Gidday Guys,
In this DaVinci resolve 16 and resolve 17 and 18 quick tip, I will show you how to super-scale or up-res your video files into any desired resolution size the correct way.
There wont be much theory in this video its pretty straight forward but if you are wanting to learn whats happening under the hood of the resolve engine, you can do that here:
• How to SUPER SCALE HD ...
Either video will teach you how to upres you footage the correct way in DaVinci Resolve 17.
DaVinci Resolve Studio 17 features over 100 GPU and CPU accelerated Resolve FX in categories such as blurs, light effects, noise, image restoration, beauty enhancement, stylize and more! Version 17 adds 11 new plugins for texture pop, detail recovery, creating video collages, 3D keyer, HSL keyer, luma keyer, smear, motion trails, noise reduction, image transforms and false color. The video collage plug-in is perfect for picture in picture zoom style videos, virtual choirs and more! There are also improvements to the object removal, dead pixel fixer, dust buster, blur and film grain plug‑ins. All Resolve FX can be animated using the new unified inspector on the cut, edit and Fusion pages
The color page lets you manipulate color in creative and artistic ways that dramatically affect the mood of a scene, making it an incredibly powerful part of the storytelling process. Whether you’re a student, online creator or professional Hollywood colorist, you get hundreds of artistic tools in an easy to learn node based interface that makes experimenting with color fast and exciting! You get support for a huge range of formats, including wide color gamut and HDR images, along with DaVinci’s legendary 32‑bit image processing for high quality, professional results. You can balance and match footage from different sources to create stunning, unique images that are impossible on other systems
The edit page is designed to be easy and intuitive for new users, yet powerful enough to give professional editors all the tools and control they need! You get drag and drop editing for quickly building a story and moving shots around, as well as traditional three point editing tools used by industry editors. Plus, DaVinci Resolve is faster because it features an automatic trim cursor that changes depending where you click in the timeline, so you don’t have to waste time continually going back and forth changing tools. The edit page also includes dozens of transitions, effects and titles that make it easy to create professional work for broadcast television, feature films and online streaming

Great video. Very slick and good to see another Aussie out there having a crack. I’m in Sydney. Where are you based? Re this topic, the opportunities are massively being missed. Firstly, if you shoot 1080p because you want to shoot 120fps. Most cameras don’t offer 4K 120fps. Think weddings. Huge! Secondly, remastering old home videos shot 20 or 30 years ago. I’ve got a stack I want to do myself. Hence I’m checking out the best workflow and seems to render much quicker in v.17 of DVR from what I hear. So I will probably need to break my home videos up into bite size chunks and potentially consolidate the files i output, then do the render. But I also interview people about their life stories. So using old footage as b roll fits in beautifully. It also opens up business opportunities around remastering.

Thanks for walking us through that! If someone wanted to crop in on a 1080 clip in a 1080 timeline, would super scaling help at all? It seems like it should, but I'm not sure if that would just make my export go slower. I guess the best way to find out is to just try it myself. :)
@EntrNmHre

It will absolutely make the 1080 shot sharper and yes you are right you can use it to crop your footage, but you may also have to change some of your project settings to achieve the desired cropped result.

Thanks. This is huge for folk on a budget! So, Studio version is required. Do you know the minimum computer specs needed to cope with this upres process to prevent crashing? Obviously it demands a lot more CPU/GPU power as you indicated in the slowing down of playback. But to fully render? Thanks again

Good tip! I also do this sometimes, but it depends on the source footage file type and the system I am using - sometimes the conversion + the upscale just wastes too much editing time. Once in Prores though, its like butter...

Apparently this only works with Davinci Resolve Studio, not the free version. It seemed to run on my free version but put an overlay that said it was STUDIO but I think it was the regular stretch method. I was trying to upgrade a video size 400x224 that was sent to me for a presentation they are doing. I used the standard stretch and that will have to do.

Yes, you do need the studio version, sorry for that confusion. Its well worth the money, I paid once in 2010 and it cost me 1000 AUD, now its only 295 dollars or in your case free, which is cheaper than Topaz AI up-scaler and comes for free with most of Blackmagic's cameras. But listen even if you buy the studio version, don't expect to edit while upscaling footage. It's a massive resource hog.

@@EntrNmHreThanks for the clarification, but the Studio version isn't free. I believe the price in the US is about $299.99 USD while in Canada it is $399.99 CAD. If there is aa way of getting it for free, I'd love to hear how.

Hi Ted, yes I remember the last time I was in Canada, the old Aussie and Canadian dollars don't go far against the greenback. You can get resolve studio for free if you purchase a Blackmagic design cinema camera, studio panel and some other hardware devices. For example here in France, what a lot of cats do is buy a pocket cinema 4k camera, activate the resolve key and then sell the camera slightly cheaper unused, which means in the end they pay around 100 bucks for the software. But buy the software, it well worth it for all the features. I still cant believe that BMD even gives away a free copy, imagine if adobe did that.

Hey mate thanks for reaching out. I think that the Canon Eos 200 would be a great entry level camera. To be honest with you, the camera you use doesnt make the work professional, its more about how you use the tools. But if you are just beginning and want to make your work stand out faster a better Full Frame camera would be a better choice in the long run. I still buy used cameras to this day and that way I get much better equipment much cheaper. Reach out if you have any other questions.

@@jeremyclark4563 Resolve by default will reconform your frame rates for you to whatever you set in your project settings as your base master timeline Frame Rate. So if you need to deliver at 30P, set that and it should all be good. You do not need to reconform or do stringouts to change frame rates in resolve. For editing speed set your timeline to 1080 and then before export choose your deliverable export setting for resolution. Your time base will fix the rest.

Surely, the process of grading is affected by super scaling, right? If I do all my correction, grading, grain, noise reduction at 1080, THEN superscale, if have to go through and do it again
@EntrNmHre

Unless you are doing super intensive ROTO and trackers, with super complicated animated masks for VFX , I highly doubt it. Even then, you would have to change something like your aspect ratio from like 16:9 native to say 17:9 native to have a problems. Buy why would you do that. For your grades its more about the bit depth and the data rate over the resolution size.

Thanks for the updated "quick tip" video. So we need to activate super scaling BOTH on the clip in the timeline (through clip attributes) AND in the project settings page? I've seen some videos by other youtubers and they seemed to imply that activating super scaling on the clip timeline was enough.
@EntrNmHre
@EntrNmHre 3 жыл бұрын
Hi MREP, You can either use super scale as the initial upscale (instead optical method in the clip inspector) or you can do it at a project level in the project settings. If you use this instead of the clip inspector it will bog your computer down useless you make proxies, activate render cache. For absolutely the best results / system performance, I would right click the clips and use clip attributes to superscale at the end of the edit. I would use the clip inspector setting to optically resize the shots during the edit. If you wanted absolutely the most out of resolve / worst performance playback and render you can do the superscale on both a timeline/project level and also at a clip level.
