@3:56 The Train won't pass the node, because the train in front is still in the section between nodes. To solve this make sure your nodes are spread apart enough to allow a full train, otherwise they may occupy two sections instead of one, causing the larger gaps between trains. (The nodes are where the signal gantries are, which is why the train would not proceed)

Regarding the Y-train junctions, split one brach of the Y in to two one way tracks, and the one which would normally cross over, make it go over or under the "main" line.

Yes! This! If I had the skills I'd create a thing on the workshop that has a 2 track railway split into a central regular 2 track connection and single track oneway connections on the sides, and one version each that also has one of those side tracks do a nicely sloped flyover ending in a re-merged 2 track connection.

An advice for your next city: railway slopes shouldn't be over 1% (freght trains can't climb and brake on steeper slopes) I love your content, please don't take that as a criticism, it is just a suggestion to make it a bit more realistic
@SirJack5885theFirst
@SirJack5885theFirst 3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the vertical scaling in Cities skylines isn't scaled the same way as the horizontal scaling. So having a slope greater than 1% is kind of necessary.

We run on grades of well over 1% every day with 150 car and larger freight trains with no issues.
@hellsop
@hellsop 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, which makes the planning of rail and road very ... interesting. To meet a 1% slope over a road takes a 500m run (1/4 of a tile side) to get up and and the same back down to clear the 5m over a road, and twice that to clear another railway at 10m. The only way to manage that in practice is to resign oneself to either a whole lot of at-grade crossings (with heavy consequence in traffic flow) or run rails either in cuts or on embankments for most of the through-city operations and putting cargo terminals and train stations on the tops of hills or in pits. Which is exactly how it's managed most places where the community is older than the rails. If the railway were there first, there's just a lot of road flyovers (or at-grade crossings when traffic is light enough), and duplication of resources and services from one side of the rail to the other.

@@toddcrone7803 well for that reason I wrote that "railway slopes *shouldn't* be over 1%" Freight trains performance dramatically drops over that, and that's the same for high speed trains (which barely go over 0.35%). In general the maximum limit is something like 4%, but of course there are exceptions considering different types of trains
@wreckyoualways
@wreckyoualways 3 жыл бұрын
i think train traffic is best managed by separating your inter-city trains from your city trains. like a hub where passengers and cargo come into the city and then transfer to the local train or public transport. essentially one just keeps the inter-city trains on different tracks. lemme know what u think

Also when your city line is blockaded by traffic, your supply line is broken and the game things you need more imports, thus pumping more unwanted traffic into your city

Even that solution pushes limits when the city gets large enough. Essentially when you have 4-5 used cargo stations you would need more capacity at the stations themselves to serve all the traffic, at least that is my experience.

Fixing trains is such a fun part of this game, although a bit aggravating. One of the techniques I use is make sure every segment can hold at least a full train, or is divisible by a full segment. It's a greatest common denominator problem.

When you say segment what do you mean?

@@cf453 stackers? What does stackers mean? I've been playing this game for years and today I learn of trains fitting one segment, but what's a segment and what's it's length? And stacker's what the f are they?
@MrKholishUmar
@MrKholishUmar 3 жыл бұрын
@@whynotagain3639 From what I understand, they might mean that in a train junction, the train should be able to stop without blocking the intersection for another train to pass to the other way, so any "section", i.e. parts, of the Y junction (or any other place where lines met) should be long enough to accommodate one train in full stop. And it is advisable to make another line for the train to pass through without going into a station if your station is in the main line, so you should make a line besides/parallel to the station's line for the trains that doesn't need to get into the station (for me, in my game I just usually make the station off my main line, thus avoiding any unwanted traffic).
@whynotagain3639
@whynotagain3639 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrKholishUmar thanks, so stacking just means bypassing the station, I do that anyway and try to keep my cities looking realistic so I've got no single track anywhere, in real life most tracks are at least 4-6 wide, so keep mine that wide too. I'm confused at making sure it can fit in the station though, all trains are different lengths so how do ascertain the correct length for the segment? The issues I have are the very long freight trains causing the traffic, might need to completely separate it, but again that's not realistic at least not in the UK anyway.
@peperoni3140
@peperoni3140 3 жыл бұрын
The problem will always be the intersections where trains need to cross over the track going the opposite direction. Splitting the tracks into one way tracks that join into the correct side solves the problem, but take up a lot more time and space
@lukasmax6984
@lukasmax6984 3 жыл бұрын
No necessarily. We already have places that have 3 pairs of straight train tracks side by side for no obvious reason. Multi level interchanges will eliminate the need of having several pairs of train tracks side by side. Edit: Also the need of having each track segment to be long enough to fit an entire train, will not be a problem any more.

