Thank you, Martin, a great English lecturer! It's hard for me to find a local teacher with excellent English skills like you. The five-level tests gave me the opportunity to measure my English grammar and vocabulary. I have found weaknesses in my English to improve it. Thanks to your explanation, I can understand some difficult sentences, such as: "it's not exactly what I wanted, but it'll do" means, it's not great but enough for me; "they must be doing well for themselves" means, they must be making a lot of money. I want to express my admiration for your body language. It is very clear and exactly matches your voice. It was a lot of fun for me, thank you very much, Martin, and see you again in another OOE lesson.

Hi! Thank you for this lesson! I have just studied the verb "know". I've seen a sentence : *"I have always known Sarah to tell the truth, so I believe what she is saying now."* So, I'm wondering if I can say : *"I know Sarah to have been honest"* to mean that I know that Sarah was honest in the past ? And can I also say : *"I knew Sarah to have been a good woman"* to mean that I knew that Sarah had been a good woman ? Thank you so much!

I agree that, "Can you tell me how I sign up for the free trial?" is correct, but this sentence with "do", is possibly in more common usage. I guess it would be spoken as viz: "Could you tell me...? How do I sign up for the free trial?", or "Could you tell me: How do I sign up for the free trial?"
@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it is not more common with 'do', as native speakers usually use the least amount of words to convey their ideas when possible. However, yes, if you are using two separate clauses like you mentioned, you can use the question with 'do'.

OMG, the last one is so complicated. I've watched it three times, but I still don't understand! ------ "To do someone good" is just a fixed phrase. It usually means that something is helpful or that something has been beneficial to someone. (And in the negative, the opposite)

Good evening to you from Ukraine! Could you explain me , please,does verb " have" need in auxiliary verb "do" if we make a question or negative sentence in Present Simple time? Thank you in advance.
@Oxfordonlineenglish13 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Good question. Yes, 'have' follows the same rules as other verbs. For example: 'I don't have any milk left,' and, 'Do you have any milk left?'. In British English, sometimes you will hear: 'I haven't got any milk left,' and, 'Have you got any milk left?' These have the same meaning. You can learn more in these lessons: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/present-simple-verb-tense, www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/use-have-get.
