As a MSc-student - who's currently on sick leave from work with stress, ironically - normally studying "full time" with 15 hours of work and some 8-10 hours of training besides that, waking up early and sticking to early bedtimes was my greatest achievement towards less stress, getting more done and being happier. When that spiraled, I spiraled.

Hey Flora! Just checking I’ve understood correctly before I reply properly - you felt best when you had the most structured routine/pattern; rather than when without?
@flora876 Жыл бұрын
@@ferguscrawley95 Yes, correct. I do realise my sentence is messy - apologies. But yes, structure and time management essentially makes me a better person; for all it does to and for me.

I'm also an MSc student that works weekends and trains throughout the week (powerlifting) and I find the workload of everything far too much, even with pretty strict bedtime/rising time. Can I ask if you've found any other ways to manage it? I'm more than a little concerned about the 9 months between now and the end of my course...
@flora876 Жыл бұрын
@@rachellarson6295 If you already now feel that you're struggling to sustain the workload and have 9 months to go, make sure that you do get breaks. Otherwise you'll end up like me. When I have a huge workload I prioritise quite cynically. Barely any social life, as little studying for class as even possible, stay home and recover (mentally) on weekends; if you already do this, evaluate what you can 'cut out'. I can usually keep going like that for 6-8 months, but 18 months without breaks as I did this time was way too much. Don't do that.

Life is awesome when you wake up early. You explained the mechanics of this well. Writing this before going to sleep ironically, up for half 5 which is my pattern for winter before reverting to 4:30-5:00 in the spring and summer months. Nothing better than a long run when the suns coming up and the roads are quiet.

Brilliant video Fergus. 100% agree with No phones in the bedroom, been doing this for 3 years and it has really helped with my sleep/wake times. No devices in the Bedroom makes the bedroom just a place for rest and recovery and helps me to think of sleep time as something i look forward to. Thanks for your hard work Fergus always enjoy your content 👍👍

Hey Fergus, enjoying your content atm. I'm starting to get into ultras and the like and starting to find balancing work, training, work and relationships (fiancée) challenging at times. You touch a bit on managing this in the video but would be awesome to see a video with some more tips/ideas on how to manage this. All the best x

Lately I've been getting up early and meditating. I find it very helpful as it puts me into a calm and alert focus. It helps me get out of bed too, since I know that as a result I'll be going through the day better able to handle everything. Meditating also allows me to take my time waking up without rushing which is a big plus.

Thanks for sharing, I have been working towards a 4.30am wake up, it seems like a mental time to be waking up to most my work colleagues but it make so much to me, I gain more focus in the morning, I feel prepared for the day and I generally and a lot happier.My down fall is the getting to sleep, some days are great i drift straight off but others are more difficult, using the whoop band is going to hopefully help as I continue to work on it!

Being a shift worker I would love a normal sleep schedule. But it’s just one area that needs to be adapted to. I find as long as I can get about 7.5hrs of sleep per sleep period, my days are usually fine. My training definitely suffers when on night shift though, but there’s very little I can do to improve that situation outside of quitting 😂

I've been getting up at 5am weekdays for a year now and I love that quiet in the morning, my question is what time at weekends, I'm torn between 6am so it's not such a jump from Sunday to monday but also part of me wants to catch up on sleep ( even tho I still get easily 7-8 hours throughout the week so not exactly missing out)

Great content, great delivery. As always. Do you have a vid on sleep advice itself? Can't see one. As you say, it's THE most important discipline for training (recovery), but not that much out there on it, i.e. Optimum duration, preparation, conditions, daily/training structure to enhance it, how to analyse it (gadgets stuff). Advice appreciated.

I have a nokia, simple phone, had for a year or so, this does help during the day and night fir self control, but i dont always use it and have smartphone binges in the night! Try and respond to emails, youtube on laptop rather than a mobile, it more control and effort on laptop and it can structure away from mobile. I feel at least focus, learn on one, only 1 thing per 2 weeks or a month. That 'll be 12 things learned per year, amazing! Rather than a scatty 50 things. Anyways, I preach but dont practice.

Great video Fergus! Question: if you know you can't get to bed at your normal time in advance (e.g. social event/late travel) do you prioritise still waking up at the same time and accepting poor sleep for a night, or still getting the right amount of sleep and shifting your day to wake up later?
@maxprice5461 Жыл бұрын
I may be wrong... but I think he has touched on this issue before. Prioritising waking up at the same time is most important whether that means you went to sleep at 8pm or 12am. Say you go to sleep at 10pm and wake up normally at 5 (7hrs sleep) then going to bed an extra hour earlier than your usual time the next day (8pm) would help catch you up ( based on someone's sleep optimum being 8 hours).

Fergus. Happy, healthy, successful and safe 2023 to You and Family. Thank You. Yes 5am every day, 365 days.... with the odd exception. Set a routine and stick to it. My 'rural' upbringing could help. However, early is the best time of the day. Alarm 5am, ensure out of bed by 5.10am Routine, a ordered start to the day. Good breakfast and V60 'pure' coffee. Face the day, list making etc. Out the door and get on with the day as required. Another key early to start the day, therefore balance the day. Bed by 10pm. No screen time or even a chapter of a book. Try that over the breakfast. Routine is key. Looking forward to an inspiring year of content from You. Thank You. Appreciated.
