How to use the I Ching for beginners

The I Ching is also known as the Book of Changes. Have you ever wondered how to use the I Ching with coins? Or how to consult the I Ching? Or how find meaning in the I Ching hexagrams? In this video, we explore this fascinating and mysterious oracle. This is the I Ching how to.
We consider two approaches: the divination approach, and the psychological approach.
1. The Divination Approach: What is divination? The word comes from the Latin “divinare” which means “to foresee, to foretell, or to make prophecy.” It means gaining insight into a question or a problem through connecting with the divine.
And historically, the I Ching has roots in divination, as early as neolithic China. It enjoyed widespread use during the Qin Dynasty between 221 BC to 206 BC, under emperor Qin Shi Huang. This video goes into one method for I Ching divination using three coins.
2. Psychological Approach: Pioneered by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung; he saw the I Ching as a way to access the symbols and archetypes of the collective unconscious. We can think of the hexagrams as a rich symbolic language; each one expressing a unique state of change that’s universal. We find it in nature, and in every culture in the world. In this video, we also explore some guidelines on forming questions when consulting the I Ching.
There are no hard and fast rules to this. The I Ching is a personal oracle, and the point is to build an authentic and individual connection wit it, that resonates with you.

My dad passed away 10 years ago and in a recent move to a new house I, unconsciously, placed his I Tjing on the table where I kept seeing it. Curiosity made me open it a few days later and I found all these questions he asked it before he died (he had cancer). My mom a few years ago give me one of these coins because she told me it was for good luck. Like 2 weeks ago someone from a discord that I’m in mentioned the coin and I thought mhmm I think that’s the coin my mom gave me. I held my question of what I needed to know right now. I cast my coins and got 3 changing lines. My first hexagram was 33, and the transformed hexagram was 64. I am still thinking about 33, but the transformed hexgram held an obscene amount of meaning for me. I am really REALLY glad I found this channel. I was searching for videos on synchronicity and, after watching a few science videos, I found your video. This is truly amazing, I feel I was led here , after exploring Astrology n then happened to randomly bump into someone that offered me a tarot card reading on my past , present , n future, n describing who I am n why I'm here , I was dumbfounded on the accuracy of the reading n immediately understood how she was able to interept the energy. I got an immediate download of understanding. I have to say... it's ridiculously accurate for a first time, with curiosity in mind rather than a craving for answers. Well, I am trying to see it as a way to reflect on my thoughts and intuitions from the moment, helping me cast doubts away and focus on what I felt was right, rather than just taking it for granted. But it was veeeeery accurate for a first time, especially with an open question regarding my situation. The first hexagram felt like a good understanding of my current status, confirming the main thing that was going on. Surprisingly on point. The changing line was very in point too, as what needed to be brought in the near future in order to further success/change. Couldn't agree more (all the other changing lines listed weren't even close to something meaningful) Leading to the final hexagram which sounded like the "how to proceed" in order to transition from the first hexagram (current situation) to the changing line (solution/goal)

I tried my first question, asking whether I should look for another job. I like my current job, but I could probably find a better paying one if I wanted to. I got hexagram #32 (Duration), with a 3rd changing line, pointing to #40 (Deliverance). After much reading, some meditating, and sleeping over it, I determined that the Oracle was telling me that I should remain at my job for now. There is a lot to it, but this is the gist of it: #32 is about "the way of husband and wife", which I took as being my relationship with my work team and company, as being mutually influenced and beneficial in the long run. The changing line alluded to my present dissatisfaction, but also risk of disgrace for moving forward in this situation. The changed hexagram (#40) suggests relief from the dissatisfaction in the end. Overall I take this as an advice to wait for the right moment to make a move, which would be when this cycle (projects I am involved in) end and a new one begins, i.e., not now.

I'll try to make this brief: I last consulted the I Ching roughly a month ago with no question in mind, using bibliomancy, and I received hexagram #24: Return. A few minutes later, I told a friend, but mentioned no details, and then he spontaneously did a reading for me, using bibliomancy from his large print King James Version, asking the question "What does Sam need right now?" The result: 2nd Chronicles 22:6-"And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at Ramah." Note the verb phrase, "he returned." Now, I gave my friend a reading last night, (using my brand new I Ching coins for the first time ever), while meditating on my friend and his urgent question: "How best to implement the force of love to turn the Wheel of the World?" The result: Hexagram #24: Return, (with not one, but three changing lines), leading to #52: Mountains! My friend was so impressed by the insane accuracy and wisdom of the I Ching that he said he might need to start consulting it himself! Anyhow, thanks for reading, and thank you for the uploads! Excellent work. I was reading Kersons Huang's translation of the I Ching today and your video complements my reading perfectly. I really recomend that specific translation to anyone intrested. I throws some light into the historic journey of I Ching and how it was influenced by the confucianistic philosophy. Also it presentes the original text without the addition of the ten chapters that according to the writter give to I Ching a more ethical aspect.

