I have watched so many damn videos on power query, and pivot charts, and I've come a long way but your calm, "we'll take all day if we have to" approach helps it all sink in. I subscribed I'm so impressed! Can you or anyone in the comments please tell me or direct me on something? I'm a hotel bartender and since 2018 I've been tracking my credit card, room charge and cash tips, a sheet for each month and totals, etc. I've made a table for my input and and a table next to it for a number of calculations. My 2 days off each week are Zeros all across the sheets. Because of 52 weeks having all those Zeros, Excel can't recommend pivot charts or data analysis. How can I remove the days off for analytics purposes without removing the days off rows permanently? 2023s workbook my 2 days off will not be same as 2022, and plus it's November now, so I only have 1 month of Zeros left to deal with. In January I'll have a full year of Zeros. I'm sure there's content on YT but I don't know where. Meanwhile, I'm going to continue watching your videos. CHEERS!

Nice now I understand what’s the case for power query, or rather the benefit of doing so intended by Microsoft, compared to doing filtering and adding formulas DIRECTLY to the original data sheet, which is my preference till now. First it helps people who can’t use if else statements, or other excel formulas to ‘massage’ the data. Second, it help to split it into 3 layers, original data - transform - presentation, and I think this is the real case even if I know excel formulas, as it retain the original data structure to interface with other places when needed, eg inputs. That’s also mean if my original data structure changes, I need to update my transform layer too. It will be great if you could do a session on the real practical pros and cons of this power query compared to direct edit the data set 😅

Hi Kevin I'm trying to combine 2 columns in the query to make a new column with year & numerical month. The formula is erroring out of course. I did the insert or year & insert of period but trying to put a dash separator.. thanks

Automatization and large database managing. For automatization; With Power Query once you have the M language written, which are the steps you do manually being written just like recording a macro, there's no need to do all of it over and over again, you just update the source file and refresh the query and the data will be arranged as you need it based on the steps that were written. For the large database portion; excel has a limit of rows a little over 1 million rows, so any database over that is not going to be loaded properly in the spreadsheet. With power query you can load that database into a pivot table cache and then just manipulate the data to see specific reports without having the 1M+ rows in your table.

This tutorial is great, except it introduces too many transformations in a row one after another one, to the point that the viewer loses track of them and does not have any time to digest them. Introduce one transformation at a time and emphasize what you are going to to. This way you get the attention of the viewer. This tutorial is just a little bit too long.
