I too had a problem with the OBS showing on the 430W display. I took it back to the dealer THREE times and he said it won't do that. Well it did with my old STEC 50. Thankfully I found your video and sent it to a Garmin tech. I got his name then went back to the dealer showed him the video and gave him the technician's name and said work it out. Finally they got it to work and gave me some esoteric BS reason why they did not set it up right the first, second and third time. THANKS

BTW I choose the flush mount option for my G5s. It seems many dealers do not know it is an option. I had to tell mine. Really looks good.

I can get the G5 to show heading changes while turning the OBS, but these are not shown on my GNS 430W. Is there a setting on the 430 I am missing?

Beautiful panel. I was surprised and thrilled to see the G5 showing a dual cue flight director. I much prefer this over the VBar. Was this configuration done during the install or is it pilot selectable in the menu?
@dcheever7773 жыл бұрын
I’ve flown both in airline equipment and find cross pointer more accurate. If I remember correctly your installer can set it in the configuration settings. I really need to do a better video, this one was done without much planning.

How did you get your course to display on the top G5? I haven’t seen that option unless you are in HSI mode

Ok, you have the GPS to OBS. Now, you’re VOR/ILS GNC-255 should also feed that G5. As you have it set RMI style, I’ll assume it is so wired. How do you toggle the OBS to that OBS? My understanding is that an option should be available on the PFD display but mine lacks that option. Is there a setting that also needs to be adjusted? I’ve a GNX-375 and GNC-255 tied to my G5. The GNC VOR works fine with its own OBS and as an RMI on the G5, but I can’t toggle thus get no glideslope from it. The GPS works well both OBS and RMI style on the G5 with its own map and OBS on itself.

Hi dennis, thks for sharing... i have installed a g5 hsi and i have a doubt about the VOR functionallity when it comes to fly the radials... by selecting the VOR course option, a window with the VOR Course indicator pops up blocking the view of the lower side not able to see the reciprocal the tail of the arrow. is there an option to set the configuration differently to display the digital course in a blank area of the screen?

I have not seen that, but also not used that function for quite a while. Heck, I haven’t even been flying for a while. I’ll try to get in the plane this weekend and double check. What navigator are you using?

Im considering the G5s for my 172 - Ive used the Aspen in the past - I like it - I like to use the ARC display rather than the full HSI compass rose - any chance the G5 HSI has the ability to use the ARC ? thx
@dcheever7774 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck. I know what you mean about the arc display, I flew the 777 and we did that as a map overlay. Not on the G5 though, no map or traffic either. Garmin releases new firmware periodically and with the GI 275 now out who knows what they may add to the G5 in the future. To help with your decision I suggest you download the G5 pilots guide. static.garmin.com/pumac/190-01112-12_A.pdf

Does the G5 HSI connect to the nav radio for ils, vor, and loc approaches? As in not the GPS. My flying club has a 172 that has a Garmin 175 navigator. It doesn't have an obs option to switch the cdi from GPS to vloc because the navigator only gives GPS information. It doesn't have integrated comms or nav. We're in the market to get a second G5 as the HSI but I'm worried that we'll only be able to read GPS data on it and won't be able to connect it to the nav frequencies on our radio stack.
@dcheever777 Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. I looked through the G5 installation manual and do not see a way to connect two different navigation units (i.e. the 175 and a VOR/LOC receiver). The best thing would be ask your Garmin dealer if there is a work around. With the new GPS only units I wouldn’t thing you are the first one to encounter this. Sorry I not more helpful.

Hello, watching your video and I just had dual g5's installed with my garmin 430 and stec 30 autopilot. at anytime while flying, i there is 9 degrees difference between the 430 and the g5's???? Any suggestions
@dcheever7774 жыл бұрын
Larry Markley Sorry I could not reply sooner, am on vacation. Have your installer check the GMU11 calibration and be sure it’s passing the interference test. They should also run post installation checks on the interface. Their Garmin rep will help if needed also.

