Wow really! I am looking forward to seeing your results! Some further tweaks could be needed of course to color temp and tint, or on a shot to shot basis depending on how things were shot. Also you might isolate and tweak skin tones separately, I didn’t go into any of that in the video. Let me know where I can see your videos once you have something uploaded!

Hi Will! Thanks! It won’t work using the FiLMiC supplied LUT in the same way because that LUT doesn’t target ARRI LogC. The FiLMiC supplied LOGv3 LUT will convert to Rec.709 though. You can use FilmConvert’s own camera profile for FiLMiC LOGv3, looks a bit different but there are multiple ways to do things.

Hi Richard, thanks for sharing all your knowledge here for free. Especially, your Dubai Marina footage has a great appeal on me as I started my filming passion just in Jan 2020 in Dubai, equiped with an iPhone 8, FilmicPro and an anamorphic lens. Since then, I am still in the learning process about Log-profiles, grading trees, etc. Her my question: wouldn't film convert also be beneficial for any other Log profile, e.g. V-Log (with a color space transform node before it) to get to this great looks on y push of a button (instead of building 10-12 nodes trees that completely eat up my PC capacity)?
@RichLackey2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, the filmconvert plugin is very versatile and you can download all kinds of source camera profiles for it.

@@RichLackey Hi Richard, inspired by your great introduction of filmconvert, I came across CineMatch from the same SW company. From first testing with some existing footage I am more than delighted: I regularly use a workflow in DR wich takes advantage of Arri LogC as color space for it's great treatment of collors and rolloffs. CineMatch at the beginning of my node tree, replacing a color space transform node makes, gives my overal grading a huge leap forward. So, adversly to many I will not use filmconvert for grading, instead bringing the footage of any camera into Arri LogC with CineMatch to feed the rest of the grading node tree with the best colors. Anyway, it was your merit to bring those tools to my attention, and I would like to personally thank your for it!

Just curious Richard - have you been interested in the subtractive colour density of DCTLs or are you content with the film emulations in FCN/Dehancer?
@vernonsza3 жыл бұрын
Very cool. Just curious, is it possible, in Resolve, to take all of these steps and save them as a LUT to use in Lumafusion? I guess the workflow would be to shoot in Filmic pro (using the the settings you recommended) and edit everything in Lumafusion. Start to finish on the iPhone yet still getting using the grade/look you showcase in the Resolve workflow.
@RichLackey3 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is something I actually haven’t fully looked at yet, but any LUT is a single fixed transform, you can vary its strength, but nothing else (you can apply other changes before or after it… but be aware this is a destructive process). The power of FilmConvert is that so much of the look, as well as correcting for variables in the source can be dialed in precisely shot for shot. If attempting to export a LUT from FilmConvert (I have not tried) it becomes a single, fixed transform. I haven’t found any acceptable (to me at least) solution for color work in a purely mobile post workflow yet.
@user-wf9wq9kq6u3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, this workflow sounds fantastic and your stills speak for themselves. I'm using an Iphone11 (logv2) and will experiment with your workflow in upcoming weeks/months. Having Davinci resolve colouring experience, I was wondering how to best integrate this in a grading workflow. - Would it be advisable to normalise and add primary and secondary grades BEFORE or after the LOG+Nitrate nodes? - Would you still recommend this workflow for low-light / non daylight / interior scenes? - Have you considered using your LUT in conjunction with a straight arriLOGc to rec709 .cube LUT instead of Nitrate, in order to be more granular with the coloring process? Best!
@RichLackey3 жыл бұрын
The LOGv2 to LogC transform LUT is designed for a LOGv2 input and won’t work correctly if any adjustments are made before it apart from maybe basic exposure, and possibly color temp, but for the best results you’ll make sure exposure and color temp are both correct and locked in FiLMiC Pro when shooting. You could try a LogC to Rec.709 LUT instead of FilmConvert Nitrate, or any LogC LUT for that matter. I haven’t spent time testing that though.
@avallejo11 ай бұрын
Hello…I’ve downloaded the V3 version from the website, and it works great into a SDR workflow, but resultas were even better inside a HDR workflow. Just to check, both your LUT and FilmConvert expect REC 709 color and gamma, right? I’m placing them after a couple of CST and editing between these, while working in a Managed color espace with ST2088 output, and after a little tweak it works fine…not sure if there’s a better way though…

