I did it. Got down to 935mV on a 3090 FE 1950 MHz. I didn’t mess with it for more than 20 minutes was satisfied with lower temperatures. The undervolt also shortens the steps the clocks shift up to so you end up with your higher speed more often with less heat. This was excellent. Afterburner also lets you save presets so you can lower the voltage even further on those less demanding games with just a few clicks to revert to better stability in demanding titles.

Best undervolting guide by far, clearly explains how to change the settings for any graphics card instead of a specific card. My 1070 ran at 140-150 watts. got it down to 110-120 watts. same fps. Temps are lower. can lower my fan speeds and have lower temps than before. Thank you.

An easier - though less precise - way to undervolt is to reduce the power limit in Afterburner and then use the OC Scanner tool to sniff out the best OVERclock for that power setting. Keep nudging the power limit down and benchmarking each time until you come back to stock performance, then... that's it - stock performance for reduced power, and AB has done all the stability testing for you😁.

I've been doing this to my 3060 Ti ever since I got it on launch. When I play old games that are easy to run I do an undervolt and underclock combination. So I set it 731mV at 1620 MHz clock. The temps are so low and it sips less than 100W of power. It's so good it can even play modern titles at 1440p no problem. Now when I want to play at 4K for more modern games I set it at 950mV at 2010MHz. Yes it's a combination of an undervolt and an overclock! Since the power limit of my card is 240W, high power usage games will have lower clocks but with the 950mV I can reach higher clocks at the same or lower power usage.

I’ve been undervolting now since my GTX900 series GPU and every generation since. Here in Australia 🇦🇺 where electricity is expensive and I spend a number of hours a day gaming … I’ve found a small electricity bill saving, but in terms of temps (as we get hot summers here) a noticeable difference in long term run times has seen 10-15c (10-15 degrees Celsius) reduction and a much quieter system which is what I prefer. 🥰🥰👍

Undervolt+small OC is the best combo, on my RX 6800XT I managed to get core clocks to hit stable 2400mhz and memory to hit 2100mhz with fast timings enabled, 1025mv from stock being 1150. Overall gained a few fps and watts dropped by 40-50 in very gpu heavy games, and about 70-80 in moderately gpu heavy games, I have a MSI trio model so the cooler is already quite beefy, temps are 50-60C on current/edge gpu temp and 65-75C on gpu hotspot, fans are quiet 1600-1800 rpm aswell. Since the hotspot is so low in temps the gpu just will just 24/7 boost to 2400mhz core and 2100mhz mem, could prolly make it higher with more tweaking but I am perfectly happy with my results

I would like to correct one thing : Those cards must work with lower voltage. It's right in the V/F curve of the card how far it's rated for any given voltage, and ALL these point had to be checked for stability in factory (at least that's how I think it's done ?). As for why no manufacturer does this : It's not because "card will get unstable", it's because "performance drops too much [vs. competition]", or "MHz aren't high enough, so let's not do that [when using NV guidelines]. GPUs can be made to work at lower stock voltages, they simply can't be clocked as high on them. Personally, I would love GPUs to be run at stock with 0.7V for big die, and 0.8V for smaller ones (both on lower clockspeeds than today), BUT with additional "OC" option that raises voltage by additional +0.1V or +0.2V value IF user want's to go over that (and is informed about risks [higher power usage, hotter GPU, etc.] with proper on screen warning).

You should not be doing the -200 to -300 on your curve as it will actually INCREASE the voltage required for lower clock speeds. This is messing up strictly by being lazy. Just use the voltage points for set clock speeds and don't touch the previous lower end of the graph (better yet INCREASE it on the Y axis to ask for higher clock speeds for lower voltage usage).

Im shocked. I undervolted my 6900xt sapphire nitro se for better temps. I was pushing 86 degrees on 4k full load on games (even 1080p on very demanding games). But then I undervolted to 2400 mhz and 1140 voltage and POOF. Thermals around 69-74 degrees on FULL load. Holy hell. My fps is basically the same. It runs in many cases up to 15 degrees cooler. The wattage went down from 280-320 watts to 190-210 watts. Im so glad I did this the first day of this GPU. It will lengthen its lifespan and make it much more of a long term investment. It did take some driver crashes and system reboots but I'm so glad I stick with it. These settings work on 4K cyberpunk and Kingdom come deliverance. It is stable on these games which probably means it is stable on all games.

The problem with your method is that you lower the entire curve, which you most wouldn't want/need. The initial part of the curve is fine to keep stock. You simply want to set your desired max voltage with your desired frequency. Then, ensure that every point after that (to the right) is lower (by any amount) than the aforementioned desired max voltage. By having the points to the right of your voltage lower by any amount, they will automatically be set to level with your desired voltage, meaning that the curve peaks at your desired voltage.

