I really appreciate that they chose not to give Stoick any cheesy last breathless lines. It was far more impactful for him to just suddenly be gone. Even though I was gutted he died 😢

Right! Nobody gets to say goodbye, there's no last final moments between he and Hiccup, or his wife that he only just now reconnected with after 20 years thinking she was gone for good. None of that, and Stoick was gone in a split second. As gut wrenching as his death really is, I'm so glad it was done the way it was because it's so much more impactful that way

I love the reality of some of the things they do in these films. There was no last breath death bed speech. Just instant death. Life just ends sometimes and it hurts. He didn't give it a second thought to save his son

Yeah. Ya boi has almost died before of cancer. I had no last wordy speech before surgery. I just said " let's hope the nurses are cute " then had a heart attack and almost died on the table.

About the dad we see a whole different side to him especially from his mom saying that when he was born and very weak it's the dad that had faith in him. The thing is they have to remove the dad from the series if hiccup is to grow. For his whole life the dad was like a safety net.

Right? And the fact that it wasn't jarring how he reacted to seeing his wife again even tho he's always been characterized as a hard man. It just felt like we're finally seeing an extension of Stoick we never got to see, that we're finding out he's a romanticist and that totally fits. They didn't have to hammer that in. I really love how they wrote him. Old but gold trope.

If you watch the first movie carefully, his actions in the second movie are obvious. Yes, on the surface, he's hard and stubborn (and so is Hiccup, in his own way). But when he's talking to Gobber about how Hiccup is not like the other vikings, he's not being dismissive. He's worried, wondering how Hiccup is going to survive. Gobber even points it out, saying that Stoick is not going to always be there to protect him. Stoick was so against Hiccup going into dragon training because he knew that Hiccup isn't a dragon slayer, and he was right. Sure, he didn't listen, but immediately after he disowned Hiccup, you can see how hard it hits him, leaving him reeling and lost. He was a good man in a murky situation. Once he sees that dragons are just animals, and realizes this is how Hiccup can survive, he's overjoyed. He wants Hiccup to be the chief, despite everything that's happened, because he knows that Hiccup will be the best leader that Berk can have.

There are several series. To put it simply it fills in the time and events between the movies.

Dreamworks does animated series for a lot of their films, multiple series for some -- Kung Fu Panda, Boss Baby, Puss in Boots, Madagascar (Penguins, King Julian, etc), HTTYD, etc. The animation is not as detailed; you won't see individual hairs, etc. and some of the shows are aimed at younger viewers. But the animation is still enjoyable to look at, the writing is good, there's good voice actors and the TV shows are able to feature some of the minor characters and give them background. Not necessarily canon, but I really enjoyed the ones I watched.

You should look up the behind the scenes interview skit with kit and toothless, it's hilarious 😂 every step on hiccup and toothless' journeys are parallels. When the chief and alpha both die, and the two of them having to step up 😢...in the third film too their arcs match well.