amazing! downloaded everythin and about to test it..one question: should I have daylight white balance ON EVERY single clip even if that's not the correct white balance according to the scene (lets say im recording indoors with a tungsten bulb)?
@RichLackey3 жыл бұрын
Hi George, I think as long as the color temp matches the light, and white looks white, it will be fine. I built the transform from color charts lit by daylight temp light, and to be honest I don’t shoot much under warmer light so haven’t tested it as much. I’d love to know how your experience with it is.
@RichLackey3 жыл бұрын
Also the FilmConvert Nitrate plugin has useful controls too for color temp, and you can control how strong you want the film print emulation. So by shifting some of those around you can dial in your final look that you want.

@RichLackey3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much any look is possible to build from scratch with Resolve’s built in tools but not this fast and easy. I used to build film looks manually from scratch but found consistency to be hit and miss. This method gets me 90% of what I want, quickly, with the remaining 10% making adjustments shot by shot to match, or perhaps isolating and adjusting skin tones. The case will be different for everyone, but for me the plugin is worth it, I literally use it with every single project.

Hi Alan, no, this particular transform lut is made for FiLMiC Pro LOGv2 only. You can’t color grade Dolby Vision, it’s already a delivery format, purely for viewing only on a Dolby Vision capable HDR display. It’s no good for post production. Keep an eye out for news from FiLMiC Pro that should come soon. Something exciting is in the works, and I’ll have an updated workflow coming too.

Thank you for this video! I have a question: So when I have theses nodes: 1) Rich Lut and 2) Nitrate where I need to do a primeries and all colorgrading? After theses nodes? Or before the lut? Or between the lut and the nitrate?
@RichLackey3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. You’ll probably hear different answers from different people. Because I lock color temp when shooting (FiLMiC Pro daylight preset pretty much all the time), I find not much correction is required as long as exposure is optimal (I always expose to protect highlights no matter what). So I first correct for any shift caused by ND filter, then my LOGv3 to LogC transform (but I use the powergrade not the lut... I’ll make the powergrade available soon), and then third is FilmConvert Nitrate, and I’ll adjust exposure within FilmConvert shot by shot if required, maybe adjust tint. Secondaries I tend to do after FilmConvert Nitrate but it depends what you’re doing. Also because FilmConvert applies the film grain, any processing which works best before grain, needs to be done before the FilmConvert node. Things like debanding (not required in my experience with 10-bit source) and noise reduction, both best applied only where needed in the image, should definitely be done before the FilmConvert node.

Hello...I am so new at everything dealing with video, and editing. I'm looking for a good laptop for around $1,200 or so. You recommended an Asus Tuf model but it's no longer available on amazon. Got this question...can you video edit in an external harddrive say 1TB. I mean is it even possible, have you ever heard of it?
@RichLackey2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, yeah you can use an external hard drive for editing video but playback performance in your editing software will depend on the kind of video files. I need to update my recommendations actually, sorry for that. For the $1200 range, if you can add an extra $99 I’d definitely recommend the 13” Macbook Pro (M1 chip). There’s all kinds of reasons for this (new write up is coming) but really Apple have absolutely killed it with their new chips. I can’t in good conscience recommend a PC laptop anymore.

I discovered today that clips shot on an iPhone 8 using native iPhone camera app, downloaded to my desktop to edit on Resolve, will deliver different "original media" dependant on delivery pathway. usb-transfer, iPhone iMovie export, iPhone photos export, to airdrop, or via iCloud sharing. The clips that landed on my desktop to transcode into Resolve included (without the user purposely specifying the delivery codec) included: AAC, Timed Metadata, HEVC h.265; at 2 different bit rates one or two key frames Timed Metadata, AAC, Timecode, H.264; at two different bit rates.one or two key frames. Delivered desktop file sizes for a 13 minute clip ranged from 543MB, to 848MB from the same "unmodified" as shot on and stored on iPhone clip. Basically clip export from iPhone using Apple Apps, and device interfaces is unreliable, as the user can only select the pathway, without specifying the clip attributes. apple oversimplified clip management to the level of breaking media management. so be warned and explore the options.

When you use a third party camera app like FiLMiC Pro, the target bit rate for encoding can be set much higher than with the native camera app, also the codec is set. It records to its own folder, not the camera roll. You can access this folder using the files app, and airdrop the full size original media to desktop.
