I have a rv trailer. The bathroom fan stopped working. I replaced the motor. The new motor is not working. There is a switch on the fan. I bypassed the switch and connected directly to the incoming wires. The fan still doesn’t work. How do I know if it’s the motor, the switch or if I even have incoming power?

What if my multimeter seems like it jumps to near the correct reading then instantly falls down to 0 and the wire doesn't shock me when i touch it?

that just means there is not a good connection between the probe and the wire, likely due to corrosion. you should NOT touch this wire! if the circuit is unenergized you will see NOTHING change on the multimeter when probing it.

Safety glasses protect your eyes from sparks and debris.

but you knew which one was ground, I understand black should be ground, but this tutorial doesn't really help if you have unknown wires and need to find the voltage or lack thereof.

If you don't know what wire is ground, you can just touch the probe to something that is grounded like the junction box. Then touch the other probe to one of the wires to measure the voltage.

You will get 0 volts with the power off. If you want to test what the voltage is with power on, the power needs to be on. To get the wires out like shown, turn off power first and be sure the wires aren't touching. Do not let others around the wires, especially kids.

test first to get the power on reading and then switch off and test to see no reading, then you can think the power is off if you see the change. if no change, you still have power.

What would happen if you touched any of those wires with your bare hands?

The worst thing you can do is connect one hand on live and the other on one of the other wires. You would get 240v across your heart and possibly die. If you touch the live with your right only then electricity will pass into the ground and not go through your heart. Still, it will hurt like hell and you would need to go to the hospital to check your heart signals
