My husband had a total knee replacement a few years back and his calf swells up. When he takes his work boot off, you can see how bad it is. I try to help him by massaging it. I never thought of a roller, so I am happy to try these techniques!

These rollers are great. Standard rolling pin works well. He could also consult with a lymphedema specialist to see if there are any compression garments.

Now I know why my leg is hurting so much! They should really tell you what to expect & not rose color a TKR!

Thank you Tony for your GOD given wisdom and years of studying AND then giving it to so many! Surgery RTKR 10.11.22. I tried the rolling pin about two weeks ago and my thigh screamed at me!😂 I have used my hand and fingers to massage but I like the idea of the single roller and frozen water bottles. Thank you again Tony and your family too!😇 ☺😊

I am officially one week post TKR surgery and I'm having extreme band pain around my thigh. I was looking for ways to try to get some of this pain out of my thigh area. These tips are very helpful! By the way the best part of the video is when your kids are coming in! You could tell right away that is a happy house. It totally made me laugh and that is something that helps with management of this pain as well. You couldn't have made that better if you tried!!! Thanks again for the good information.

I am 17 days out and normally pretty good handling pain, but this pain is stupid. The drugs help, for me sometimes make it gone, sometimes seem to do nothing, especially at night, (like right now, 4:27am after sleeping a few interrupted times.) Last night I got 45min total. I've got one for you, my surgeon hasn't heard of and none of my PT's have heard it before....so here goes, I haven't a thing to lose by posting the question here....I'm 11 wks post op, left knee, and right in the center of the back of my knee, right at the bend, whenever I exhale from a sigh or a yawn or a sneeze, it feels like a sharp knife is stabbing me. This started about 4 wks post op. Can't find a thing on it from google, my surgeon is 71 yrs old, has done 10's of thousands of TKR and has never heard of it. I have the other knee being done in less than 2 wks and I just hope it doesn't happen with that as well. I figured I'd post it so if anyone can relate, know they aren't alone.

Thank you,I will try it. My overly eager PT,demanded 30 times hanging my leg with pressure and other exercises which caused severe burning & stabbing pain in my quad,second day it’s still extremely painful that I can’t flex my knee nor lift my leg I tried Icing & vibrating massage & it hurts like H…. To try walking I had 120 degree flexion already

When does it go away, typically? i had hip replacement 6wks ago.i was doing great @ 5 wks until i sat on my bed, one leg on the floor, my surgical leg bent “Indian style” but, when i stood up i could put NO pressure on my leg! …BEYOND PAINFUL.. as the week went on my thigh has been killing me, can barely walk! Went to PT yesterday & her diagnosis was the same as yours, using rolling pin type equipment…it seemed to work!!. I hope you see this *THANKS!

I live in the United Kingdom and I had a total knee replacement at the age of 52 in 2015, I was told I had Tourniquet pain and to go away because they couldn't do anything about it I have absolutely struggled for the last six years the pain in my leg is horrendous and you have shown me something that the medical profession in the United Kingdom seems unable to prescribe, it's times like this that I wish I lived in the USA because the medical profession in the United Kingdom is beyond disgraceful

I had a TKR almost 3 weeks ago and my calf pain has been like one giant painful Charlie horse. I’ve iced it, used heat, massaged it though very painful and yet it won’t go away. What causes this and how do I make it go away?
@totaltherapysolutions5 жыл бұрын
Kat Mendez the first thing is to rule out any blood clot. After that this is a very common report from my patients and I think part of it comes from the surgery, but then the rest comes from the way a client walks after surgery. The only thing I have found effective is continued massage with the rolling pin, a ball, any device you have available. But the concern remains the possible blood clot. Have you been cleared of that?
@KTZADOK7775 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for getting back to me. Blood clot has been ruled out. I’m on flexeril now and nothing helps. So frustrating.

Where do you put the caster & rolling-pin for extension issues? The muscle that is super tight (it is like a leather horse strap) is just above the knee but at the back of my leg. Do i need to be an acrobat to massage it? To date i have just been having a super hot bath!
@tami37394 жыл бұрын
Hi Betsy, I've been using your bath method (thankyou) and while still in the tub I sit with my back against the tub and slowly slide my heel toward my body to get some flexion, while in flexion I use both my hands to incircle the back of my thigh and massage upward . I might be able to do that with a rolling pin in the tub but worried that I will eventually ruin the rolling pin. When I get out of the tub and still warm and relaxed I do prone hangs or sit on the bed or sideways on the couch with a towel roll under my heel and add a bit of pressure just above the knee to encourage downward movement (extension). sometimes for a full 30 minutes. I always finish up with ice packs both under and over my knee. That tight strappy muscle will begin to loosen up over time.
