I don't understand the purpose of all the other scribe marks besides the TDC one. The second mark is located the same distance as the marks on the jointer pal. The rear mark and the 90 degree mark on the bed seem unnecessary. In fact, I just did it this evening using only the front mark. Am I missing something?

I have spent a long time trying to use the Jointer Pal with my Grizzly Jointer. I am convinced that the scribing is meant to fool you into thinking that the Jointer Pal is a precision tool, when it is really just overpriced junk.

At the beginning you say to find TDC but using this method that only works if the blades are at the correct height already. Right?

Hi Joe, thanks for the question. Yes, the referenced blade should be at TDC before moving on to the next steps. If your machine is not at TDC, adjust your outfeed table height until the bottom of your straightedge just contacts, then mark that point on the fence, as shown at 2:00 in the video. It's vital to choose one blade as the reference in order to set the height evenly for all blades after that. Hope this helps!

Your using the installed blades to find top dead center. What if the blade is not aligned properly? Isn't there a more precise way to find top dead ctr?

I plan to get this tool. What I need to know is the size of the bolts on those bars that hold the blades in place. I inherited a Delta JT360 6" jointer and it was a floor model without those bars. Delta no longer sells the bolts but I did get the bars. Yours looks exactly like the Delta. The rep at Delta thought they were 1/4"x28x3/8". Manual calls for a 10mm wrench to remove the 4 bolts on each bar. I just need to know the bolt size so I can buy locally.

Look up "Thread Detective" on Amazon. I bought a set of these and they are absolutely invaluable for finding nut and bolt sizes.

How do you find top dead center if you have already removed the knives?
@grizzlymachines

Hey there! Unfortunately there's no good way to locate the top dead center without the knives installed. According to our experts, to find the proper TDC (top-dead-center), it's vital to have the knives installed (see 1:50 in the video), and to mark the positioning of TDC as shown in the video around the 2:10-mark. This will ensure that you always know the TDC location according to the knives used--or at least the top of the cutter arc, as height may change slightly with sharpening over time. It's very important to know the TDC with the knives in place for a consistent installation, and to always check the TDC alignment with your outfeed table height using a straightedge. I hope that helped somewhat, and please feel free to contact our customer contact team or Tech Department at Grizzly.com/contact for further questions or concerns.

bought one of these. In my opinion it does not work well. I followed my jointer`s manual with out it in the end and THEN was able to get my jointer knives set properly

congratulation, you just gauged some deep scratches into your $700 jointer's cast iron top that will later turn into rust, now go and make some saw dust. brilliant.

Only water will make it rust, have had one on my jointer for years. It's cast iron. There is no coating on it .

burs - true story bruv. They do deflect when twisting the nuts, or adjusting the blades. A metal shaving or the like in your face is never a good scenario.

David, we would suggest you take the jig to the hardware store and see what bolt fits. Most likely ¼-28 or M6x1. Many older imported machines had bolts with standard threads and metric heads so it’s very possible the Delta dealer and the customers manual are both correct.
