I truly believe that we are all told that when we retire we are supposed to travel, and do all these activities! I’m so glad I’m not alone in the idea that I don’t care about travel! I don’t mind a little but I have no desire to travel the world! I want our retirement to be relaxing and calm! “Slow living is happy living”…best quote ever!

Although I work out and walk every single day except for Sunday, I have no desire to travel at all. My husband passed away 10 years ago and I live alone with my dog, and I am very content the way my lifestyle is.

It's funny how many people think that traveling is something all retirees should do. I'm content working on projects in my home and seeing more of the sights in my town.

Having retired at age 53, I am now in my early 60s. Many pushed back against me, unable to understand the idea of not working if it's not necessary. I perceived phases in my life. In my latter years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses," even if I worked very hard to obtain what I have now. For me, after retiring, I departed the nation and now reside in Latin America. It made me appreciate my new surroundings while removing myself from all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody I've met regrets retiring, as far as I know.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I think this is something I should do, but I've been stalling for a long time now. I don't really know which firm to work with; I feel they are all the same but it seems you’ve got it all worked out with the firm you work with so i surely wouldn’t mind a recommendation.

My husband is 90 and I’m 87, we are in good health and have been retired for 24 years, living in a senior apt. Where they have a lot of games and activities. No dinners so I still have to cook. Boo! My favorite thing is sitting here in the quiet. He goes to the next town to play chess twice a week, yea! Simple is good!

I’m in WA state and am a recent widow at age 82. I’m in the difficult process of decluttering, learning to do things I never had to do before, and letting go of my whole life up till now. I’ve watched hundreds of videos. But yours is the first one I’ve watched that calmed me. I’m an introvert and our world was extrovert and activity based. I glimpsed through your video the simplicity I dream of bringing into my life. Thank you so much.

Well, I'm ashamed of myself but I'm very happy. I don't exercise, but I'm not overweight, I eat what I want, I don't spend money on decorations any more, If I'm not going out I spend my day in pijamas, I don't open the door to anybody, I don't want to be bothered, I live frugal because I have to not because I want to, 😆 I know im terrible. I don't have a routine. I hear many people talking about routines makes them happy, in my case going with the flow makes me happy. I guess I'm not KZbin material 😂.

lol, nothing wrong with that. My entire adage is about living in joy! We all derive joy, happiness and comfort differently. There 2.5 BILLION people who watch KZbin every month…there are people out there who are just like you and want to interact with someone who they can identify with… there’s definitely a place for KZbin for everyone. The reason I started my channel was because I couldn’t find a channel that I identified with… so I made one.

I don't have a "routine" but I do need to take a few minutes to think about the day and list a couple of goals for the day --if if it is "deal with tomatoes" or such. I don't want to be totally aimless. I keep a habit tracker to check off things like basic hygiene because l let things slip otherwise.

This is a great reminder for me. I'm packing for travel tomorrow and realizing how little I really need to take with me. I'm making a promise to myself that when I return, I commit to start with the garage and go thru each room in the house and clear the clutter. That is my birthday gift to myself (and my children) at 83yrs. It's never too late to start. Thank you.

Oh Raina, I agree with your tips. Since I retired, I’ve changed a lot of things in my life ( my husband was ok) . Now we have new and modern furniture, not a lot of decorative things (accessories) and it makes my life peaceful and my mind very calm. I like going to the cinema and like you less is more about wardrobe and makeup. I didn’t realize how we change when we are retired. Thank you for your excellent videos, good job 👍 😀😘

Loved this video as I relate so much and am very close to retirement. I am also an introvert that loves being at home with my pets and I also exercise at home and walk when it is not super cold like now. I live in Quebec Canada. The one thing I wish to do when I retire is to minimise more as I have a very small apartment and way too much clutter. I realise when I do a big clean up every week that I feel my place is not to my satisfaction because I have too much. Renaissance and other good will shops will be inheriting lots soon. When that project is complete I wish to start writing. I also love to paint. Thanks so much for all you share! God bless you!
@smallretiredlife
@smallretiredlife 9 күн бұрын
It's amazing how much lighter you'll feel when you minimize your possessions and create the space to write and paint! Though to be fair, it’s really hard to purge things. By the way, I absolutely love Quebec. I used to go there for work a lot, and both Montreal and Quebec city are amazing. When I first moved to Canada, I lived in Montreal for the first three years so French was actually my first language I learned in Canada English was my third language. Czech is my first.

Im definitely a big time “people person,” mother of a large family, and grandmum to many- but as bn I’m aging & my hubby & I have retired, I’m finding I need to train myself to simplify, scale back my activity levels, and learn to be more restful. Making sure my environment is less and less cluttered is helping me quiet my soul and be content in the richness of less. I think I’ll be tagging along with your videos for awhile to help me navigate this quieter, new-to-me terrain!

