I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

I was thinking about these inversion sentences and here is one, good one! The fairy had not only become trapped inside the bulb but she also needed the toilet. Not only had the fairy become trapped in the bulb ..... 😇😀 Which one is more formal? In Russia lives 153 different nationalities, in the USSR were 216, but only one 'RED STAR", that the reason they all speak Russian with different accents and dialects. Inversion of that is, that the "RED STAR' had gone, but the rest stays. 😇😀

Thank you so much from Ukraine Emma! Just about a couple of days ago I was thinking about the inversion, as I see it quite often and I was interested in learning it. And today I've seen your video and I was able to understand everything you were talking about! Thank you!! And one more thing!:)) As I'm learning different English accents (British is my favourite one!:)) but I also know you have more than 50 accents and dialects in England, I want to say that your accent is really great and it's a great pleasure to listen to it:))

That’s really kind :) thank you! And if I remember rightly from my linguistics degree, there is something crazy like over 100 different accents and dialects. I remember something like 160-something because accents and dialects vary from town to town so much (though my memory could be letting me down here and I’ve completely made up that number! Haha). There was a TV show some years ago with Stephen Fry about language and he talked about all the ways “house” is pronounced in the U.K.! It was so interesting!

How often is this structure used? Are there any good examples of authors who use it frequently or is it not so common even in the literature?

@Pronunciationwithemma 4 жыл бұрын
It's used quite a bit, but some words/phrases with inversion are used a lot more than others. For example, the "not only..., but also..." is used a LOT, especially in academic writing. In terms of specific literature, that's really hard to say because inversion will be used even in Harry Potter, you know what I mean? But I cannot say "it's used on every page of HP", but I can say "it IS used at least ONCE in HP". Hope that makes sense. It's a tricky question to answer.

Hi ! Is there a specific rule for those inversions ? Because with some adverbs there are no inversions. For example; after I read a book I always make some notes. Where as with some of them we have inversions like “hardly, scarcely etc.” Thank you in advance .
@Pronunciationwithemma
@Pronunciationwithemma 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand your question, sorry. But let me try and answer. Inversions only happen with a very specific list of words and phrases... NOT with all adverbs, as I think you're maybe asking about here. With a quick google search, you can find loads of lists with the words and phrases used with inversion. I haven't created one or linked to any here specifically.
