Hey all. This was a pain in the butt to edit and took me such a long time to go over the material. The other day I came across this hilarious quote used by a boat owner as his sign off, “everything on your boat is broken - you just don’t know it yet”. It made me laugh out loud because I’m a new and relatively inexperienced owner of an old boat but I do know that there is always more to do and jobs are more often than not a bit more involved than seems at first. In the beginning I felt a bit inadequate because everyone else seemed to have such perfect boats but I stopped watching those channels 😂. Now I really love to see the reality of boat ownership (“a bit of violence and a lot of cursing” 😁). So, I enjoyed this video. I chuckled sympathetically during your struggles with the rudder and the damper, and chilled with you while you hiked in that glorious landscape. Sigh… perfect! ❤️

I used to have a power boat which would break every time I went on the water. Each time fixed an issue a new one would appear. Eventually the reverser broke, and I realized if I didn't fix it, then nothing else would break. For the whole season I couldn't reverse, but I didn't have to fix anything else.

As a mechanical engineer, your video quality (i.e. explanations and expressions of uncertainty) were quite good. You have a healthy perception of what you know and know that you don't know. This is an exceptional talent in any profession. I, for one could take a lot more, but expect that I would be in the minority. Overall though, well presented.

Juho, there are a heap of sailing channels doing boat work videos. You don't need to do them as well. They do get boring after a while. However, there is one thing that you and Sohvi are doing that the majority are not, and that is sailing way up north in a much colder and more hostile environment. Do us all a favour and bring us more videos of you and Sohvi's journeys and adventures, into the north. I am getting tired of the Bahamas and Caribbean. It's time for some channels to show us other places in the world, which is what you are doing. So do what you do best, which is explore the north and also the snowfields for some skiing videos. You are both doing a great job and I find your videos very entertaining, well, that is until you spend too much time talking to the camera when we could have Sohvi taking the camera a bit more. Now that would be good.

As long as the trailing strut is round it will not affect the directional control. If it has any form that is less than circular it will bias the direction (presumably straight). A circular strut will shed vortexes but should allow you full steering. A good aeronautical engineer will be able to validate this.

Like taking guesses on what will break next, or who will get sea sick, or if the repair will create a 20m turn radius or a 15, whomever wins gets a prize. This video had just enough detail to get us caught up without getting too boring for viewers who don’t care about the nuts and bolts of seafaring. hi Chris, yeah, that's one of the things i try to avoid (angle grinder without guard). That angle grinder was at the boat when we came and we haven't found the guard anywhere. it's a shame cause it's a neat battery-powered one

Yeah. A plumber I was working with persuaded me it was a good idea to dispense with the guard. Great for access but I should have known better. Was using it overhead in a dim spot... sure enough it bit my finger nicely. Now I’ve lost the silly guard!

I would have taken more than 2-months on just the rudders. Mainly due to the temperature 🌡🥶 👍💡on looking at the other flexplate (known good unit) 👍

Not a mariner, but an aviator, and enjoy getting educated on boats. I can see the value of having two engines ... aside from the obvious redundance ... because in this case it allowed you to compare the offending part with the good one from the other engine. I have had two engine failures in twin engine aircraft ... and the other one saved the day on both occasions! Further, both environments can be very dangerous ... and know that being 10,000 over the bottom of the ocean scares me far more than being 10,000 feet over land ... mainly because there aren't creatures in the intervening altitudes who are happy to have me for lunch! LOL. Good luck in your travels, and I will enjoy going along on those as well.

***** actually after looking more carefully at the water flow design from META I dont think my idea would benefit your vessel at all. The enclosed rudder frame area is unique to holding that shape and lessening it would allow too much cross water flow **** sorry for not looking closer. but it might help someone else. Here's a Rudder tip I got from my boats designer. Although im a single screw single rudder , i'm a steel hull vessel and heavy. On the trailing edge of the rudder at both the top & bottom corners It was suggested for me to round those corners, which I did , and the difference was very beneficial. I wish I could show you pics. It increased my turning accuracy in forward, especially at higher speeds ( 4-9 knots ) and in reverse when in tight spaces or docking it is smoother and you dont feel the ' wheel pull ' as much. Also it seems to have eased the work effort on the autopilot. If I had to gauge the improvement I would say 10% benefit and maybe more When looking at some other new designs and some Pelagic drawings I've seen something in that direction as well. Just some food for thought,,,, Fair Winds Friends !!

Dont throw away such a good material. You could have done 5 hour videos about all this story. If youre not into boat repair (you should) then focus on the results of thseese kind of problems. The stress and arguments they bring and how you resolve them. What were you eating during almost 3 months? How did you entertain yourself? What movies and tv shows did you wathch? Tells us about you during the problems. Let us to bond with you as frineds who cares. You dont like editing? ok do more reports on daily bases. 80 years old legend Mr Sven Yrvind is doing it and it works well. Sorry if i am critical but you asked for our opinion. Kisses

As an engineer, I always want to know more, but I have no problem with your descriptions of repairs. It's not a repair channel, it's a sailing channel. Your explanations are well presented and well documented. A very small gripe, though. I could do with a little less full screen talking head, and a little more camera on the subject with your voice over narration. It's not a criticism so much as a matter of style. On a large screen your head becomes very large and appears to challenge the viewers personal space :) Probably only me, though. I love your channel and I especially like seeing you and Sohvi working together. She's quiet, but her adventurous spirit shines through. You make a good team.

My experience in the trade, which is all my life, fixing things is really very easy, Its the diagnoses and knowing which part to fix is the hard part. Then the customer wants it done quick as possible at an affordable cost. Its a very hard equation to get right. Love your videos. Thank you.

As a Diesel technician, it's extremely difficult too repair another person mistakes. That could be the manufacturer engineer. You just have too build it better. Only way is trial and error. That's engineering!

Video was great,, easy to follow what you were doing with the damper plate, I know this as a pressure plate in vehicle engines. Nothing seems straight forward from diagnosis to fix thee is always a challenge attached, parts difficult to find etc. Really like you videos, not seen all of them but slowly going through them. You never said how the rudder worked. That is such a critical component for a sailing vessel. Using aluminum is a higher risk for failure. Stainless steel would have been better. You must have an unlimited budget for this boat.

Loved the burst of Levan Polka 😂 Unless your rudder shafts run in bronze plain bush type bearings polishing the shaft will only ease the installation. Im supprised at the size i assume thats because its designed for ice in water use. Thats a bugger when the transmission isnt up to the job its supposed to do. Was there any original builders spec. In the plans the second one just looked like a clutch plate.

I think you did a great job. It's interesting to watch the work and see how much space you have. Sailboats are always so cramped in the spaces where the moving parts live. Hope you get all the needed benefit from rudder rework after the protection frame is reinstalled. Smaller and rounder. Surely it will steer correctly now.

I think you did great sharing your experience nobody is a expert doing something there first time and trying to produce a how to video out of something your just learning seems misleading and foolish thanks for keeping it real 👍👍

Artika seems to have some real idiosyncratic aspects like the way the diesel tanks were setup, the somewhat dysfunctional rudder ice protection bracket frames, and now two different types of flywheel parts in the same type of engine-transmission linkage. As time is used to repair or replace these funky installations seems fair to incur a reduced lease or rental payment as the boat needs work that takes a lot of time. The lighthouse front yard made me remember sleep walking as a boy - wouldn't want to fall off the cliff in front of the lighthouse.