I have accidentally retired at 50. I took time off work to help my Mum when my Dad died from a stroke last year, and just haven't returned. Looking back I had major burn out and anxiety from being self employed. I love my slower life now, I have time for my family and can be the stay at home Mother that I wanted to be when my children were at school even tho they are leaving home now. 😭I am embracing my introvertedness and am enjoying "right now" with no routine! Life is short and it's so important to do what makes you happy.

This is my first time watching your channel! I retired over 10 years ago at age 57, and my husband (who is 8 years younger than I am) continued to work his full-time job. That is, until July of this year. He has been in a very unique career that, sadly, is diminishing: he was a classical music radio announcer. I was scheduled for total knee replacement therapy (which took place 9/9 of this year). He was a one-man show in his job, and never had time off anymore. He knew that unless he left his job he would be unable to be around to help me in the crucial first few weeks after surgery.. He decided to go into semi-retirement, and his last day was the last day of July. We've only had this past couple of months as retirees together, but it's been fine, and we, too, have learned to live more simply. And, oh, my recovery from surgery is going great guns!

I just came across this video and found it very useful and informative. I agree with all of your points. When it comes to exercise, I go to three exercise classes a week because I know I will NOT exercise at home and for the purposes of socialization. I enjoy the exchanges before and after the class. I do have my precious pup and so do walk everyday. Now I could not do without him. I having been moving towards a much more simple life. If there are more than 5 ingredients in a recipe, then I don't make it. I have done much decluttering over the past three years snd when I look around my home, I get a deep sense of satisfaction from the calmness of my spaces. Routines are a must for me and having a spot for everything is a life saver. I love reading and will read almost anything. It became an such an expensive hobby that now I borrow books from the library, from our neighbourhood book exchange shelves, from my retired grp book exchange and my exercise grp book exchange. Haven't bought a book in years unless it is one that been highly recommended and if I can't borrow, will then maybe buy it, depending upon whether it fits into my budget. Yes I have a budget that I follow monthly. I used to be an huge impulse buyer and that haf to stop. A budget helps me do that Thank you for this. You have given me much to think about. 🤗 I think I will subscribe to your channel.

This is a great list! You have my sympathy with clearing out a family home. AMEN no seasonal decor. One of my best memories was putting everything my husband and I owned in 1 Honda civic and left for 9mn., most wonder time ever. I thought this was crazy, but it was so freeing everything we owned had to fit in this small car. When my mom passed my 2 sisters had to travel to her house for 1 year every single week-end, with 1-3 construction dumpsters went and tossed and went through everything I know when my husbands mom passed away out of state we had to travel on wk-ends nightmare and go through everything it was horrible-I would not wish this on anyone so we have said no we will not do this to our child as we age we are paring down each year we keep what we use and give away what we don't

Very good points. Clutter and anxiety - they do go together. Good point. On the simple food, I like to make large mixed vegetable soups, with barley, lentil sometimes, and freeze portions. It is so good on a cold evening or if you are perhaps not feeling so good to take a portion out and have a really good meal - adding a piece of chicken or meatballs, also in freezer. A protein on the side.

I retired at 57 & I'm living on a modest income and still can help family when the need is there. Friends, co-workers thought it was too early claiming I would miss working. Never gave it a though, never missed it, done with the routine of always been on someone else's clock. ( 19 yrs to 57) Only on my time now doing exactly what I like when I like. Hi Raina, I stumbled onto your video. I liked the fact that you are Canadian. I live in southern Manitoba with my husband who is 79. He is 16 years older than I am and we have been retired for many years now. We live in the country where it is very calm and quiet. I like the term slow living and believe we live that type of life. But, just because we live a slow life doesn’t mean we aren’t doing things. We use only wood stoves for heat. My husband cuts and hauls all the wood from our property that we burn. We also have a big vegetable garden. We love our property and the beauty of it is hard to get enough of. We are not living a life of turmoil and make decisions in our life to keep it tranquil. Enjoyed your video. Looking forward to watching more of them.

I just came back from spending two days with her at their acreage and it was absolutely wonderful. Except for the sound of wild animals, I heard nothing else. I had the soundest of sleep I’ve had in months.

retired for 2 years and I am already doing most of the things that you describe. It took these 2 years for me to settle in, and I guess it has taken this long for my nervous system to calm and not be screaming at me to get busy, do something, don't you have somewhere to be, like right now ?! I have slowly simplified, and found that using the principle of living simply can be applied to every area and does take some adjustment. I had lived what I realize now was a un-necessarily complicated life, and who knows why. I continue to find ways to look at my lifestyle differently, and say out loud " what if ? " and then let it go. I have decluttered my home and now I'm going to use your idea of dressing simply and pare down my wardrobe and only have what I actually use in this new leisure, at-home and casual life that I get to enjoy after working so hard for so many years.

