Hi Melissa, Since I stopped taking contraceptive pill my hormones are out of balance and so is my skin, I have many breakouts and scars. I recently became familiar with the ordinary, only I don't really understand how to combine it. You are truly my lifesaver. I've been applying routines now and I'm wondering the combinations are good or may actually irritate my skin: Morning routine: 1. Ormedic balance cleanser (Image Skincare) 2. Niacinamide serum (The ordinary) 3. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (The ordinary) 4. Spf 32 day (Image Skincare) Evening routine 1: 1. Ormedic Balance Cleanser (Image Skincare) 2. Direct Acids 7% Toning Solution (The ordinary) 3. Vital C total repair creme (Image Skincare) OR (I alternate evening routines 1 and 2) Evening routine 2: 1. Ormedic Balance Cleanser (Image Skincare) 2. Retinol 0,5% (The Ordinary) 3. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum (The Ordinary) Once a week I use the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution INSTEAD of the Retinol 0,5% for my evening routine. I was wondering if I can apply vitamine c repair creme after this peeling or not? Also, I read and see a lot about the exfoliator from Paula's choice. I'm just not sure if this one fits into my routine or what product I can substitute for it? thank you so much! Maaike

Hey! :) Welcome to the club of experiencing an increase in acne when getting off the pill. The same happened to me. It's a real struggle, I know. Do you only experience acne on your face or back and chest as well? Overall your skincare routine looks good! :) However, you may want to add a 4% or 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser to your AM and/or PM routine instead of using your Ormedic balance cleanser. Benzoyl Peroxide is an acne treatment that helps to reduce active acne pretty quickly. I use it myself. And you can even use a BP cleanser on your back or chest as well if you get there acne. I just recommend not using the Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser when using your Glycolic Acid, Retinol or the Peeling Solution in the evening as this can be pretty drying/irritating. Therefore I recommend just using it in the AM (when using it on your face). Glycolic Acid may work well for you. If it works for you, keep on using it. For me, Glycolic Acid always seems to cause tiny whiteheads. That's why I prefer Mandelic Acid or even Salicylic Acid. But, I usually do not use AHA or BHA exfoliating acids in my routine since I think that the combination of Benzoyl Peroxide and Retinol or, in my case, Differin works the best for me. Yes, you can use your Vitamin C Moisturiser after the Peeling Solution or Retinol :)

I didn't get any irritations or side effects while using 0,2 every evening since day 1, but could I g1et irritations once I start to use 0,5? Retinol won't keep over night moisturizing up, if you have dry skin especially during cold seasons. So oil will help you definetely keep that softness. Hey! :) You can not erase pores. As for your acne, you can improve it, however, if you do not know what's causing it, it's difficult to stop them from reoccurring. Hi Melissa, I've been using Ordinary products more than two years now and my skin is quite used to acids. I have been overusing their products till i found your videos and realised how little i actually need. However all of a sudden a few months back my skin started breaking out like crazy form any Ordinary product I have applied even though there was no change in my routine what so ever. I've been on allergy pills and neutral facial creams for weeks now and have just applied Retinol 0,5% in Squalane yesterday only to break out again. Same thing happens with all of their oil based products and even Marine Hyaluronics ... have you by any chance had any experience like that? Thank you for your response, your videos truly helped me a lot in my skin care routine
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
Hello Ivancica, In fact, I do have that experience, and it started about six weeks ago, but I just thought that it was because of the current situation. (war, virus etc.) But I used The Ordinary B-Oil on my back, and I now have massive breakouts everywhere, even on my shoulders. I stopped a few days ago, and it already seems to get better. I also used the Ordinary Retinol in Squalane, and I have a lot of breakouts on my face. Now I wonder if they changed something in their formula or changed the supplier 🤔 because of the ongoing bad situation. My face was clear for a longer period, but now it has started all over again, and I do not have that much stress since things aren't going that bad for me personally. Still, everything around is terrible 😕 So I wonder did you change anything in your life, or did it happen suddenly? 🤔

