This video details the entire process of tuning a 2022 Ford F-150 Lariat pickup truck with the Livernois Motor Sports MyCalibrator tool. I detail why I chose to tune this truck, how to program the tuner, and how to load a tune on the truck. The tuner cost me near $850 in the year 2022.

Good info. I may still get a Livernois tune, but it will be primarily to get rid of that cylinder deactivation, cleanup shift points and improve mpg.

Good call. I like it just for the cylinder deactivation part. I don't really care too much about the performance other than just for fun. The logic or justification of expense for me was the cylinder deactivation and the max top speed increase. The stock truck quits at 100mph.

Havnt seen much or any improvement in fuel mileage , especially when you have the extra power and the foot likes to mash the peddle lol. Cleans up the occasional clunky harsh downshift. Gets rid of skip shifting. The truck is not lazy anymore. It stays in the right gear when under load. Not having to heavily press the fuel peddle to get it to shift down gears which is def noticeable going up hills. I have governor, skip shift and cly deactivation removed. I dont tow that much so I run my truck with the performance tune always.

Aloha and Mahalo. This video helped me get through the steps all the way in Honolulu Hawaii on a late rainy night. I got stuck after going from the inside to the outside ECU. Error came up wouldn't read the ECU when I hooked up on the outside? After watching your video realized I didn't prompt all the way through when I was hooked up to the inside ECU. Went back inside, went over everything again making sure to complete all the steps. I missed it by one step previously. Went back to the outside ECU and smooth sailing after that. Truck starts up but wasn't able to test yet. It is late and will test run tomorrow. Thanks again for great video.

Awesome Video.. I appreciate you explaining how you did.. no one has done it on your level! One quick question… I also have a 5.0 and yes more power is great but really I want to clean up the transmission cause it’s just clumsy … so with the tune… do you notice the shifts being faster.. meaning like not holding certain gears as long when not full throttle? Obv in full throttle it goes all the way thru but just curious when your not on it on it .

Hi. For my situation I have noticed that on the factory tune the shifting is smooth and the shift points depend on what drive mode I am in and how depressed the throttle pedal is. When I have the Livernois performance tune installed the gears shift much more firmly for sure, which is good and bad. With the performance tune, even when I go from park to drive it's a noticeable "drop", which I actually don't like when I'm just doing normal driving. I did also notice that when I wasn't on E-85 and was racing, I felt like the gear was holding far too long before shifting and I thought that I was missing out on speed. It turned out that the vehicle was pulling timing and losing power when I got over 6,000rpm(due to engine knocking) but was still holding onto the current gear until the higher rpm shift points. This made my acceleration modest at best on the high end of the RPM range. Once I ran with E-85 on a test the top end power over 6,000rpm was dramatically increased and I did recognize all of the performance potential that the engine had to offer. Moral of the story for me is that if I want to race and get a fast time, I'm loading the performance tune and going to 100+ octane fuel or E-85 and if I just want to go to my daughters basketball games I can be just fine with the economy tune and normal 91 octane fuel. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I get about the same as I do with the other tunes honestly. It's gas mpg is more about how you drive along with the drive mode for shifting preferences. I get around 19mpg during the summer if I drive normal and don't tow and then it's closer to 18mpg in the winter when the gas has more additives in it.

Great video. Been looking at tuning my 2022 F-150 to get rid of cylinder deactivation. What does the towing tuning do exactly?
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse Жыл бұрын
Hello, so as I understand it the stock tune includes a balance of performance potential, fuel economy, and rules for keeping the truck from overheating during a heavy workload(towing) situation. With a performance tune some of those protections are removed to unlock more of the truck's higher end capabilities which is why you shouldn't every tow with the performance tune because the truck could hurt itself. I believe that the towing/economy tune is basically stock with the cylinder deactivation disabled and the MPH limiter removed. I'll likely keep the towing/economy tune AKA stock with a few minor modifications active on my truck ongoing so I don't have to change the tune every time I want to hookup my bigger trailer to tow. Thanks for watching!

FYI, I wouldn't say that the tune is worth $800.00 if I didn't have the aftermarket exhaust installed. I have often gone back and forth from stock to the performance tune and it's a very minimal difference that I can detect. I purchased the tune for the removal of the speed limiter and to turn off cylinder deactivation so the exhaust didn't sound bad when it was in 4-cylinder mode. Thanks!

Hello! Thank you for such an excellent and easy to understand video! Do you happen to know if there is any adverse effect on the vehicle's warranty if the tune is changed from the stock tune during the warranty period?
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse Жыл бұрын
Officially, no I can't say for sure but I'll tell you my opinion. On diesel trucks, if you tune them to make more power and then rip up a transmission I would guess the dealership will force back since their workmanship likely didn't cause the damage but I do believe that this tune is safe for a basic gas V8. They tell me not to tow when the performance tune is loaded though to prevent overheating. If I ever take it to the dealership I will be loading the stock tune back but I really don't know how sophisticated the computers at the dealership are. I know if you ask them they'll tell it voids the warranty but that's pretty much the stock answer, no pun intended.

