This is amazing. We've just began learning how to use these in class and were so confused. These videos are a lifesaver. Cheers from BFA!

I'm so glad this is here. My PPL teacher never taught me any of this as he said day 1 get an ipad and foreflight as no one uses paper charts anymore. I passed PPL/IFR and am finishing up Commercial now but want to know how to do it in case I decide to go back and become a CFI. These videos are very helpful. It's old tech and my DPE never failed my ipad but I'd like to know so I can help others in the future.

When measuring the 135 knots, wouldn't it be 135 and 1/10 nautical miles? You said 135 and 1/2 but I wanted to be sure I was seeing this correctly. Thank you so very much for these classed, I'm using my Great Grandfather's E6B, an original issued and as I understand it, it can be used on the sea as well as the air? I'm relearning everything I can following a brain injury, and these videos are helping in my recovery. Thanks Again!

Great videos! Of note, in the absence of a plotter or bad scaling of a copied chart, you can use lines of latitude to measure distance. Each tic mark is one nm.

Superb explanation... reminded me of geography class back in high school of measuring distances on O.S. maps but we used 'chalk twine'- a very durable white string. I am thinking it might give the same answer too(thanks to my geography teacher Mr. Adhari for up to this day I can measure distances among other map reading skills with accuracy!).👍🇬🇾

@King Schools ....hold on... i think im confused or something... So why did you add the 27 min to the second checkpoint? You found out that the total distance from point (1456) is 27 min TOTAL... SO wouldn't the total time be 27 min from 1st point to end point. The remaining time would be total time minus checkpoint time ( 27min minus 9.25 min) which would be 17.75min remaining. From what i understand we just used the checkpoint as a reference to get our speed. Hey im a new flight student and may just be confused but i want to make sure im doing it right... The answer i got was.1523

If you go to 6:08 in this video they measure from the second checkpoint with the corner of the paper to the final checkpoint, which is 50 miles and it takes 27 minutes to get there. Add that 27 minutes to the second checkpoint because that is where the distance was measured from and you will get the 1528 mentioned as the answer to the problem. I thought the same thing as you the first time, but I watched it a few times and saw my error.

Hi, I'm 30 years old and would like to become a pilot. I'm going to go to a school within one year. What evidence or thoughts on my age do you have. If any at all. Thank you!!

interestingly enough you would have gotten the same answer if you used the plotter. 5 minutes to fly 6.5 miles and 35.5 miles remaining gives you 27 minutes to fly the remaining leg. 35.5 divided by 6.5 = 5.46. 5.46 times 5 minutes = 27.3 minutes. or using the paper method 5 minutes to fly 9.2 miles and 50 miles remaining also = 27 minutes to fly remaining leg. 50/9.2=5.43 times 5 minutes = 27.2

That's true. It's all to relative scale. As long as you use the same scale throughout. You would only be wrong if the answer needs to be actual distance from two points.
@darinruddock3394

I think distance remaining was 41, not 50. Because the first leg was 9nm. +/-. The 50 was the overall distance.