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Hi Melissa, thank you for your response... I haven't really changed anything and I don't really remember if I bought something new (I would need to check the packaging to remember). It started out of nowhere and this is why I didn't initially react to it and have just kept using the same products. After several weeks of corticosteroid cream treatment I started using facial cream base with no additives from pharmacy for a few weeks now and have recently introduced Garnier's Hyaluronic Aloe gel which is basically pure water so my face and neck got clear but as soon as I introduce anything Ordinary to the mix my whole skin breaks out. It happened with Borange seed oil and yesterday with Retinol in Squalane where the breakouts really got severe. I don't really know anyone in Croatia whit extensive Ordinary regime so will try and find more stuff online and will get back with proper feed back if any. Thanks again fore great content and your reply, I.

@@ifcica Well, I meant if you changed anything else in your diet or if you had more stress so that it may influence it. Also, some people in my comment section mentioned that the Squalane oil may be an issue; still, it is weird if you have it with any product. I only seem to have it with the oils and Squalane. But it could be anything. So I will also pay closer attention to it and see if anything changes or if it was just a coincidence.

Do you think it would still be “okay” to use it after the retinol? Or should it be a softer one?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
If you are really on the oily side, it won't work as well, or at least you will have a weird feeling on your skin, which may feel very uncomfortable. But it is individual and mainly depends on what you like. However, since the Squalane is already very "oily", the combination isn't great, and a lighter moisturizer like the CeraVe Ultra Light PM lotion would be much better.

Hi. Thank you for the cool informative videos ❤ Do you think it would be a mistake to buy the 0.5 retinol if I used the 0.2 for about 2-3 weeks and then had a 2 months pause (due to certain circumstances)? The 0.2 retinol wouldn't cause me any irritation or drying, and I didn't see any effect but I also heard that it takes at least 2-3 months to see some improvement. My skin is oily in T-zone and chin, some areas can be flaky sometimes, so I think to combine retinol with a gel-like non-TheOrdinary moisturizer. Is there any alternative to it if my concern is acne and post-acne pigmentation? Or is it the most effective product?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
Hey! :) Well, this all depends on what your skin can tolerate. You may experience no issues at all. If that's the case, go for it. If sensitivity occurs reduce the frequency. Do you like the texture of The Ordinary Retinols or do you prefer something else? Initially thought about using Adapalene gel or Differin, but it's hard to find it non-overpriced like crazy and in larger tubes. But with retinol I also get anti-aging bonus so it's fine 🤷😄 I've read some of your replies to other comments and it seems like I could use Niacinamide + SPF (am) and Retinol + moisturizing factors (pm) which is great because I'd like it to improve faster 😅

However, it is not possible to remove wrinkles using topical treatments alone. In terms of improvement, I would recommend trying COSRX retinol cream, which contains 0.1% retinol. Hi ladybug, thank you once again for your tutorials including in depth understanding and backing it up with showing your application. I’m still struggling with adjusting my drops of serums. It’s either too much, or feels like not enough? For instance: using 3 drops of alpha Arbutin seems like the right amt. but with my Vit C( Dr.Brenners 20% serum); it does not spread easily therefore I’ve been having to use 4-5 drops in order to apply evenly on face neck and chest. But it’s not my fav for sure. I got it because it has ferulic acid and Vit E. Since my skin under my eyes are very dehydrated, I’ve not been applying my retinal 2% in squaline from Ordinary under my eyes. Thank you for demonstrating and teaching how approx how many drops to use and adjust accordingly Have a Blessed Happy Merry Christsmas and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Do you have a Am and Pm routine video showing how you layer a few products?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet3 жыл бұрын
Hello Karla, I personally haven't tested the Vitamin C serum you have. But does it have a light/watery texture? If so, you need to use between 5-8 drops; otherwise, it won't be enough. Or you need to use it as a booster with your other serums/moisturizer so that you only need to use three drops. (mixing it) But that may influence the absorption of the vitamin c serum. But there is no research about this, so it basically can have the same effects, and your skin may still have enough while doing so 🤷🏻♀️ You can add an eye cream or a moisturizer under your eyes to fight dehydration, as I said in the video, or use it less often on the eye contour; that works well for me. I have multiple videos showing the application of different products on my channel. Still, apparently only specific combinations. I will do such a video soon since it is a great idea. Thanks Happy Holidays for you too, and thank you very much 🥰