Just got Dual G5s and GFC500 AP. When approaching and airport in VFR conditions I would twist the course pointer on my trusty old STEC-50 to runway heading. This way it was easy to see the runway relative to my current heading. This is the way I was taught 25 years ago and I remember the avionics guy even said "that's why it is called a Horizontal Situation Indicator". Can I press OBS and move the course pointer or do I have to be in VLOC?
@dcheever7774 жыл бұрын
Stephen Kaloroplos I’m pretty sure it works the same in GPS . I’ll check this weekend for you.

@@dcheever777 Please do. When I pressed OBS a dialog box popped up on the 430w "Set OBS to xxx" But I did not try VLOC.
@dcheever7774 жыл бұрын
I tried it today. When in GPS and pushing the OBS button I could change course from the G5, that changed it on the GNS also. In VLOC the course could only be changed from the GNS. Not sure I understand what the reason is.

Dennis. You're going to love this. I still cannot duplicate what you are doing so I called Garmin and a real nice guy named Kyle said it should. He would check it out and call me back. He did. Said it should and said he would email me a how to. Guess what...... you guessed it, he emailed a link to your video. He asked me to take a video doing exactly as you did. If it does not work there is something wrong and he will help to get it worked out. Looks like your video is a new Garmin reference. GOOD JOB!

What is the fastest way to switch between heading bug and gps course to feed the autopilot?
@dcheever7773 жыл бұрын
That would depend on what autopilot you have, but with the GFC 500 you press either the HDG or NAV button. I think the S-tec is similar but have never flown one.

“ I believe how it’s supposed to work” never use that phrase if you are showing someone how to use something.

Question. Does it work in both directions? IOW, changing in the G5 changes it in the navigator, and changing it in the navigator changes it in the G5.
@dcheever7774 жыл бұрын
Good question, I think so. I’ll be flying Saturday and will try to remember to check.
@dcheever7774 жыл бұрын
Yes it works both directions, but it seems in GPS you can only change it from the G5 and in VLOC only from the navigator. Not sure why.
@midlifeflyer4 жыл бұрын
Dennis Cheever hmmmm. I would expect it to be exactly the opposite. In a traditional setup, all changes to a VOR course/radial would be on the HSI. I didn't think the navigator even had the ability to change the radial of a VLOC.
@midlifeflyer4 жыл бұрын
Did a little checking. Check Section 2.3.2 COURSE SELECTION of the User Guide. Apparently that's how it is supposed to work.

I've just fitted two g5's, gfc500 and have a 430W and am not able to use the OBS as you are. Is it possible to let me know what your 430 configuration pages are set to?
@dcheever7773 жыл бұрын
You will love your new setup with the G5's and GFC500. I have pulled my 430W and installed a new 650xi so cannot check what the exact config settings were. Your Garmin dealer that did the installation should be able to help you.
@Pro2eus3 жыл бұрын
@@dcheever777 I think I will, it's going to make long trips much more pleasant. Hope you like the 650xi. my avionics chap has said he's set it up as per the Garmin installation manual. I will keep searching.
@grahamb62943 жыл бұрын
This a common problem with GNS boxes and the G5s as the installation manual omits an important setting, so unless the installer knows this you end up with a disfunctional system. To fix it you need to go to the GNS430 configuration menu, 'Main ARINC 429 CONFIG' page, and change SDI from its default value to 'LNAV1' (or LNAV2 if it's the second 430 in a dual fit). If you look at the GTN section in the installation manual this is exactly what you do for those boxes, but its not included in the GNS section. I told Garmin about this nearly two years ago, and they agreed it was a mistake and promised to update the installation manual, but they never have.
@dcheever7773 жыл бұрын
Thanks Graham, that’s really good information. My avionics shop found errors in the GFC500 installation manual from Garmin, just hardware call out mistakes but wrong nonetheless. I have no idea if they corrected it or not.
