Love your videos! I have a Campbell-Hausfeld compressor almost exactly like yours. Got it at Montgomery Ward back in the early ‘80’s and it still works great! I jumpered it to run on 240v (it only draws 7.5 amps @ 240v). That way, I can use it with my 10/3 240v extension cord without tripping the breaker. I’ve kept the oil fresh and just recently installed new reed valves and gaskets. Starts easy and runs smooth & quiet. It’ll probably outlive me!

I got that at auto zone cause it came with a cheap foam filter. It's just an air filter for an old souped up carburetor, they had it on the shelf. Fit perfectly with a little elbow grease.,

Dave is a professional mechanic. Just because he doesn't have the fancy tools that expensive shops have doesn't mean he is inept at fixing cars. He fixes cars for a living, among other things. Dave takes enough pride in his work to not only do the work but show OTHERS how to do it. That is highly commendable. Also, do you realize that automobile manufacturers don't always take account the ease of repairs? They make it hard so that you end up taking it to a dealership shop. It's called business.

Scotty I have the 8 gallon Harbor Freight air compressor and I’ve used it along with their 9 dollar paint gun to paint stuff. It works really well. Just remember to put some Teflon tape on the cups threads and to dilute the oil paint with paint thinner and you will never go back to paint cans. The first time you use the pint gun it’s a bit of a hassle because you have to get used to the controls and it has a few. Once you know them, it’s a synch to use.

Hello Scotty, I just got a new 8 gallon/2hp, 125psi Husky compressor for Christmas. I just bought my 1st air tool. A Cambell Haufield impact wrench for about $30 at Home Depot. When using this tool for lug nuts, does the impact wrecnh have the torque to loosen the nuts with the tire off the ground or do you loosen em with the tire still on the ground to prevent tire spin?
@Liamautomechanic12 жыл бұрын

Hi Scotty, When I was braking and the car was about the stop completely, I heard some grinding noise (low pitch) and i can feel vibration in the brake pedal. It only happens at the instant when It comes to a complete stop or releasing the brake from stopping. Is the problem about the brake or the suspension ? The noise comes from the front wheel on the driver side i think. Thanks a lot!

Craigslist is a good place to buy a compressor. I paid $125 about five years ago for a 33 gal. Craftsman. Testing that it can hold pressure and run a tool then verifying that it can drain without a lot of rusty condensation is important.

I recently saw a small electric air compressor (pancake?) in one of your videos. I am having trouble finding it again. Can you tell me the name of it? Thanks.
@edwardcrane41997 жыл бұрын
Hey Scotty, nice video, but I have the exact same compressor, and you absolutely must not use a low quality extension cord with it, or it will not start up after the first cycle. If someone has problems with the compressor not starting up after the initial fill, they should try it without the extension cord, or with a higher quality extension cord. For that matter, be sure that the wiring you are using it with is correct. I learned this the hard way when I was trying to paint my car, and mid-way through the first spray the compressor refused to fill the tank back up. I had tested everything out in my garage the day before, but when I rolled the unit to the paint booth I had to use the extension cord, and I got stuck in the middle of the paint job with a compressor that would start. Very frustrating and causes you to make painting mistakes. So, DON'T USE CHEAP EXTENSION CORDS or don't use extension cords at all if you can help it.
@dtrrtd7747 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the HF compressor have an unloader valve setup? A friend at work was complaining about the same thing, and I figured it must have been defective or was using a undersized extension cord, as you mention. He said he actually had to let out the air to restart it. If the design has the pump trying to start up against the built up air pressure without an unloader, the current requirement for startup goes up tremendously.
@edwardcrane41997 жыл бұрын
yes, it does have an unloader valve, yet it still requires significant current to compress air against pressurized air when cold.

Question.... What's portable, small, but very strong? That I could buy that would change nuts on tires and pump air? At a good price.
@matthewmolburg12 жыл бұрын
Yeah every regular tool I have seen so far calls for 90 psi. There are other tools that use more, I have seen one that took 120 psi at 8+ SCFM but I can't remember what it was. It was definatly a specialty tool that most people would never use. Also, when you adjust the output valve on the compressor go a little higher than 90 psi. If you set it right at 90 when you hit the trigger it usually drops about 10 psi. I set my gauge at 100 and under "load" it runs right at 90.

I paid $40 for my craftsman impact (400 ft. lbs.), $35 for my Campbell Hausfeld (CH) air ratchet (50 ft. lbs.) and $15 for my CH air hammer. All work great. My compressor is a 3.5hp 20 gal. CH, with 6.6 SCFM @90 psi. Most standard air tools require between 5-6 SCFM @ 90 psi. If you find that your air tools lack power, your hose may be too long. Upgrade to a 1/2in. hose or a 3/8in. hose no longer than 25 ft.

Will the porter cable air compressor tank be enough to do struts, coil springs etc? I'm looking to buy a compressor so I can work on my car and I was just wondering what is an ideal amount of psi, gal, voltage, etc?

you want at least 90 psi andat least 16 gallons and of course 220 volt systems are stronger and use less electricity