A serum containing 0.5% concentration is already quite potent. It's possible that you're experiencing purging or retinization, which can take several weeks to resolve. Additionally, it's important to consider how many drops of the serum you are applying. It primarily delays/slows down the absorption so that the skin can tolerate it better. Still, with The Ordinary Retinol, 0,5% is in an oil (Squalane). Therefore, it isn't as irritating on the skin. So based on experience, you do not need to use something else before or after. If you have a lotion such as Paula's Choice 1% Retinol, you must hydrate the skin well after or even use something before as otherwise, you will experience irritation.

Yes, most Retinol Serums creams do not mention a frequency; this is not good since it can quickly lead to very unpleasant irritation. Especially for such high strength retinol products and if you have never used any retinol before. Therefore based on my experience, I recommend starting with 2-3 times a week doing that frequency for a few weeks and then adjusting it to your needs. That way, you make sure that you won't harm your skin. If you only use Retinol and nothing else in your routine, it will probably not be as bad. Still, if you play around with other actives, it can quickly become very unpleasant, which is another factor you need to consider. And yes, it can help with pigmentation based on how it works. As I explained in the video. 😃

Well, it is just that I have had lots of people in my comment section complaining that The Ordinary Retinol wasn't working for them, but it was because they had a "bad" product. So depending on your area(country), it seems to be a real issue since their formulations aren't very stable. And I guess depending on how the seller stored it, it may affect it since some said that when they ordered it from an official retailer, they start seeing irritation. But also, it can be because your skin tolerates it better or that the retinol conversion isn't happening at all, but that is something you will figure out after months. So it is probably best to give it some more time to see how it goes, and if it does not show any improvements after months, then it is likely best to change it. And I am going over my comments every day for a couple of hours, and I currently do not have many people writing long questions or generally not many comments at all; it is tranquil on KZbin and in my area. Inflation is very high, so I guess that not many people buy skincare products since they likely need them for other things. Anyway, I am trying to help as many people as possible 😀 still, I can't help everyone 😉 I Hope that more people will start doing it over time so that we can help each other.

Why can not to be used during breastfeeding?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
Retinol/Retinoids should generally be avoided during pregnancy because they may get into your bloodstream. Therefore, they could influence it. Still, it is a controversial topic with little research and not much evidence for breastfeeding. And consequently, it's best to ask your doctor 😀

Can we use hyaluronic acid before retinol and i have oily skin should i use moisturizer afterwards or not please suggest
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's fine! :) No, you do not necessarily need to use a moisturizer afterwards. Only add one if you experience dryness.

Can we still use it after 3 months? Even if it is stored in refrigerator?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
It's not guaranteed that it still will be effective. It's kind of like an oil, which can go bad within 3 months or so as well.

There is no research about the long term use of any of these products, so basically, nobody really knows. But how is it going for you?

@@priyankanutalapati7794 You can give your skin a break if you want to. However, since there is no research about the long term effects, I don't know! Still, since it works well for you, you can also continue with your current routine! :) Thank you! For you too!🥰

Just got this as a gift and I used like 8 drops on my face 😂😂😂 whoops!! 🤷 Hope I don't get redness! I'll use like 3 drops next time.
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet2 жыл бұрын
I found that around 3-5 for my face and neck works best. But generally, you won't get redness that quickly; it usually happens after several times or weeks while always using too much and also depends a lot on the strength and formulation you are using.

Do you accidentally get it on the lips, or do you use it on the lips?