I've been tweaking with both undervolting and over clocking my RTX 3060. I ended up finding the sweetest balance when I maxed out my power draw overhead +6% and dropped my core curve -225. I then grabbed the 937mV point in the curve editor and raised it to the 2040 Mhz point and applied its value. Then I overclocked my GDDR6 memory +859 mhZ which brought it to 8360MhZ memory clock. Get this... All my performance gains and my temps at 99% Gpu utilization were 62 degrees C and my power draw was still 5 to 9 watts below stock max(170 watts). Undervolting and overclocking allowed me to get an entirely new beast of a card out of my GPU, all while running constant(no throttling) and running cool! Im going to create another preset and see how far down I can take the curve and how far up I can go on core and memory. Right now my current record is +290 Mhz core overclock and +875Mhz memory increase.

Thanks for making this guide! Why haven't I tried this before with MSI Afterburner? I'm already thermal-throttling my dual RTX 3090 Ti workstation at 65'C and power limiting each card at 300W for the sake of longevity, efficiency, and safer system temperatures; but I wonder if undervolting on top of that will help regain some lost performance and then some... Addendum: I decided to relax the thermal limit to 85'C, which appears reasonable for an Ampere GPU under heavy load. I was able to run both RTX 3090 Ti cards around 1920 MHz (the default boost frequency) @ 875 mV with a fixed 67% fan speed at a steady-state temperature of about 75'C on a Time Spy Extreme 3DMark stress test. I use MSI Afterburner's auto scan settings to set the voltage curve, then I pick a spot on the curve and start levelling it off till I get the power consumption I want, typically around the core boost clock. My Geforce 3050 uses only 83 watts of power under load (vs. about 135 stock), but it has about 96 percent the performance of stock voltage. Since I have an ancient case with just one Noctua NFS12A exhaust fan, that leads to much lower case temperatures under load, as well as much lower noise. The noisiest thing in my case is my GPU, but it's fan is stuck at 1/3 speed idle, so not much can be done about that.

That frequency - voltage graph is doing my head in. At 4:08 the video is saying that voltage is set to 950mV; with the voltage along the x-axis. Meanwhile the graph is showing the straight line at 1900MHz, while voltage runs x-axis all the way to 1250mV. To be accurate, the line on the graph should stop at x=950mV, and y=1900MHz. If you notice my other comment on this page, is dated three months ago. Hence it's taken me this long to work out why I don't understand how to undervolt. It's because the graph makes no sense. It's because I came back determined to understand undervolting, that I worked out my confusion with this graph.

Ye the graph in afterburner can be kinda confusing, basically the way it works is like this: you downclock the frequency by 200mhz, then raise the 0.950v keypoint on the curve up to certain frequency, lets say 1900mhz, by doing that you tell the gpu to use up to 0.950v max for that specific frequency and since it becomes a flatline at 1900mhz mark, it means the gpu doesn't need to increase the voltage anymore for such frequency... The only kinda issue with this metod is that when you underclock the curve by 200mhz, you're literally overvolting everysingle frequency below the 0.950v mark, if you see the graph, the gpu will use a higher voltage than stock at low frequencies, still it shouldn't impact negatively since those voltages will still be lower than 0.950v...

@@ArgStyleRlz Am not sure I agree. I noticed something else wrong with this guide, for two reasons. 1. By dropping the graph at 2:52, you would be overvolting all frequencies under your chosen 950mV in this graph 3:55. 2. There would be a significant step up in voltage at the point of 950mV. I continued to look for guides and eventually decided on the following: Take you graph line with shift and mouse click. At your chosen voltage e.g. 950mV, drag the graph 'up' to your chosen max frequency. From the chosen voltage, level off the graph so the frequency doesn't go above your chosen max frequency. (That way you will undervolt all frequencies of your card.)

I'm very new to this undervolting so wanted to know what was the math/logic there with the boost clock of 1.73 GHz, the base clock being 1.5 GHz, and then pulling your GPU's rate down about 290-300 Mhz? To go a little bit under the base clock?
@agnosticpanda6655

...Why would you pull the curve down and effectively overvolt you card for the lower clock ranges? This will just make the card hotter and draw more power whenever you're not fully utilizing it.

