Love it ❤️ or hate it 😭? ...Do you think pulsing xenia coral can be managed? I look forward to hearing what you think.
@kevinclasher31603 жыл бұрын
You’re doing it the hard way... grow Xenia on a rock and put another rock next to it, eventually it will grow onto the other rock, then you remove the old rock and you repeat this cycle. You sell the rock thats full of xenia back to your lfs or give them to friends. As long as there is space for the xenia to grow it will not break off and attach to other rocks.

I'm think about getting pulsing xenia for my reef tank as it's a new tank and i think gsps and xenia with it but i don't really know where to put them fo i need to keep them completely separate (different rocks)or just in different sides of a rock
@IndoorReef Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how they will both react when they touch but if its a big tank make sure you can reach them to manage it if you don't want it everywhere. Once it gets bigger bits will break off and grow where ever it lands. It can get out of hand quickly.

I’m new at this do I need to have the light on always for the corals?
@IndoorReef3 жыл бұрын
Hi. The light should not be on all the time. Most people run their light during the day for between 8 and 12hrs. I run mine for 13hrs but its a very slow ramp up and ramp down. If you have a light with advanced control to control the light intensity with a program then you can do something like this too. If you can only turn it on and off then maybe a shorter time is best.

Quick question..I have a 12 gallon drop off tank and I put some Xenia at the bottom of the drop off..the par is pretty low like 45-60 par..I can brighten the reef light but I don't want to stress my other corals out..What's the minimum light Xenia would survive in ?
@IndoorReef2 жыл бұрын
Oooh, a drop off, nice! This is a good question and I'll be honest, I don't know the answer. A PAR of 60 sounds on the low side but xenia might still be alright. What's your PAR higher up? Might be better to increase things a bit if you have some head room higher up.

I think you could probably go a little higher, but you know your tank best so do what you're comfortable with. If you do go higher, maybe very slow (I do it over months), letting it settle in between changes to properly see effects. I'm assuming you already have the lights and would just need to turn them up, not invest in new ones. I wouldn't worry about the PAR at the top if there are no corals there, just focus on getting the PAR where your corals are (your liverock measurement I assume?).
@IndoorReef2 жыл бұрын
Let me know how you get on and hopefully some other people will share their thoughts here too, to give you some more opinions. If you haven't seen my recent PAR measurement video, might mbe interesting for you.
@milkspotscausemetospazzout68132 жыл бұрын
@IndoorReef that's my par levels.. These Xenias were new to my tank.I added them to my tank then about 3 days later I put Reef Roids in my tank for the first time but I added the recommended dose..The next day the Xenias stopped Pulsing and started declining..they went from pink to purple and white.I place 1 frag in a 1 gallon Pico tank that I also have ,once they were sick...that frag got healthy pretty quick it's pretty close to the light fixture in the pico . Its at like 130 par..I didn't think that frag was gonna make it I just placed it there to see what would happen ..well that frag is pulsing already and is pink,i noticed it today..I had also added reef roids to that Pico tank the same day i added some to my 12 gallon drop off tank...so my thoughts are that it's my light,needs to be brighter at the drop off.The bottom of the drop off is 24 inches from my light...I'm gonna bump up the light ...my light is capable of creating about 700 par at surface so the light creates enough par to grow coral....I think I'll just slowly brighten the drop off a bit...I'm gonna rent a par meter for 30 bucks at my local fish shop in the morning..I'll update you how they are doing ...maybe this thread will help someone els out also if mine make it lol.

My pulsing xenia stopped pulsing within a week and then just slowly melted away, where as my hammer and torch and gsp are absolutely thriving. Do you have any tips for keeping Xenia?, I want to try it again. Thanks in advance.
@IndoorReef2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I know it's been months since you commented but I must have missed this one. Sorry for that. Did you have another go? How did it work out? Long before I made this video, mine almost totally melted away (to the point I though only a frag plug was left!) when I tried to freshwater dip it to remove these brown flat worms. It surged back so strong to like what you see here. I never really knew what happened either. I know this will be subjective but I would say when doing wel, mine was in reasonably low light and fairly gentle flow in case that helps.

@IndoorReef4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Setting up a first tank can be such an exciting time. 😊 Have you considered putting the pulsing xenia on a separate rock until you make your mind up on where you stand? If you decide to do this it can make it easier to change your mind later and still looks just as cool. You still have to watch our for bits breaking off as it grows bigger but still much easier to manage.
@MichaelPybus4 жыл бұрын
@@IndoorReef I'm planning on attaching it to it's own frag rock and attaching it to the sump wall so it can grow up that and then doing the same with GSP on the back glass - I know these two corals are seen as weeds but I like them but for sure don't want them taking over so thought they could make for interesting backdrops.

@@IndoorReef Do you buy your corals from a LFS or online? If online any recommendations for good place to order? London doesn't seem to have many options locally
@IndoorReef4 жыл бұрын
I'm lucky to have some good local stores. That's a shame about London. One of the shops I go to with a big range of corals and fish is Abyss Aquatics. They have a lot of choice and a fair price. They started doing online delivery earlier in the year although I've not used that service myself... www.abyssaquatics.co.uk/ I'm considering ordering some coral online at some point from somewhere just to try it. If I do, I might make a video to share the experience. The thing is the tank is quite full now.

Get you another small tank with a cheap light. Throw some frag plugs in there with the Xenia you trim, they'll attach. Then sell them or trade them for other corals. Throwing them away is such a waste.

That's definitely the dark side of xenia! I didn't introduce it to my new tank as it's just too much work to manage and even when you're careful it can still end up spreading.
