister even left her baby with me to go grasing. Auntie looked at me with the little one and you could see the thoughts run through her head. 😂 She did let me help her give birth to her son, but didn't like me around for a long time. Now she accepts me. Her son was shy from day two. Right after his birth I could touch him, but the very next day he behaved just like her mother. 🤷‍♀️ I have four shy goats (out of ten...they were 13 before). Only the little son still mistrusts me. All the others lost their fear. :)

The goats sound like my kids. I instructed my hubby that in order to get them to functioning, just repeat the command 5 times in row: the first time they ignore it, the second they know what you're doing, the third they think they can endure it, the fourth they begin to feel stupid about being stubborn, the fifth time they WILL DO IT TO MAKE YOU STOP. 🤣🤣🤣❤

They have you trained. If you have to give a command 5 times, you are not the trainer. You are the trainee. DON’T give a command unless you can and will enforce it immediately.
@NumHeut
@NumHeut 11 күн бұрын
@@davidpeightal4918 nope, you can't treat some individuals like that. 5 times is to much, that's right. But there are dogs like Huskys or Salukis who are bred to think and decide on their own. They don't have the same will to please as let's say shepherds. Whatever you tell them is a suggestion and they have to think if they share your opinion. They will almost never react at the first attempt unless you tell them to do something they love. In all other cases you HAVE to give them the time and chance to decide that they themselves want to follow your suggestion. And be it only because they know you are coming to enforce it after the 3rd attempt. And still they sometimes will decide to discuss even after three times. You can't treat a Saluki or Afghan Hound the same way as a Bordercollie then. If you would do so, you would break their psyche and they would become aggressive. 1st is trust and relationship, 2nd ist education. Don't break the trust. NEVER.
@davidpeightal4918
@davidpeightal4918 11 күн бұрын
I have never trained a husky or Saluki. And I agree that trust is #1. I have trained dozens of hounds and raised a couple kids. They all fully trusted me, and the trust was mutual. Part of that trust was that they all knew I only gave a command once. If it went beyond that there were consequences. People and animals are happier when boundaries are well defined and rules are always the same. It builds trust and a sense of security and well being. I’ve never seen a canine that had to be told “no” twice by it’s alpha canine. They all learn to listen the first time, in my very limited experience. (Because they know if they don’t there are consequences).
@NumHeut
@NumHeut 11 күн бұрын
@@davidpeightal4918 well, then you haven't known iriental sighthounds. I have two of them and they are 10 and 8 years old. You can't tell exactly who is the "alpha", because there is no such thing here. The older one is the "alpha" when they are outside and have encounters with new people or dogs. He also is the alpha when the younger one annoys our kroatioan shepherd girl (who by the way turns on the heel when you call her and is very pleased to fullfill eacj of your wishes...she's very different from the Salukis). The older one also runs and brings back the younger one, when I tell him to do so and he scolds him whenever the younger one doesn't behave the way everybody knows we behave in this family. BUT whenever the older one pees somewhere, the younger ond runs there to pee over it. The younger one also has to get his food first and waits for it half a meter nearer to the kitchen than the older one, who totally accepts that. If they get into an arguement or even fight, the younger one always wins, because he is stronger and smarter. So who IS the alpga between them? It really depends on the Situation. And that's how it is with us humans, too. Whenever we are outside and in the humans world I am the alpha and they ask me how to behave. I tell them. Whenever it's about other dogs, they tend to decide for themselves and to not listen to my "suggestions". Whenever we are at home, they know they can discuss some things with me but they also know my special tone and look when there will be no discussion. Also we have one sound that ALWAYS works and that I use very rarely. It means "danger! Everybody comes here IMMEDIATELY and we RUN away!" This sound is me jodeling. 😂 Yes, just like in Switzerland or Marocco. ^^ This has to be taught to dogs like that, that are bred to hunt on their own, because they will NOT react to anything when they set off to hunt. So whenever we are in the woods and I see a deer or bunny or something, I jodel, turn around and just RUN AWAY. 😂 This prevents them from realizing there would be something to hunt, because they come after me before even realizin what happened. If they saw the deer, they would run after it and NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING in this world could stop them. That's why they are more often run over by cars than other dogs. 🤷‍♀️💔 It's just their nature, they are bred for doing things on their own. And you can't enforce a "stop and come back" with a running sighthound unless you never let them run freely. If they are free you can't put a long leash on them because you would break their neck or back. They set off at high speed and run 60km/h jzst smiling and NOT yousing their brain at all. 😂 No chance to enforce anything...just stand there and watch then run in circles. (You can look at this pn youtube. ^^)

Thank you for the presentation. Very informative. A word about bottle babies: I don't prefer them. The one we have, which we got when it was about a year old, is too needy. I was told goats are only tame and bond with owners who bottle feed. We easily proved that wrong. We have never bottle-fed, and our goats are tame and come to us. Several have also been trained for goat shows and do very well. We spend a lot of time with the goats, carrying them around when they are young and just hanging out with them. We've four kids born in the past three weeks, and I can easily pick them up; they don't run. I carry them around while I'm walking around the garden and give them to visitors to hold, so they get lots of attention. When I open the gate, they come to me. We've managed to tame every goat we got that was 'wild' - pasture raised with little to no human contact -- but one. Fritz is unique. She ran with fear like a deer in a shop. Now, she's good, but sometimes the wild streak returns. She is the hesitant one, the first to run with the hint of danger or contact. Yet, I can easily do her hooves and walk her on a lead. Goats are like people: each one has its own quirks. As far as size goes, we have Toggenburgs and four-foot fences easily kept them in. I thought the fence was high enough for the Nigerian dwarf we got two years ago. Wrong. The shorter the goat, the higher they jump. It's weird.

