In greece the easiest way to root a fig cutting is to bury a little branch in the place we want to grow the tree and leave only the tip above the ground.Another great video

Great video! I learned some new tricks. Last year I put about 4” of sand from off my driveway into two ice chests. I took a bunch of cuttings form my celest and stuck the cuttings in at an angle, almost laying down. Did the same with a Chicago hardy. I lightly moistens the sand, closed the lids and forgot about them till spring. When I checked on them there were roots everywhere and a few leaves too. Put ‘em in pots and mostly solo cups. The bigger pots grew much faster. Planted all of them when the roots started coming out of the holes. Some even had fruit the first year. It didn’t ripen but I was impressed that they fruited. Perhaps parafilm on the ends and root hormones will boost my success rate.

Will be looking forward to your sale ,would like another variety to go with it. Something not to similar ......

Probably just rust or dormancy. I wouldn't worry about it a whole lot. If you're wanting something completely different than Conadira, might want to try a honey fig variety like LSU Gold or White Marseilles. Both are pretty fast growers like the Conadria.

@Lazy Dog Farm If you put a black, metal containers of water in the hot spots, it will absorb the extra heat and release it slowly. If you use a long container, the heat will spread out faster. On an unrelated note, will this work for other fruit trees?

COULD YOU PUT LARGE WATER CONTAINERS ON THE HOT END TO KEEP IT WARMER AT NIGHT IN GREEN HOUSE ? Can you graft one kind of FIG to different kind of fig tree like you can STONE FRUIT TREES .
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
You might could do that. I have a little space heater that keeps it plenty warm on nights when it gets down in the 30s here. You can graft one tree onto another. I've seen folks do multiple grafts on a single tree and have a tree that produces multiple varieties on the same tree. Some growers also do grafting for varieties that are really slow to grow initially. Black Madeira is one that is commonly grafted onto another variety that's more fast-growing.

You might be over thinking it. I cut off 2 different 12inch end pieces, one from each of my fig trees, and stuck both of them into a pot full of potting soil and let em ride! I did this last May! They both have fruit on them right now. I tried all that paraffin wax and rooting hormone BS last year, it was all a waste! Just stick with the minimalistic method, it always works!

@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
If you're using a 12" long cutting, you have many more nodes in the soil which means a higher chance of success. If I did 12" cuttings, I wouldn't have many trees. I've done some side-by-side testing with and without the hormone and tape and they both significantly increase rooting success with smaller cuttings. But if your tree is large enough to take a larger cutting like that, go for it.

@LazyDogFarm

They all get rust. Just part of growing figs. You can spray them with a fungicide in late winter before they start adding new leaves, and again before they start putting on fruit. That helps to reduce the amount of rust you'll get, but nothing to really stop the rust completely.
