The “big picture” part of this is very helpful for me. My puppy is 12 weeks old and I find myself having too high expectations, so I try and correct every little thing. This gives me confidence to just let him be a puppy and work on small things at a time. Love your videos sir.

I really appreciate the idea of establishing the desire to work with me before worrying about every little micro thing. It makes perfect sense not to worry about a few small undesirable behaviors until you get that macro behavior first.

This is abseloutely amazing and beautiful to watch and learn. You explained the bigger picture so well and it makes perfectly sence. I love the way your not bribing her to walk nice or follow commands with you. It's built with relationship and encouragment and love. I'm so glad i found your channel thank you for teaching us all about this.

Thank you for this video! We are late starters on this with our puppy. We thought teaching our dog to sit, lay down, shake, etc, was the main goal, however, we neglected to look at the big picture. Looking forward to watching more videos and learning how to properly train our pup. Thank you!

I feel like ive let my dog down by not engaging and just drilling. He will walk till he gets bored and then just abandons me and forgets I exist. Im so excited because I tried this and it actually worked and he was way more interested in me and was engaging and idk it made me feel better about myself because he felt better with me. Thanks!

I just came across this video and in just a couple of days my dog’s engagement is vastly improved!! I only wish this drill was included in your Perfect Puppy Course. I’ve been following your course sense day one of having our Olde English bulldog and he’s engagement has been extremely lacking until adding in this little drill. Now things are going well!

Great video. This idea of macro vs micro really clicks with me and seems very important to keep in mind. I love the simple yet game-changing tips like this. Like in another video from another channel he talks about teaching your puppy to focus. While it seems obvious and simple, it's not something I would have thought about, yet can make a world of difference.

Wow, holy crap. I got a puppy 2 weeks ago he's 16 weeks old. I am also in the Facebook group. He seemed miserable on walks. I couldn't get him to go two blocks, and then he'd turn and pull on the leash desperately trying to get home again. I got a 12 foot section of rope and tried this today and we walked 30 minutes down a logging trail road that hooks up to the street back home. This time he wanted to keep going! He's a German Shepherd mix. Maybe some kind of bull terrier too. Unknown. With GS dog he's going to have a lot of energy. Now I can **finally** take him on longer walks! I have been primarily following your courses. I trained four other dogs with the Monks of New Skete method. This is the first time I have had a reluctant puppy.

I've noticed in a couple of these videos the positive reinforcement you can provide when the puppy does what you want to follow you and look up to you with the change of directions. When I've tried this though, I have found its possible for the puppy to be stubborn and want to continue on its chosen direction or sometimes change direction, follow you and accept the praise, but then bolt ahead and pull into the changed direction. These videos are less clear on what to do it the puppy doesn't give you a behaviour to praise initially.

Whatever reward your using isn't motivating enough for pup, your reward needs to be better in pups eyes than the environment surrounding them. Try some higher quality rewards like chicken, sausage etc.

Its more of an engagement issue. I would recommend more games and more “vocal praising” rather than using food. In every walk and game they will learn to follow your lead

It's funny you mentioned the "puppy voice"...I found my dog always listened to my daughter spot on, and she talked in a higher pitched voice...so I tried it with my Mastiff Pitbull mix, and it works wonders...I think it's a more positive sound to the dog than a deep command....and they just seem to respond to positive reinforcement versus stern commands...like it you said, it makes it fun...

Thank you very much Will for showing this method of training. Most trainers do not put any value to forming a relationship while training. It makes so much sense. I am presently trying to retrain a friend's dog that is simply 'wild'. It is one of the most stubborn dog I know - a 4 year old Jack Russell that had never been properly trained. It was bought for a 5 year old child who has no idea about training a dog to walk on a lead. Parents are not keen to walk the dog because it pulls so hard. I shall try to break the cycle using some of your principles. Thank you. Best wishes.

Watching this video has given me the confidence to start early with new pup on leash pulling. Im very small and petite and can get pulled literally off my feet. Does being small make a difference in training? im going to be doing the most training this time as hubby is working full time. He is 6 foot and trained our last pup. Many thanks

Hi Will. Thank you again for a lovely joyous video of dog training. I think it also needs to be said that owners need to be prepared to put in the necessary time when the dog is at this age to establish this crucial bond. And why wouldn't you want to if you have such a beautifully lively puppy like Riley. Many thanks to all of you.

Hi Will. If I understood correctly ur developing a slip collar / long lead combo. I've been using slip collars attached to 10m or 20m long lines, depending on type of training or games I did with dogs. The most annoying thing is that long line gets dragged on the ground all the time and catches water, mud, poo and whatever else is in the way. I've been looking for some kind of long line that is strong enough to hold a large strong dog and doesn't collect so much water and all those other things as it's all over my hands later. And it needs a strong clip at the end that won't snap when dog tries to go for another dog. Ur product might be exactly what im looking for. Maybe one of ur viewers could recommend something else for the time being?

Mate! I really love your videos. I would love to go into the whole journey I'm having with my daughters 12 month old Rotwieller, but I want to keep this short. Between you and one other youtube channel I am making "good" progress. If I may give you a tip on how to advise others or especially new dog owmers , it's something I have learnt over the past 3-4 months is two things... 1. It's not just about traing the dog. I am teaching myself just as much as the dog. Pay a lot of attention to what I am doing and correcting myself first. 2nd. PATIENCE/CONSISTENCY.... It's ok if something takes weeks, just stick at it. And 3. Pay attention to the accidental things that work in your favour. For example, I have taught her to walk on a loose lead, but being 12 months old she likes to creep ahead of me. Instead of giving the chain a gentle tug, I let the lead go slack and when she feels the latch on her shoulder she stops , looks at me and waits till she is in the heel position. My point is....People don't always need a quick fix from a dog trainer. They need to be told by people like you to just "stick at it" "Be consistant" "Be patient" and "Enjoy the time together"

Thanks for all the great videos! I have watched tons of your uploads and bought the Canine Boot Camp course. Even though I'm only at the end of week one, all the info has really helped me setting things in order and understand the meaning of many of the things I was told to do as an owner, but never really knew why. how the macro behaviour can help prevent the micro unintentional behaviour by taking a few steps back and look at yourself as a leader instead of focusing on whatever issue your dog is showing. one thing I think would be awesome, would be you, filming a whole walk with an adult dog and/or a puppy, and show the heel-work, the exercise, and what a "pack-walk" will look like. what are reasonable expectations for a dog during the walk and so on. more or less unedited for the sake of education :) greetings, from an owner of a 6yo Jack russell terrier :)

Wow, this is great to watch and learn. You do a great job. I do have a question though. My dog is soon going to be 9 months old. She is a border collie mix so fairly big. I am a senior and sometimes find it hard to control her as I am trying my best to get her to walk nicely. In the backyard she is great but once I take her out front on the sidewalk she just wants to go and pulls a lot. some times treats don't even work. What should I do? I live alone with her and at home, she is a great dog, with good manners.

Would you consider making videos about training and socializing older pups (grown-ups)? About a year ago my girlfriend and I adopted a Malinois-Husky mix, she is beautiful and amazing but we have a really hard time getting her not to act insecure everywhere, which insecurity also leads her to be incredibly afraid of larger dogs than her, and even aggressive with dogs smaller than her (except with our other dog, who she adores). We found her on the street and later realized she is about 3 years old and has gone through some really bad times as a puppy, and I think very many people would benefit from a video where you explained the difference between training adults vs puppies if there are any, since I think many people are trying to correct some bad behaviors in older dogs.