The nuclear option would be to use one way train tracks and basically create an interchange at ever major intersection. I've found that the problems always stem from trains crossing over multiple tracks to turn off to a new route. Downside: it takes more space if you want it to look realistic (without 45 degree sloped tracks lol)
3 жыл бұрын
Would probably be enough to do it at the major junctions though

Hello there. The one larger gap may be caused by the "Do not enter junction" thing? If I remeber right this can also happen on train tracks. Maybe traffic manager can be used to solve this larger gap. It appears to happen whereever a road or track becomes a bridge.

I've said it before and I'll say it again ... use one-way railway tracks to create flyovers so that tracks aren't crossing over each other, this reduces conflict points and massively reduces the risk of train gridlock. Also when you remove the level crossing, it would be much more realistic to leave the railway where it was and put the road on a bridge.

Another solution to the trains bunching at the edge of the map is simply to use lane connectors at the last node. One track is exit only, the other is entrance only, and no more problems with two trains both trying to come in. Figured this one out when I had four inbound trains -- two at each end!

You can get more control over the "intercity" trains by drawing train lines from stations to the spawn points at the edges of the map. This functions as an internal train line but is actually bringing tourists in. That way you can control the number of trains on the line as normal. Congratulations Biffa, Cities Skylines World Champion! I couldn't stay to watch the whole thing as I had to go to work but I did binge watch your stream, Spiffing Brit's stream and the Red Bull stream when I got back. I always said you'd win, though I had a wobble when you didn't win the traffic fixing challenge. Only having 30 mins to clear the traffic does add pressure.

Your inter-city trains are despawning when they reach their destinations not because it's normal but because you've made their connections just one way in or out and every connection point is meant to be BOTH in and out because it's regarded as a separate destination outside your city.

one think to consider is, that you should treat (busy) rail lines like (busy) highways: don't have left turns crossing oncoming traffic. Split them to the right and have them pass under or over the uncoming track. Doesn't fix all problems but helps a lot.

Congrats on the victory. You have to make a memorial ceremony in Alien Rock Park for the rocks that fell on the way to victory. And make a park with the trophy. Or is there a maker, that can recreate the trophy as a building in New Tealand??? I think that it was a competition like ‘The Great British Bake Off’ where you great builders competed under pressure. It was thrilling for us knowing spectors to watch it as a adrenaline pumped event where you had to use your skills to beat the others.

Was Fun watching you Guys play CS in a "competitive" Mode =) About the distance the Trains stop behind each other: Kinda sure if you take the node control Tool you could see why ;) I was wondering at wich point you'll see what the Railroads are build like. Imho its a very bad setup concidering trains. I rly like the Map, its very beautiful. But the Trains.... oh my. On my first play on the Map i ended up deleting the whole Traffic every now and then. Cause the Trains got sooo bad xD

0:44 - I saw the first "boo boo" - you have a triangle intersection where the legs are shorter than a train length so you can get deadlocks. 6:10 - I would have disconnected the road and build a new underpass instead, rails like it when it's flat. As for external connections - I prefer to stretch them to contain a full train length and then if necessary have some one way mesh on the inside if they start to get congested so that there wouldn't be "crossover" traffic. Personally I'd lift the cable car towers on each side of the river a few steps, would not be a problem from realism perspective.

I couldn't add my comment just after the video was released. But... I love this map. I created my own version of it by making separate train tracks /except line on the outher islands/ with export/import station at each end /thanks Flabaliki/ I fixed junctions using lane mathematics /thanks Biffa/, I fixed topografy and slopes /thanks City Planner/. After all of that nuclear power plant, water source and sewage solution. And now I'm enjoying your episodes on one screen while I'm building my city on the other. Thank you so much for inspiration to do more and more plans to expand and enjoy this game. Again.

About your new stadium island, and the cable cars: wouldn't the cables need to be SIGNIFICANTLY taller than the boats, and not JUST ABOUT taller than the boats. The cars hang below the cables. You need the CARS themselves to be above the boat level, not just the cables.

I hope they fix this train bs in CS2. It sucks to have to put so much time into figuring out train traffic and nothing ever works because the game just sends way too many trains into your city.

Railways: (1) Switches too close together. Real railways use signals to keep trains from getting too close, but S:C doesn't seem to have that; without, you want enough distance between switches to hold a train, to reduce the risk of blocking. (2) Double track switches are themselves a problem: there's a crossing in there where trains from one direction can block those from the opposite direction. This is more expensive to fix: you'd need to use single one-way tracks to get one direction up and over (or down and below) to get in from the other side. (Avoid level crossings.) (3) As someone else mentioned: keep slopes down. 1% is a lot for real trains - steel on steel is slippery. Cable cars: nope, not high enough. The cable cars themselves need to pass some distance over the ships.

