If you’re living in Turkey and need to use foreign documents for any official purpose, they must be translated into Turkish and notarized. Today, I'll guide you through this process, show you where to go, what you need, and how much it costs. Let’s get started!
Need for Translation and Notarization in Turkey
First, let’s talk about why and when you need your documents translated and notarized. Typically, this is required for legal paperwork, marriage documents, birth certificates, academic certificates, and business contracts intended for official use in Turkey.
Finding a Certified Turkish Translator
You’ll need a sworn translator for the job. You can find certified translators on google easily. Just search for “Yeminli Tercüman”, which means sworn translator. Then, you can contact them to learn about their services and fees. Make sure they are recognized by Turkish authorities to avoid any issues later. Also, when you go to a notary, they might arrange a translator for you.
The Turkish Translation Process
Once you choose a translator, hand over your documents and make the payment. Ensure clarity about what needs translating. It's important to check the translated document for accuracy before it gets notarized. Some sworn translators also give the service of notarizing these documents by going to notaries themselves.
Visiting a Notary in Turkey
With your translated document, head to a notary office. Check with your translators about which notaries you can go. Notaries recognize specific translators in their service area. When you go to the notary that recognizes your translator, the notary will verify the translator’s signature and stamp your document, making it legally valid in Turkey. Note that, the translator needs to give you 2 copies of translation. One will stay at the notary and you will keep the other copy.
Costs of Translation and Notarization
Costs can vary. Translation fees depend on the language and length of your document. Usually a simple passport translation fee is $10. More complicated documents are usually $30 per page. Notarization fees are regulated by the government, it is around $30 per page of document. You need to pay the translator and the notary separately.
Understanding Apostilled Documents
Now, let’s discuss apostilled documents. If your foreign document already has an apostille-meaning it's certified by international standards-you’ll have an easier time. After translation and notarization, this document is typically accepted by Turkish authorities as is.
However, if your document does not have an apostille, the process is a bit more involved. First, you must get it approved by the consulate of the country where the document originated, here in Turkey. After that, the document must also be verified by the local district governor’s office, or 'Kaymakamlık,' to be recognized officially in Turkey.