I just discovered your channel in the wee hours of this morning, as I was unable to sleep. I am in denial of being retired since I had never fully developed a career from which to retire. So, at age 65 I'm still feeling the unfulfilled need and desire to work. At age 57 I left Ontario and moved to Quebec. As an introvert and home body, learning French and adapting to a new culture has been challenging and rewarding. I do love the bike lanes here in Montreal and being able to get where I need and want to go using my body's energy. It's invigorating! Your videos may help me to embrace the outcome of previous impulsive decisions I've made. I've always been a seeker. Thank you this channel.

Having moved so many times when I was little and my first husband followed the same trend I’ve lost so much of my life regarding personal items that when I get divorced, I did over a lot of furniture and I collected, and I am probably the nearest almost organized order that you ever met. My house is very organized and very, very clean and I surround myself with items that I truly like everyone that comes in my home says it’s warm and welcoming and that’s exactly how I wanted it to be❤ I understand why you are on the other side of the spectrum than me..I get that, that’s why I am the way I am❤

I find myself gravitating towards a lot of retired/aging life content for some reason (even the workout routines I follow are for seniors--thank you, knee problems :) ). In my mind, I feel like it's primarily because I resonate very strongly with wanting to live a simple, slow life-something more present in later life than it is in your early 20s. Btw, I am from the Philippines! I was surprised to hear you say you worked in the Philippines for a time, and I'd love to see a video about your experiences working abroad someday.

I am 77, I worked part time unto my eary 70's - Covid ended that - but a couple of years ago I started having mobility issues and began doing some of the things you recommend because I was forced to. I was so unhappy, depressed and angry but over time, I adjusted and realized many of the benefits of living a relatively introverted, homebody life. I am going to have my hip replaced soon and hopefully, I will have the mobiity, function, energy and lack of pain that I used to have. I know that I am going to retain some of my new habits but I am looking forward to adding back some elements of my "old" life. I enjoyed this video because it highlights some of the better things about slowing down, decluttering and living a more simple life. I hope to find a way to have the best of both worlds.

@@ayr156 Simple living is a good fit for us introverts. I’m not concerned with driving a luxury car or keeping up with the Jones’s. My ‘garage kept’ 2016 Kia Soul suits me just fine. I’ve hauled furniture, lamps, misc home decor, all my clothes, and boxes of packed books, office supplies, dishes, etc. I’ve also hauled thrifted furniture, including a full sized recliner! It amazes me how much it holds! Instead of worrying about “keeping up with the Jones’s”, I spend my time finding inexpensive ways to make my surroundings cozy, comfortable, serene, and peaceful for all who enter. Many friends have told me that my little abode is “me” and that makes me happy. Here’s to simple happy living!

Good for you since this way of living makes you happy. Just hearing about it makes me sad and bored. I LOVE to decorate and if I were looking around my home and wardrobe at plainness my joy at enjoying the beauty of variety would make me miserable. I have a very small home and am not at all an extravagant person, however, I also do not like cheapness. I LOVE good quality beauty at a reasonable price and buy very little now that I am older and have what I need. I do update things when needed, such as home decor, my wardrobe, and new skin care and makeup products. I just try not to overdo as I don't want to waste money and have little space to store things. I feel looking around my home and having something cute/nice to wear, including a sometimes amazing makeup and skin care products enhances my life as I love pretty things -- just not tons of it.

Great video ! This is pretty much how I live now that I am retired and widowed, except that I have no plants but 3 cats. Here is a tip for winter walking: you can do it indoors in your home with a walking video from a DVD or KZbin. No gym necessary. Montreal winters are pretty rough so this is my alternative to outdoor walks.

One source I have found to inexpensively feed my collection are library sales. These are held by local libraries in the US, as fund raisers. Some of the books are retired library books and some are donated by patrons. Most books are $2 to $6 each. These prices also make it easier to pass them on later.

Apart from the fact that at 66 I’m still working part time, the way I approach my life is so very similar to what you have outlined here. Exercise is imperative including a VIGOROUS walk every single day. I have dumb bells at home and use them while ACTIVE stretching. That said, as a senior joining a gym has many benefits and the cost is minimal. This gets you OUT of your house. Create a routine of getting up and being the first at your gym--use the treadmill and use the weights. It is NOT a fashion show so pick two outfits that handle sweat.