@@Meowface. hey Davie.. I’m again about to sell, not only him but all 4 of my goats. The training method is good, can’t deny, but the thing is, I can’t prevent them to “attack” donkeys. I’ve fenced electrical one really big part of the farm that goes a bit into the wood also, has 2 creek access points, but it held them only for few weeks. As soon as they mix up among donkeys things start to happen. Hitting a pregnant donkey in the belly or simmilar.. The goat is also overprotective when the dogs are near her so she out of nowhere hits the dog. Beautiful creatures and I learned a lot but unfortunately I can’t handle them anymore. I don’t know how much of a difference in character are dwarf goats from other breeds, but these small ones are really hyperactive. If they were grazing around the wood that surrounds the farm I would just let them be but they have the urge to go where donkeys are and then its a problem.

I enjoyed listening to the talk with my seven year old who loves goats more than horses (neighbor's bottle babies coming by definitely helped plant that seed). She flunked out of ballet, but camping and fishing are her jam, so might end up getting us a couple beginner friendly pack goats first thing when we settle on a new farm. It'll be about 1/2 mile to "hike" to some of the best fishing in the state, so it seems like a good training ground for little future campers. It's a good thing for me to listen to how goats differ from horses and mules before starting to look for goats, since I would F a goat up pretty quickly if I tried to train one like I would correct a horse's manners.

Had some cantankerous, 2nd goats, though their kids got treated well and where respectful. I have learn't alot from you already. Very interesting points and observations, water river crossing, leading, commands, squirt bottle, I am looking forward to having goats again and will hike trails with them for fishing and gold panning as well as milk & meat, they are a truly versatile animal.

Why goats haven't been used for packing much until recently is quite beyond me. They would have been amazing during the pioneer days for example!

I have found that goat kids who are fed goat milk on a lamb bar grow better than dam raised and bottle babies. They also stay very affectionate like a bottle kid. When they have free choice goat milk in the bucket they grow larger , faster and healthier

Goats were the first animal to help man build civilization on the mountainous rocky terrain of Ancient Greece (and/or nearby). Horses were too difficult, anxious, and often involved in power struggles; goats bond with humans in a special way, not to mention provide milk and cheese and skins for warmth...In California they are using goats to eat underbrush to prevent wildfires. These creatures are highly underestimated. Thrilled to see a goat renaissance in America!

This guy would be a great primary school teacher because children that age are almost the same as goats. A teacher is ALWAYS right. Unless a teacher IS actually wrong ... in which case he/she fucked up ... but if a teacher is not wrong .... they should always end up on top.

Incredible information! Thanks so much for all videos. We've been loving this. I love to hike and I'd like to do more long distance trips. I'm 48 and I have MS. I can walk long distances but carrying a heavy pack can be difficult. This kind of thing could really help a lot of folks enjoy long stays in the outdoors again

That's what I was thinking. My dad had a bad stroke so it wouldn't have helped him, but his stroke made me aware of the different levels of impact theseevents can have, and a lot of people can keep enjoying life with just a little well thought assistance: I think these goats would be just the ticket for a lot of families figuring out what the new normal is after a diagnosis.

Your goats look amazingly healthy! No side bloat. Our goats are not penned and free hike daily. They went from weak or fat or angry to happy, fit and strong!! And yes, goats believe they. Are made of sugar and will be melted to nothingness by water...

i never trained my toggenburgs. just raised them from kids. they work the trapline with me everyday. haul in the gear an out the fur. bottle feeding makes them so dependent on you they always want to be by your side. yeah they will wonder why im setting traps but the second they see me start moving they come running.

How do you get goats to cross streams in the back country if they think water is acid? Is it only when the water is coming out of the squirt bottle that it is uncomfortable for them or do they generally try to avoid it?

With dam raising (we have done it for 14 years), a biddable mom will produce biddable kids. A skittish mom will produce skittish kids. Over the years we have culled the skittish does from our herd, so we have a high percentage of biddable kids. It takes time though unless you purchase from a herd that has the same practice (and don’t buy the culls). The same goes for loud goats. Loud moms teach kids to be loud. Behavior is a huge culling factor for us. We like quiet, well behaved goats. If mom is bonded to the goat herd, the kids are bonded. She teaches them. Additionally if you offer a bottle to a newborn, you can both bottle and dam raise. Then you never have this stressful situation of having to change the kids’ manner of eating. Dairy herds that dam raise do this, so we can separate kids to milk test. It’s a good practice, because if something happens to mom, you can be left with orphans that don’t want a bottle and may never take it.
