I am happy to see that small sample size testing is starting to receive scrutiny. There are so many variables that affect group size it is impossible to isolate a single variable like barrel harmonics unless you also remove all of the uncontrolled variables imparted upon the system by the presence of the cranky meat wagon attached to the rifle.

Yes! Drives me nuts when people do ladder tests, accuracy tests with factory ammo, etc... and shoot one 3 shot group that looks better than the others and call it good. You really need 20-30 shot groups (overlapping 3 shot groups) to verify anything statistically. Thanks for pointing this out.

Actual barrel tuners absolutely 💯 work. Yes ive tried it. Over n over cold barrel hot barrel. Summer winter it absolutely works. Tgey tend to show more dramatic results w sporter barrels that whip more

Doesn't that create a gap between the barrel and brake which can build up in deposits and cause more accuracy issues?

Now show the variation in your ES and SD in all your groups. If the variation in your load is as large as the variation in group size, all you proved is that the variables in your ammo equals the variation in group size. The tuner will only show consistency if the tuner adjustment is the only variable being changed.

May be in the comments already; Its my observation that barrel harmonics are affected with .001 inch increments. Not half turns on a break. But, good conversation. Thanks

What is needed is a large sample size study of the performance of rifle tuners. Take a barrel mounted in a rigid firing rig in an indoor 100yd range. Use laser sensors to measure barrel temperature. Break in the barrel with 200+ rounds before testing. Then fire statistically significant groups across an array of tuner settings. Maintain barrel temp between sample groups within a chosen fixed range. Then plot group size vs tuner setting and perform statistical analysis to validate the results. The ammo used would need to be tightly controlled to avoid confounding variables. Barrel aging/wear and fouling/cleaning effects would be a challenge to isolate.

Barrel break in is a myth. Eric cortina asked a few barrel manufacturers concerning this and they told him that people kept asking for a "break in procedure" so they just came up with something to tell people. Sheesh

Testing wise for tuner to see if it actually does make a significant difference I think starting with a horrible grouping gun like 3 inch groups lol then run same group testing like u done here on it

I shot a tuner on rimfire last year.....after 4 months and thousands of rounds of shooting with a tuner I saw no appreciable improvement during that time. You would see the groups open up and close up, but without the tuner, the groups were just as good if not more consistent. A tuner is not the mage sauce. I no longer use a tuner.

In short range nbrsa we all test with 3 shots. If we find a node then it's a 5 shot group to verify it.

If you really want to "accurately" test anything and be able to extract any valuable data, you have to remove every other "removeable" variable that can adversely effect that data (like the human factor for example). Even a pro level F-class competition shooter is not as accurate as his or her rifle likely is.

First thing you must buy if you are testing for tuning is a lead sled and something that holds the rifle down , no shooter can be that accurate all the time without one. I installed a Harrells tuner/brake on my Rem 700 tactical 223 and previous my best 5 shot groups at 100 yds. were 5/8" now they are 3/8". Tuners do work but they only fine tune your shooting not make drastic changes in group sizes.
