I would like to use my iPad to trigger a (wifi enabled) DSLR camera that we would position near a bird feeder in our back yard. Can you suggest an app that would let me use my iPad to see what my DSLR is seeing and then trigger the camera remotely to take a photo? (By the way, I have not yet purchased the DSLR that I would use--I want to make sure I get one that would work with the app I seek.)

Hi Thomas. This was very interesting to me because I am an astrophotographer and while I have software which will control my mount and other related tech aspects (the mount will slew to anywhere in the sky I wish it to), I also have another rig which does not allow computer control but which can track the stars and I can make fine adjustments to keep targets in the FOV. Now, here's my question (because this would be invaluable and I know it COULD be done - whether it is or not, I don't know): Would it be possible to superimpose a variable sized (determined by you) crosshair (preferably a double crosshair) on the view you look at on the ipad, so that, over a long exposure time (seconds to minutes - perhaps up to 30 mins), one could vary where that crosshair is placed on the ipad screen (the central portion of the crosshair may just be a few pixels in width (or diameter) such that one could place the crosshair over a single star and, by keeping an eye on it, one could then adjust (using directional buttons on the mount handset) to keep that star in the centre portion of the crosshair? Being able to do so would mean I could use my telescope anywhere, in any location, and make precise tracking adjustments to ensure I got pin point results whilst taking long exposures when, otherwise, errors in my mount and its set up would, over long exposures, create star trailing in the image. Hope this makes sense.

Technically, this video is describing how to remote control your camera with an app, which is not the same as using your tablet as an external monitor. A video capture card (or adapter) is actually the best approach if you are truly wanting to use your iPad/Android tablet as a true external monitor. With remote control, the view you see on the tablet does not look like your Canon camera's screen. It looks like the remote control app's interface and just projects the through-the-lens video feed from the camera lens into the app's interface. Using video capture, you can literally see an exact copy of what you see in your camera's viewfinder or live view screen, including all of the native on-screen information overlays, real-time autofocus points, eye tracking and face detection activity, etc., fully mirrored onto the iPad/Android tablet. That is now truly using your iPad/Android tablet as an external monitor, and it's also very easy to set up!

Thank you! Works perfectly with my 550D and you have no idea of how helpfull is this for me and for astrophotography. First, you can focus on a big screen, in a comfortably position, without to lay down on ground to watch the camera monitor, then you can access to all the parameters and very important it does have an intervallometer to allow multiple poses to stack in software the day after the session. Thank you!

@@davidkocherhans9971 Easy to set up? Can you explain further? :)
@davidkocherhans9971 Жыл бұрын
@WillKozushko I have four components in my setup, 1) micro HDMI to standard HDMI adapter plugged into my camera's micro HDMI output port, 2) connect standard HDMI cable from this adapter's output to, 3) capture card input, which is just a simple adapter device with standard HDMI input and USB-C output that performs the critical function of capturing the HDMI video signal and transforming it to standard USB video stream, which can then be plugged in to 4) any iPad or Android tablet running a USB/OTG video viewing app to view the incoming USB video signal. I prefer the "nExt Camera" app for Android, but there are dozens of apps available on both iOS and Android platforms that perform this function. The micro HDMI adapter and capture "card" (which just looks like an HDMI to USB-C adapter, but has the capture card built in) are readily available on Amazon from dozens of vendors.

@@davidkocherhans9971 THX for the quick response. I have an older 4th gen ipad (capped out with iOS v10.3.4, I think) and an iphone 6s plus, both with lightning ports. I'd love to re-purpose either, or both, as simple video monitors for my Canon T5i. After all of the googling around that I have done, I'm not confident that it's as simple as using a "usb-c to lightning plug" adapter to connect the chain that you have described to either device. Do you know if that would work?
@davidkocherhans9971 Жыл бұрын
@@KOZMOGRAFX Unfortunately, I don't have any experience using lightning as the final step in that chain, but I suspect a simple USB-C to lightning adapter won't get the job done (as you mention). When I started the Camera Connect and Control app I was unable to connect my Canon R5 to my iPad Pro via the USB-C to Thunderbolt cable. I started with my R5 turned off and with the cable connected between the R5 and iPad Pro. Then I opened the CC & C app followed by turning on the R5. When I tapped on the USB circle nothing happened. Then I disconnected the cable and tapped on the Bluetooth circle in CC &C. When I did that the app did connect briefly but disconnected a fraction of a second later. I tried to purchase the app but it said that one has to connect the camera at least once before purchasing was possible. Finally I read a comment in this thread saying that the iPad Pro will connect to the camera using the Canon Camera Connect program. That worked beautifully so I use that app instead.
