This is the first review I've seen that goes into detail about all of the other features, and they're not horrible. With this said, I imagine that there are going to be tons of these ending up in landfills because they were stolen or sold without unlinking. I'd be curious to see if anyone has hacked these yet. One potential issue is that if someone in the area decides to jam or deauth bluetooth devices, an attack like that could render these useless while the attack is in progress. Imagine going to a large jobsite where everyone is using this platform and instantly shutting it all down. When you introduce wireless authentication, you accept the risk that said device can be screwed with remotely. I wonder how long DeWalt will release security updates for these devices, and if the app will continuously be available and usable during the lifetime of said tools. Once you create a "smart" device, you have to commit to supporting it for a long time.

If you lost it, you must be near it to find it with the aid of it's bluetooth connectivity. Your distance could either be 100 meters to a maximum distance of 1000 meters outdoor for bluetooth version 5. If it's a case of theft, it's more likely a hopeless case because the thief would be gone many kilometers away before you know about the lost.

How does the Out Of Range alert work? I just got a hammer drill and it appears that the alert is nothing more than a silent notification on my phone. Am I doing something wrong? I had imagined that the alert would be something I could hear. If the alert can only be silent, it seems like a useless feature.

Actually what i would find usefull is a working hour counts. I mean total. From day one you pulled the trigger. So in this case DeWalt could give you a /year or /working hours guarantee.

That would be the only useful thing here oh, that way you have a good idea of how much of your tool life you have left. Instead they included all kinds of other anal retentive features like lending out your tool for only so many hours before it quits. Like is that an issue for you LOL

There is a coin battery under the base of the tool that allows for the Bluetooth LE to stay connected. It is good for 3 years according to DeWalt and it is not user replaceable. You have to take it to the service centre if the coin battery goes. If you have a 20V on the tool, then the Bluetooth draws power from that instead of the coin battery.

If you're using automatic tool disabling, it shouldn't work once it gets out of range. Since that seems to be shoddy, your next step would be to disable it manually every time you leave it alone.

If your phone has good bluetooth on it, enable the disabled if out of range feature. Going through a few extra steps with the smart features is better than having a 120 dollar quarter inch impact and a 50 dollar battery stolen. So if a thief take your dewalt tool away, the battery and tool becomes 2 paperweights which the thief is going to regret. 170 dollars is very expensive for a construction worker that makes barely enough money to live a half decent living and retirement.

I think these trackers are rubbish because it is limited to a people who have this app, and also it is visible on tool and easy to get rid of. I opened a couple of my tools and inserted apple AirTag inside the plastic tool body. More people are using Apple device than users with Milwaukee app can be found, and also it would be difficult for a thief to spot AirTag inside the tool and remove it. If my tools are stolen, it will take about 12 hours for me to find out about that it was stolen. I can then track the location of my tools and call cops. I'm sure AirTag will be still inside my tool and location will be accurate. If I used Milwaukee or dewalt tracker it can be easily removed from the tool and in that case you won't find your tools. I don't understand why toolmakers like dewalt Milwaukee festool etc don't collaborate with apple and implement AirTag technology with their tools. If AirTag is part of a tool and can't be removed because it is part of a PCB, then thieves wouldn't steal any tools because they would be found faster than they could sell them. I will rather pay £30 $30 extra for tool that have AirTag technology inside than have option to mount some tag from outside which can be removed in seconds. Also, I will rather buy tools from company that protects end users with this technology and I will feel more safe buying tools from that company knowing that it won't be stolen and if so I will find my tools in a couple of hours and recover them. In London where I'm based is lots of site burglary and thieves clean the site in a couple of minutes and take all tools without cases or boxes. These tools are sold next day in another part of London, and sometimes this people sell you your own stolen tools. Luckily I didn't experience this, but I'm ready to track my tools if they are stolen. I think every company should work with apple and implement this in their products, and we all will benefit from this.