With prices the way they are, I'd like to set it back to factory settings so I can use regular fuel. Unfortunately, we don't know what was done or who did it and without dad, we can't find out. What is the best way to find someone to down tune it for me? Do regular mechanics do this?

Regular mechanics likely will send you to a race place since most race type owners want top performance from their cars. Race places usually charge by the hour and do upgrades. With your situation being a "back to stock" request, I'd see what the dealership can offer in your area based on the vehicles VIN and stock settings. Good luck but you may have a tough one there.

I was thinking the same thing to some degree. That's why I'm going to just stick with the tow/economy tune ongoing unless I would happen to go to the track or wanted to have some fun on E85. I don't want to have to retune the truck every time I want to tow, that's annoying. It does however take care of what I needed, killing the cylinder deactivation and removing the speed limiter. You know I wished for the same and actually took the truck to a DYNO to get a solid comparison. Then between the DYNO schedule and other factors I just let it go taking it back with the flex tune installed and pure E85 in the tank. I am happy with the tune without question and would recommend it. I can tell it's got more pep when the performance tune is installed. It's not wildly faster, it's just a positive noticeable difference. Actually if it wasn't for me wanting cylinder deactivation gone I can't say I'd spend the money for the tune but with the combination of getting rid of the cylinder deactivation and the extra pep, I like it.

The drive modes just change how the other systems in the power train operate, not the engine. The tune is mostly just for the engine. The drive modes will change the amount of power that is given to each axle and will also change the logic for when the transmission will shift to achieve a more "sport" feel by keeping you in the lower gear longer or being more "economy" minded by shifting quickly before the rpm's get too high. Also, when "towing" the transmission will downshift sooner when you are slowing down to help with braking and slowing your load. Hope this helps!

@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse Жыл бұрын
I had the same questions myself. I believe that each state has different warranty laws but in general if the manufacturer can prove that the modification caused the malfunction in question they may reject warranty coverage. As an example, I suppose if you revved it up to 9,000rpm on your own 3rd party tune which is well beyond the stock limit of 6,500rpm, and the engine blew up, they could reject coverage. That's how I interpret it but I am just a customer like you. It would be up to each dealer to determine coverage. Thanks for watching!

Sure, I get pretty much the same MPG as I would with the stock tune. If I run 87 octane with 10% ethanol(not recommended) I get about 18Mpg average and when I use 91 octane without ethanol I get closer to 20Mpg. I will admit that I never noticed how big of an impact gas quality, driving conditions(outdoor air temp, road smoothness), wind, and most importantly my foot on the accelerator had on Mpg until I got this truck. If I would drive super conservatively all the time on mostly highway driving(60Mph) in the summer or fall before winter blend gas hits the pumps I bet I could maintain close to 21Mpg, but I'm usually near 19.5 on average. I had a question when you manual shift is there a big Delay when you shift because when let’s say I shift at 6500 rpm it would be a big delay and hit the limiter and then shift do you got that problem?
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse Жыл бұрын
I think I understand your question but I haven't ever done manual shifting at the high of RPM. I've always done hard accelerations in automatic. What I know is that the stock tune at full throttle will shift at 6,500rpm and the Livernois performance tune will shift at 7,000rpm to take advantage of the higher average HP at the top of the rev range. For me though, the gas quality has held the truck back when up in this high of RPM's and I often felt like the truck had more to give. What I thought was a delay was actually just a reduction in timing due to the truck's computer sensing engine knock and pulling timing. Once I tried higher octane fuel or E85 that improved and the truck powered through the high RPM levels before heading onto the next gear. The delay was gone. E85 was awesome for speed and power but terrible for fuel economy. Best wishes!
@nicoandvinny

@@danimalshouse did you try ever try the higher rpm’s like 7200 or 7400 i know you can request that but I don’t know how safe that would be
@danimalshouse
@danimalshouse Жыл бұрын
The Livernois tune increases the RPM level for shifting at full throttle to 7,000RPM, which I have done, but it didn't help because at that level of engine speed my gas quality was maxed out using 91 or 93 octane fuel and I lost power and timing at the higher levels, making the change counter productive. With E85 though, it was wonderful and totally helped. My advise after going through it would be to stick with the 6,500rpm shift point unless you want the best time possible and you are going to race it. Then, I'd do the performance tune, shift at 7,200, and run E85 gas. You'll notice a difference when the RPM's are higher when you have the right tune and the right gas but if you are planning on 91 or 93 octane you will be less than impressed with the performance tune like I was. Good luck!

I don't have the data to support that recommendation. My opinion is that it will not do any harm to run the truck engine up to 7,200rpm, which is higher than the stock 6,500 limit but I am not an engineer or have any real data to support my opinion. If I was going to a race track and wanted to get the fastest time possible, while being willing to take some risk of being wrong about it being safe for all engine components, I'd run clear E85 fuel with the performance tune and run it to 7,200rpm for the max HP in all gears. You know, I'm not sure about the rev limiter but I know that the speed limiter is removed. I wonder if we are talking about the same thing. For me, the rev limiter is when you are in park and step on the gas the truck will go limp around 4k rpm since there isn't any load. I have had the truck at 120mph once but stopped there because the tires are not rated for any higher than that. I believe without the tune I could only go 105mph but actually am not sure about that.