Hello, just found your channel. I'm very impressed! I found my I Ching book during a major life trauma. That trauma brought up suppressed childhood trauma and I was in a deep hole. I couldn't function. I couldn't sleep. There were many bad things happening to me and around me. I felt like my mind was in pieces. I would open the book and just read, page after page, until my mind calmed down and I could sleep. It was my life raft in that time. The only thing that made sense. I've held that little book sacred for over 30 years now.

Ive got a super unique first name. And lately ive been seeing my own first name EVERYWHERE. ill be reading some science paper on my phone and get to the end and notice that my first name was one of the main authors last names. Or ill be looking at some product on amazon, and then see that the company that sells has the same name as my first name. I was even on youtube and refreshed and an artist popped up with my name. All my life ive looked for my name everywhere. Its never been on a keychain, its never been on a can of coke, and ive even had random people ask to see my ID because they dont believe me when i tell them my name - its that unique. If I may suggest, perhaps you could consider putting the audio through a HPF (high pass filter) to reduce the bass in the voice. This helps to bring out more clarity especially at low volume.

I haven't tried the I Ching yet, but! I do the same with just about any book at hand including the books in my Kindle device. I look into certain pages, especially p.11, and code numbers used by police/EMS. The content of the pages resonate to the context of my question. The reticular activating system does the deciphering for me. I noticed one can use the Nobel Prize winning books, and papers as "I Ching" tools.

As you probably already know, the ancient Greeks believed that virtually anything can serve as an oracle, and the universe speaks to us through the "everyday noise of the world." The I Ching is one of many ancient ways to do this, and I've found it to be a very powerful and useful to me. Cheers!

I have been using Oracle for years and the guy in the video is correct. Questions are from mind. Mind is shaped by experience and affects our identity... ego. If we have traumatizing experiences our ego becomes disrupted and therefore the questions asked, in such a condition state of mind, means that we are overly locked into thinking about things in a way which is based on unreal notions. I saw my mom tossing coins when I was a child very often and she’s still doing this today. It’s only until now that I came across this and know this as Iching. I have been feeling off these few days and procrastinating from working on my business. I just had a feeling that there’s something nudging me not to do anything and I don’t know what it is. After watching this video I think maybe Iching found me and wants to show me something I should know. It’s no way this is a coincidence. I don’t have any coins to toss so I improvised and used 3 pieces of paper, wrote head and tail and ‘toss’ and see what I got. 😅

I see that some people think that 2 tails is yang and some thing 2 tails in yin. I like your answer here of saying that 2 tails in yin and 2 heads is yang. Seems to make more sense. So three heads would be 9, three tails would be 6, two tails and one head would be yin 7, two heads and a tail would be yang 8.

I am a bit confused because the other way based on odd and even sum seems more based.. But i like yours more to meaning 6,7 is yin and 8,9 is yang But honestly when i see Bagua trigram , i wonders maybe the order of coins are important in each drop,specially in Xun & Zhen.. others differentiated more like your way But These two could be interpreted on first coin if it is in minority and different than the majority …

Greetings! I have been reading the Wilhelm edition for 24 years. I have Brocas Aphasia. The I Ching has been my life tutor and a wise counselor, I deeply am grateful and continually learn more. I use it every day. I found a book called The Elements of the I Ching, I call it "for dummies" version. But of course we know this book is only for the superior man, aka the man who wants to walk in wisdom. The Elements book has a copy of the chart you showed and I use that mainly for getting the number. I didn't always use it correctly, in fact I am still finding out ways I can perhaps improve in my methods. At first I started reading it as a poetic book for 2 years not really understanding it. Then I realized it was an Oracle and I used the quarters method. I did that for personal use for many years. I experimented with stalks counting also but found it confusing. Two years ago as I was reading the forward in "Elements", wherein it describes a method using MARBLES. 16 total marbles of 4 different colors. 7 of one color, 5 of a second color, 3 of another color, one of another color. The choice in colors is up to the user. I had a Chinese checkers set and borrowed them from that. The number of marbles for each color depends on the odds of that line. This method is fun and I find the odds better than coins and though the stalks are the cleanest odds, its not as cumbersome to derive your hexagram. 7 marbles is Stable Yin (open line) 5 marbles is Stable Yang (closed line) 3 marbles is transforming Yang (closed line with oval in the middle) 1 marble is transforming Yin (open line with an X through the middle) After you have assembled your marbles get a basket, I use a soft hemp basket that I can wrap up and doesn't make too much noise. But if you like noise, and sometime I do, then use whatever suits you. After you put all the marbles in your basket, shake it around and without looking at the colors choose a marble; note its color and associated line. Thats your first line. Put the marble BACK (dont forget to do this lol). Continue the process until you have all six lines. VOILA! I hope you find benefit in this method as I have.