I undervolted my gtx 1660 roughly a year ago. shortly before i had done so, i had learned of an amazing hardware monitoring tool that showed me information about about my card and system that i had i never imagined my card would be doing. this software showed me GPU performance limits that would reduce the gpu from maximum performance due to reaching their limits. the thing i found very odd was that limits in place by the manufacture were substantially lower than you would expect. the two limiters i found triggering these where of course power and temp. the temp limit for example was throttling my gpu around 70c degrees. this of course was drastically dropping my performance in games for years and i couldnt figure out why until i found HWiNFO64. after looking into how to either raise these limiters in place by the manufacturer or completely remove them altogether, i found that it apparently wasnt possible. i then discovered undervolting, which turned out to be the biggest win win win i could ever dream of. not only have i been able to prevent these limiters from activating, i am drastically saving power and extending the life of my card by running at much cooler temps. this has prevented the insanely frustrating frame drops and has made my bizarre poor mans rig something to enjoy despite certain hardware components being over a decade old.

Umm, can you please explain the point of the first step, i.e. pulling down the core clock? By doing so the voltage/clock ratio shifts in the opposite direction IMO. In my case, on a RTX2080S, base core frequency without touching it: 1650MHz@843mV. After under-clocking by 300MHz: 1650MHz@1037mV. Isn't that the exact opposite of what we want? What I do, I just reset everything to stock, run some benchmark and check at what voltage the GPU runs under load. In my case 1043mV (1920MHz). Then I open the curve editor and push the 1043mV slider up until the benchmark starts crashing, around 2010-2020 MHz. Last but not least, I try if allowing a bit more juice can stabilize the performance. So I ended up with 2025MHz@1050mV. I am not touching anything else, only that one 1050mV slider in the curve editor. Works since 2014 :-)

Yes the dragging down the core clock method first is a complete dogshit method that all these KZbinrs use. Annoying how hard it is to find the correct way to undervolt.
@janwichta1755
@janwichta1755 Жыл бұрын
@@sterlingarcher7101 Well I have to admit that using this method helped to make my clocks more stable. I was puzzled by this behavior for quite some time as it makes no sense really... until recently 😀 The key here is to make the curve to the right side of your target frequency completely flat. Otherwise the GPU core tends to jump to the next highest frequency when under load. In a real life scenario you may end up with this: Your target clock is 1980MHz @ 900mV > But the curve continues to ascend slightly so you also have 2070MHz @ 1250mV. Under peak loads the GPU will try to jump to that higher clock but hits the power limit. So you end up with high peak clocks but a low average. The step of underclocking first with the main core clock slider helps to mitigate this as you pull the whole curve below the target frequency and when you then raise a single curve slider somewhere in the middle, the right hand side of the curve is straight flat. This works but is a dirty solution. The really correct way (when you know the target voltage/frequency)is: 1) Open the curve editor and check the default frequency at the target voltage. 2) Adjust the main core clock slider so that you get the desired frequency at the given voltage. 3) Now go back to he curve and pull every single slider to the right of the target down so that the resulting curve is entirely flat (between 900mV & 1250mV in my case). This way you don't get that steep part in the curve, so you're not overvolting the left hand side ;-). I know that this procedure requires quite some patience but it's definitely the correct way 🙂

Should you undervolt even if your temps are not a problem? Wondering if I should undervolt my Sapphire Toxic 6900XT which is liquid cooled. It uses a whopping 430W of power so maybe extra efficiency is worth the nominal performance drop even if temps aren't a problem?
@theatheistbear3117
@theatheistbear3117 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, because a cooler GPU will have fewer issues with performance drops when it does turn hot and increase the lifespan of your GPU. Usually GPU manufacturers push the hardware to what it can just about tolerate and no more. An undervolted GTX 1070 would be around the equivalent to a regular non-undervolted GTX 1660, with better thermals. It’s also worthwhile if you want to add extra stuff to your PC that uses a lot of power

When you are supplying less power to any electronic device it lowers the degradation time of that device. Example, if you lower power supply to a table fan then it starts spinning slow. However in case of advanced components like graphics card there is a point where you can maintain stability and performance even after limiting the power supply.

In my case, it's not a question of should or will I but rather I think I have to. I'm building a budget AI Home Server with an older Dell T5500 (old PC with decent CPU & 96GB RAM) and 2x Nvidia Tesla P40 24GB GPU's and saving 100+ Watts and reducing heat is a must, besides already having a lot of airflow as they are passive cards. Besides, the GPU performance loss is marginal and mostly I just need the VRAM.. GPU utilization is not as much of a factor with tensor cores and AI. Thanks for the overview and suggestions, this will be my weekend project. PS. If anyone else is interested, on eBay a T5500 is about $90, P40's about $200 (x2 for me), CPU "Upgrade" $10, and 96GB RAM Kit $30. I also added a $200 16TB HDD ($12.5/TB, amazing on Newegg) and 512GB SSD ($22 Amazon). So about $750 for all but more than half was for GPU's and you don't necessarily need 2. Hit me up if you have any questions or are interested in running AI on local hardware, it be cool to collaborate and maybe even load-balance API's (for a decentralized service).