Hey Biffa, What fixed the train issue for me on a stock map was to give the first node inside of the map (the one you were fixing with additional tracks) by simply giving the retriction that switching is not allowed. (With TMPE). Also working with one way tracks at busy junctions enhances train flow drastically as you can prevent tracks crossing each other.

Yup. Just to add my congratulations. Well done fella. I hope there is another RB challenge, but clearly there needs to be some tweeks. The traffic management round was just a hack really. However, it was my first e-sport support, and I got into it. Well done everyone.

When I do train intersections, I use one-way rail and bridges so the trains never have to cross over oncoming traffic, like highway interchanges. That way you never have a traffic backup going one way stopping the traffic going the other way.

1. Outside connections for train is always a pain in the ass when using 81 tile mod. 2. Reduce train budget to 75-80%. Means less trains on the tracks. 3. There are shorter comuter trains in the workshop. Helps when you have a large train network.

All this talk about lane mathematics for highways, but nothing for rail? Lane mathematics are wayyyy more important for rails than roads, and all the issues you're having here are because of poor lane/rail math (4 rails going into 1 and then splitting off into 4 again, come on!). C:S train stations are also pretty bad. If you look at real-world stations, they often have dozens of decks (for industries). You might want to look into better industrial train station assets because a 2 deck station will *always* create a bottleneck.

All of these train problems wont exist if Cities:Skyline had a proper signalling system implemented in game. It would be something I would expect from Colossal Order if they ever make C:S 2

A Bad hw interchange will block an area, for rail it will block the whole map! Am I the only one wondering why there are millions of road interchanges in the workshop, but hardly any for trains? Shout-out to Nicolas Blume, who's created the best ones (imho)

Excellent work on the REDBULL Challenge! It was brilliant. With the train issue why don't you do an on and off ramp like with the roads so there is no track crossing? Split the track into one way tracks then bridge over to the far side. Just an idea

I had a similar problem with my train network... Then I noticed why: 1 Station spawned a new train everytime the other left, so 1 train spawned around every 10 seconds... And they didnt despawn... :

Hi Biffa, Thank you for all your interesting contents. Just a question, why are you not using single track railroad to overpass the X-cross at busy junctions by connecting the track directly on the driving side? In my 500k city, I have a very extensive rail network and it works really fine until a train stay forgotten in a station due to game limits.

Train problems are a real mess in Cities Skylines. Thanks for the trains leaving and entering the map. I had trouble with this in every single game and I had not found a good solutions. However, I found two fixes for inside the map: (a) Connect freight terminals with a single line in and a singe line out (at the other end). This avoids blocks in the terminal, as trains try to cross over. (b) Never connect a busy line with dual tracks. Have a point/switch on each side. One for incoming and one for outgoing trains. Also on a side note: The one train with the bigger gap, was a shorter train. The distance between trains seems (sometimes?) be governed by the maximal length of a train. As passenger trains are shorter, the gap becomes bigger.

Idea: I want to suggest making a dedicated train tracks for the cargo and passenger trains near High Density and Popular Areas. Traffic may not be backing up then. Also can someone make a mode for Time Traffic Lights for the trains? I think traffic will look much smoother for them.

At 7:33 you build a straight connection, at 8:34 you rebuild this as an overpass or flyover and let the tracks connect from the other side. The game has one-way tracks - you can build both versions so that trains in neither direction have to cross one another. Just think about this like you would think about highway connections or interchanges. Except for rail tracks not having multiple lanes most of your road skills can be applied - I'd love to see a beautiful rail trumpet. 16:38 Shouldn't these crossover points be one train length away from the edge of the map?

I'm building on the same map and I found that sometimes in-bound trains would spawn at the map edge one after another with no break in between, just a constant stream of inbound trains, often on both sides of the track preventing any trains from leaving. Removing the "Optimized Outside Connections" mod stopped this from happening and I've had no problems since.

I know this was suggested already, and I support it, but understand it will be a HUGE amount of work, but perhaps you move the business and passenger trains to their own routes. This way, the passenger trains can just keep going and the cargo trains won't clog up the passenger rail lines. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!

Why don't you do things the other way around? Instead of creating wonky-looking train bridges, you should build over- or under- passes for the roads. Also, when you do create overpasses for the rail, you should create them with one-way rail so that you avoid trains having to cross over the rail coming the other direction..

If your having difficulty with train traffic leaving your city and not moving at all it's to do with a loading error it's when too much is leaving at the same time so to fix this issue delete one part of the track further at the end of the border and replace it so train traffic is coming into the city other side that's leaving will move but will delete automatically it's one way to clear the traffic problem ❤

The problem with your rail intersection is, that they all need to cross the oncoming traffic. That doesn't really make sense for high volume rails. Why don't you treat the junctions like highways? You don't put a give way sign on a highway, you will use one way ramps. Do the same for the busiest train junctions with one way rails, and small overpasses. Looking at real rail network you will see that that is how it is done
